This was emormous when I was a kid. You felt like you were a part of something special, watching it and being part of it. It was a bit like being treated like an adult. You look back on it now and can't quite believe it was so special, but it was
Playaway was a wonderful childrens show. I still make that joke about the pair of knickers. I must've got it from Plawaway. It was achildrens programe, but it was meant in part for adults too. The adult jokes were designed to go over the heads of kids, but without being patronizing.
I always found Toni Arthur a bit bohemian and constantly mused that she was free to wander, shoelessly, to the (then) alternative world of vegans, cannabis, copious amounts of folk music and muesli. The kind of sort that looked upon Christmas as pleasant social intercourse rather than tons of presents, television and grub. She was a bit of a bird, upon reflection. How time heals fragmented memories. Brian Cant glued it all together of course - top top man.
The very same, he can be found in tank-top, glasses and basinhead haircut in the 2cnd part of this vid (see "RELATED VIDEOS" in the right hand column")
That takes me back,Saturday afternoon,1970s, BBC2,test card all day and then countdown to this at four o clock, followed by a televisual feast over on BBC1,Basil Brush,Doctor Who,The Generation Game,The Duchesss Of Duke Street(or some other drama)The News at nine,That's Life!,Starsky and Hutch/Kojak etc.The quality of TV sets is better now but back then we had better quality shows and only on three channels.
OMG. How do you start a flee race? 1, 2 flee away! *laughs* I love that show, although I've never seen it for real and only know it through my Jeremy Irons addiction...I definitly who have watched this as a child, and even more now!

I love Toni Arthur when I was little, it was a gift that she worked with Brian Cant.
He was never, ever talked down to kids, he didn't dumb down words, he made us laugh.

This was too clever for kids, it must have been made with the parents in mind.
Brian Cant is brilliant and I loved Toni Arthurs, when I was kid too.

So much so that now I'm 42 and divorced 12 times, in all my marriages all i could hear was "play away" in my mind as some kind of subliminal messge
