  • Send all this stuff to Mars and start a civilization there! MARS TO STAY!

  • >2012, a video like this having 116k views, and Firework having millions of views.

This is why we can't have nice things.

  • So nice, any hope to developed this idea in the Amazon Region?

  • @khanimambobar

You don't seem to understand. This isnt an 'idea' to be developed. It is basically public blueprints to build your own farm equipment. If you cannot follow what is essentially a lego block plan, then you don't deserve the tools that this creates.

It is YOUR job to make this work, not theirs. They are simply giving you the ability to build your own equipment instead of relying on overpriced corporate products that are designed to milk wealth.

  • Power to the People.......these people are clever and humanitarian.....they will help save the world:))

  • Mam nadzieje, ze Marcin to przeczyta: Because he's a FCKIN GENIUS!!!!!! Thank you for your input into civilization. But beware! There will be REACTION from, not even (corporate owned) govt, but GREEDY CORPORATIONS !!!

  • Adversity breeds innovation ~ robcas631

  • This is what I imagine the world could have been if we weren't so preoccupied with what we are being told to do every day.

  • Yes, this is the way to end top down pyramidal systems of control admimistered by the corporate gangsters. Thank you for your valiant efforts and hard work. We do not need the corporate world ruling our lives and controlling the ploitica manikins! We can all be really free if we can get rid of the corporation which have enslaved humanity for profits and control!

  • Just wait until the US Government imposes all of the safety regulations on his equipment that other manufacturers are required to obey. Either that or until he is sued out of sight by someone who is hurt either building or using his designs.

  • @Eantone47 Ever heard about disclaimers?

  • planned obsolescence needs to be shelved.... Bernard London and Brooks Stevens rank pretty low on my accomplished scientist scale, whereas Marcin Jakubowski is a Tesla kind of guy.

"the lightbulb conspiracy" movie goes into this topic pretty well.

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't true, Alex Jones has specifically talked about this and I cite him and his families knowledge of farming and ranching on this topic, about how they replaced all the American made frame equipment that didn't but rarely break down with Asian versions that regularly break down at huge expense. I'm not a farmer so I'm just repeating what I've heard, Let the farmers speak on it if I am wrong.

  • GENIUS

  • Viva Open Source.

  • Oh My G-D! This video makes me jump UP in my seat with joy! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!

  • Yay! Now we can over populate the world even easier and faster!

Now, for those who are inevitably going to message me and call me stupid or say I'm insensitive, just think about it and read up on some history. Modern farming techniques allowed the global population to skyrocket. With every advancement in tech, the pop. continues to grow at a faster rate. Resources are finite, and at a certain point people will start crowding each other out and starving, only there will be no stopping it.

  • @SkeksisRule freedom controls the birth rate. all democratic countries have low birth rates. high birth rates are in backward countries ravaged by war and dictators. free the entire world (something america COULD have done after 1945) and the birth rate will drop :)

  • @SkeksisRule - You must work for Caterpillar Farm Equipment! C'mon - EVERY change creates positive and negative implications. You don't STOP doing something good because somewhere down the line something negative might happen because of it - because those problems can meet solutions in the future as well. This man is breaking a MONOPOLY that robs people of options - a monopoly of machine making that is very expensive. He is giving options for the common man. G-d bless him!

  • @SkeksisRule The growth rate has actually been decreasing

  • @oompaloompah Source please?

  • @Adam23Lee opensourceecology [dot] org/wiki/Main_Page

  • @SkeksisRule Not necesary, people with more education should control themselves. Very poor people with low education, can have up to 20 plus children, and no exageration.

Have a look how many kids has the poor of the poor.

Its a very bad technique make hunger to reduce population, doesnt work, not tosay about the ethics.

  • @SkeksisRule So what do you suggest? That we make farming more and more expensive so that more people will starve? Why don't you do your part to reduce population by killing yourself?

  • very very cool :)

  • Back this project on Kickstarter!

  • I was gonna say too, that Big Agro is gonna come gunning for him, but then, his ideas is already out there. Do we have those DVD's? Check. Do we have motivated people? Hmmm .... the part of Africathat is not in war, the majority, so .... Check. Do we have DVD reading machines? China .... Check.

  • EXCELLENT!! thank you for sharing, this is awesome! :)

  • Someone is going to make sure that young man has an 'accident'. No one is ever allowed to infringe on corporate monopoly. If it doesn't break down at the time the warranty expires then it's not making anyone any money. Sad to say but true.

