dennisl2008, i used to feel similarly. i used to think that mayer was just a pretty boy who used his looks and appeal to teen girls to get famous. but i was in the front row at this show and i was completely blown away. this is a great video but it has terrible sound quality compared to what it was actually like to be there. his playing and his presence were electrifying. he stole the afternoon, an afternoon filled with countless guitar gods. he was just getting warmed up when this video cut out

Had either Bonnie Raitt or Eric Johnson(both Fender Signature Guitar players) had shown up, poor little Johnny would have gone back to the woodshed in tears, put all of his guitars in a stack, burned them and gotten a job as a telemarketer selling fake gold coins and/or China-made cat scratchers. And he'd probably fail at that too.

The