  • All for it and am a true believr ... watch yer back, tho ... Inserting one's self directly into someone else's lurcrative revenue stream often has fatal consequences. Nothing new, there ,,, and not a reason to give up ... just be sure your affairs are in order ... 's all.

  • By the Emperor! An STC!

  • @allaunjsilverfox1

death is essential to the affirmation of life...

but the point was the person was saying "who will be the wiser to know how best to allocate?", but if man would stop squabbling amongst himself and listen to the efficiencies of nature/science/mathematics instead of the brittle elasticity granted only by his politics and pocket book, then perhaps resource allocation might not be such a convoluted issue.

nature/science/mathematics is meant to bypass the bias issue he had.

  • biodiverse systems are more productive than monocultures. permaculture(dot)org(dot)au/2008/09/23/biodiverse-systems-are-more-productive/ The best tool for harvesting them is your hands.

  • Amazing

  • 0:54-0:56 Indeed. PhD is pretty useless in these days.

  • Much respect for this guy

  • None negative !!!

  • Doesn't he also have the record for doing a Rubix Cube?

  • What I like about this sort of project is that it resurrects the ideals of the American pioneers. People helping each other and sharing ideas isnt communism; its the mighty force that built an amazing country.

It was the loss of the sort of ideals now promoted by Marcin Jakubowski that caused the mess society is in today; not some artificial idea of right and left political movements.

  • Absolutely inspiring to watch! Thanks for sharing.

  • This is truely inspiring.

  • well done

  • why isn't there a link to his wiki in the description?

  • Too short!

  • This is so god.

  • I see that nine people actually "disliked" this - that makes no bloody sense! How can you dislike something like this. Perhaps they were from Honda or John Deere? This is an excellent idea and I hope it spreads throughout - and those folks who say this is "dangerous" for "democracy", well, this is not a "democracy", this is a Constitutional Republic, so this would rock us and lessen our dependence on China in certain ways. Remember: Democracy = Mob Rule.

  • @Dethkook These tools should be mass produced for the people, who cares how it looks if it does the job eh?

  • Comment removed

  • Please remember, sharing knowledge eliminates incentives about inventing new idea and consequently competition is no longer meaningful. This will be very dangerous idea for democratic countries.

  • @hankh825 That has nothing to do with democracy (if anything it's favorable to democracies). It's capitalism you're thinking about, and you probably only think that because you have a 19th century concept of capitalism, which has shown itself in the past 10 years to be further from perfect than we originally believed.

  • Advance, for humanity, is the biggest incentive.

  • i wanna work for this guy

  • I hate people who comment english content with their own language, but this time i really have to:

    Polak potrafi :)

  • Does anyone associate his idea with Garden of Eden Creation Kit from Fallout 2? :0 If something would be in this suitcase, it wold be discs containing this knowlewdge ;00!

  • we need to let development and creativity run free!

intellectual property is selfish, immature and theft from mankind.

if i were to invent/discover something new i would like to be recognized for it and also rewarded (but not disproportionately - there are such simple moral values as: too much and too little! right Bill Gates?)

most patents and such end up in the ends of rich people and companies, like trade cards in a silly selfish game.

  • great, I'm really starting to get up people arround me after those kind of projects!!

  • see. this is the reason why i love zeitgeist. it just promotes automotive ingenuity.

  • this is totally exciting .. guys good luck!

  • Tip to people who post these vids, can we get links to the open source site

  • @quodin openfarmtech . org as seen on 2:01

  • The story ideas this gave me is really crazy lol

  • Amazing. :) See what happens when we come together and have creative thought. To push for a more free, humane, and helpful ideas for the world. Not for money or power, but to be empowered for a better society.

  • the man in red shirt at 2:11 is bill gates. EXPLAIN.

  • LIBERTY OR DIE!

  • Why havent I heard of this before? This guy is amazing!

  • Yes this is wonerful but not bank friendly.. its not big industry friendly and its not greed friendly. Remember this world revolves around greed. It will be squashed instantly with red tape and beurocracy if it ever takes off. You have to remember that 'they' own you and everything else on earth. The water is claimed, the land is claimed, the useful earth is claimed and you have to work to get use of some of it.

  • @dew02005

It doesn't mean that just because they think they own everything that this still can't be a possibility. Anything can happen! This kind of mentality needs to be BROKEN!!! Money and Power are all designed to imprison you. We don't HAVE to live like this!!!!!! WE need to make a change in OUR OWN lives/mindsets and strive towards unity and love! We are all in this together. The handful of assholes running this money show will come tumbling down soon enough! We have to stick together!!!!!

  • @envy13131 I agree totally. It wouldnt take much to break me lol. Im 100% for any sharing society that doesnt have centralised control. Imperialism is dying anyway and should have been dead a long time ago. We live in a world that is broken and it will only be fixed when people meet their own spirit and learn unconditional love for all things. The people I have to direct love towards the most are those who commit the most grave sin - taking anothers will or life away.

  • BRAVO!!!!!! This is truly wonderful, soon we will all be totally self sufficient and the globalists can go to hell at last where they belong.

  • Il soon be driving my opensource car.

But you know what they will do is predictable, they will say NO you can only drive our licensed cars or our licensed hardware.

Does this hardware conform to health and safety standards? No we only supply them to OUR companys.

But the good thing is these mechanisms of control are becoming obvious to even the densest among us.

  • Must love open source.

  • Like Half Life, but more organized.

Now we just need blueprints for a buggy with a machine gun on it. :)

  • Jct: Nice to see Engineeing trying to "transcend artificial scarcity" but there is also my Engineering trying "end artificial scarcity" of money by usury in the "brain of the econoic machine" because Marcin had no scarcity of anything else but money that broke such a brilliant engineer. If not for the mort-gage death-gamble 1/(s-i) instability in the "brain of the economic machine", Marcin would be giving us clean fusion, not rudimentary tractors. 1/s timebanking would have liberated to excel.

  • Jct: What a waste that Marcin Jakubowski, someone at the top of the technology totem pole, should be forced to low-level farming to survive his mort-gage death-gamble by a stupid malfunction in the "brain of the economic machine". Beautiful results by a brilliant man but getting rid of the stupid flaw in the "brain of the economic machine" that forces him back on the land might empower all of the top of the totem pole players to try to excel there and leave farming to the less inclined.

  • Jct: So why aren't groups of humans more efficient at building tractors than he is? Of course they are. So why are teams of professionals not better than one man? Of course, they should be! So what's corrupting corporate teams into being less efficient than one? It's not the economic mechine that is alfunctioning. Search "brain of the economic machine" and find out what and where is the brain, and you'll find out what's wrong and you to fix the malfunction in the economic brain. Search and find

  • Profit for all by open idea sharing can change world starvation to world abundance.

  • Bravo!

  • I wonder why this video reminded me of the movie Ironman... Hmmm :D

  • holy cow! tractor from scratch in 6 days? in terms of something like that... its hard to build ANYTHING in 6 days...

  • @indignation01 If, by 'from scratch' he means having all the raw materials, welders, cutting tools, lades, electricity, and a computer to view the schematics on.

  • Jacque Fresco Bless You!

  • Check out The Venus Project to learn more about the way of thinking described in this video!

  • This is a good idea, millions of people around the world could be productive we could get rid of the agri-destructive system and bring fresh organic food to the world.

  • Wow-wow-wow!!!

    Super!

  • This is amazing, if true. Best of luck in development!

  • makes me wonder if i still want to study physics.... since its not really appplied.

  • Awesome!

  • This will facilitate the movement towards a Resource Based Economy.

  • @TheBigKiller I think oil, gas, crops, and steel are all resources that runs almost all economies

  • If this idea can be combined with the already present technology of 3D printing this could change industrial industry in a very significant way.

The only issue is how fuel efficient and ecologically friendly these machines can be if the can be created in a garage. But just like the LINUX operating system has shown that as the inputs increase, the outputs can exceed our wildest expectations

  • "...a greater distrubution of the MEANS of PRODUCTION" hmm, tell that to the politicians in the Philippines (who happen to own most of the farmland in this country). The idea is sound, but in countries where landed people are powerful and rich, it's so sad that they will be the ones to STOP an idea like this because it would mean they would have less control (i.e. empowering the people means they have less control over elections, etc.) But I do like the idea.

  • Absolutely brilliant. People like this guy are so inspirational.

  • now we can make aperture science?

  • What he doesn't understand is that Hunger is caused by IMF conditionalities not lack of tools.

  • Revolutionary!

  • One work ( ok, maybe two! ) - #MindBlown

  • what about cars/motor cycles?

  • his website is at

    openfarmtechorg with a dot.

    please up this.

It's silly how we can't post real URLs.

  • @axelasdf : Great website, but so strange that it's all in Imperial. Metric would make considerably more sense given the overall purpose of the website.

  • @axelasdf Thanks for this, thought the site looks... sad at best

  • @axelasdf trust me it is a good thing because of spam

  • @axelasdf I like the designs and I like the idea the most.

Using the most sufficient local resource and build upon it, is a very good and intelligent, polish idea.

    Dziekuje Marcin for your contribution.

Yes, I do agree it is silly that we cannot post URLs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • openfarmtechorg with a dot

  • I have checked out Open Source Ecology. Really fantastic stuff. Well deserves to be on TED.

    Thank you.

  • "I was useless. I had no practical skill".

Dude can only prototype and build machines in his spare time from scratch and launch a movement. I guess that PhD was good for something.

  • @cipher314

he is only a contributor to a tool set that will be easily accessible to the layman backyard fabricator. a PhD will be unnecessary to start your own "civilization from scrap metal." all the tools will be self serviceable. are you implying it is a disadvantage to build machines and launch a movement without a PhD?

  • @cipher314

  • @cipher314 For someone with a PhD in fusion power, this stuff is easy lol.

  • DIY hardware, but if you want any software you'll have to buy it from the Intellectual Property owners. If hardware was constrained the way software is, this project would be illegal.

  • @9mjb hardware is contrained. im a mechanical engineer from germany and what we do is the following: we know what we want to do. then we find a way around the existing patents. it sucks big balls.

  • @9mjb : Hardware is actually much more constrained by patents and copyright than software!

  • @9mjb There's open source software that's free to use & modify but it's seemingly in the minority compared with commercial software ...

  • @9mjb he's making his own hardware designs, and distributing them ... that would be like writing your own program then distributing it,,. copyright laws are in his favor

  • Has anyone else noticed in TED videos more and more people are DIY producing gadgets, because the official ones cost too much etc?

It's disgusting and a tragedy how much our human potential is consistently being limited by PROFIT.

Sometimes I think that in a lot of ways it's just a matter of time before planned obsolescence and artificial scarcity betrays the corporate gods and we the people go DIY.

But then I think our corporate masters would just pass bullshit laws to keep us enslaved.

  • @MarkArandjus:

The huamn potential is NOT being limited by profit, but by state regulation and intervention in the economy. Profits are signals that one is allocating resources in an economy wisely(That is assuming a totally free market, which is not what we have today, when many companies secure their profits via the state). So no, there is NOTHING wrong with profits. In fact, this guy in this video himself shows how these tools are PROFITABLE by being much cheaper to produce. Profit=WIN.

  • @Akatam0t0ma It isn't as simple as *profits signal that one is allocating resources in an economy wisely*.

That is demonstrably not the case in many, many examples, least of all ones such as the profits Paris Hilton might make off of her *essence of slut* perfume. Certainly not a wise allocation of resources.

Also, this guy’s proposal is operating outside of the profit paradigm. You can try and rephrase it that way, but it isn't about that, nor is the equation profit = win a mathematical proof.

  • @Neanderthalcouzin:

If people want to buy Paris Hilton's perfume and are not forced to buy it under duress, who are YOU to say it's not a wise allocation of resources? I myself probably would have preferred them to be allocated to something else, but I certainly wouldn't use force to do that. Usually, when a person complains that resources aren't allocated properly in a market, he is preparing the ground for bringing out the guns of the state in attempt to allocate them according to his whims

  • @Akatam0t0ma I dont quite know how to out this in soundbite form: Using water, chemicals, labor, metals and other minerals, hydrocarbons, etc, to produce Hilton perfume while a billion are on the brink of starvation is not a wise allocation of resources, at all. I wont be taking that point back, ever.

Your closing comment is really just paranoid, and not true. I say this having been raised by a conservation scientist. No guns out back, no tyranny, no jackboots.

  • @Neanderthalcouzin:

Again, who decides how resources are to be wisely allocated? You? A bunch of enlightened centrally-planning state bureaucrats? You see, the thing is, when a single individual says "those resources aren't being allocated properly in the market", he thinks he knowns how to allocate them better. But the thing is, NOBODY, not a single person knows how resources should be properly allocated. The only way to properly allocate them is through the wisdom of the crowds, i.e markets.

  • @Akatam0t0ma I dont agree. I think unbridled profit motive is backwards and inefficient in regulating and maintaining a cutting edge, sustainable economic system. It has pros and cons, and I wouldnt call it wise, more a runaway train.

  • @Akatam0t0ma

"But the thing is, NOBODY, not a single person knows how resources should be properly allocated."

nature does! nature is to affirm life and math is her tool.

  • @xjustamem0ryx No, nature is to kill off the weakest elements of a species. Usually in a painful and vicious way.

  • @Akatam0t0ma It is more profitable to continue using oil than to research renewable energy, yet renewable energy is much more beneficial to everyone else... just one example, there's lots of other ones

  • @Th3Shadow0fDeath

The problem is that, in the short term, a lot of renewable energy is actually less efficient when you look at the entire supply chain of what it took to produce the systems and materials necessary for renewable energy production (solar panels take an enormous amount of energy to manufacture, for instance - as do hybrid vehicles).

The research needs to continue on bringing costs down and efficiencies up despite those costs however which is why we need public support.

  • @david0aloha

Public support is why we are still pursuing ethanol which takes more than a gallon of oil to produce a gallon of ethanol. Ethanol would have been thrown in the trash heap of history years ago without subsidies. Public subsidies is what keeps us going in the wrong direction

  • @jjrglobal

I definitely agree with you on ethanol. Public dollars sometimes get put to good causes, but often they're mismanaged or thrown at whatever "looks" the best from a PR perspective.

I suppose by public support I think of it from a different angle. Support small-scale research, support small business start-ups (I believe this can be most effectively done through providing information/a helpful hand through the actual process of starting a venture rather than straight liquid funds).

  • @Akatam0t0ma

Profit is not inherently bad - it works for most things. Going back to your post though, price signals do have their limits. Essentially, it means basing the market on a nation-wide distributed system of consumers following the "greedy algorithm" (and algorithm based upon making the local optimum choice every "step" along a process). The greedy algorithm is awesome for problems that have a single global optimum that is aligned with the continual local optimizations.

  • The problems arise when your global optimum isn't so simple to find. Imagine a big 2D surface. Now, place a single hill in the middle of it. If you start at the edge of this surface and continually take little steps to bring you as far as you can up the closest hill, you'll eventually reach the top (since there is only one peak). Make the surface more complex though and you'll get stuck and all kinds of local maximums, and suddenly the "greedy algorithm" is no longer optimal.

  • @david0aloha

(I wish I could edit my youtube comments)

Replace 1 "and" in the first post with "an", and replace 1 "and" in the second post with "at" in "stuck and all kinds of local maximums".

  • @MarkArandjus:

"But then I think our corporate masters would just pass bullshit laws"

"bullshit laws", exactly. Why do you insist on blaming the free market for the failures of STATISM, again?

  • @Akatam0t0ma Because to a large degree corporations own politicians. AND I KNOW that sounds cliché at this point, but corporations have a vested interest in legislation, lobbying, etc.

  • @MarkArandjus:

I agree with you on that point, but then, things like "legislation, lobbying" are inherently STATIST. They are NOT a free market thing. Statism sucks, free market RULES.

  • just imagine the every child in the one laptop per child program having access to this

  • This is an awseome TEDtalk well done

  • I want more! Why just 4 min.? ;/

  • yes.

  • my friends who are/were in the usa sadly describe the experience using food, malls, freeways, etc.

so, i never really wanted to go there.

but thanks to ted, i've put the first item on my usa visit wishlist - drop by marcin's farm and build something with him.

  • A greater distribution for the means of production?

where do I sign....this guy was spot on when he said "artificial scarcity".

  • This is an amazing idea

  • awesome!!

  • Awesome video.

  • u better have 1 functioning DVD player still working when civilization comes crashing down... : ) But seriously it's important to keep the knowledge of making basic hardware obtainable for anyone who needs it. I think this guy is doing something great.

  • @drorjs Thats not the point,Its not for when civilisation crashes,Its to attempt to prevent it from ever crashing by allowing people to become self-sustaining and not need to rely on massive companies to sell you shit that has "Made in china" stamped on the back and breaks after the second use.
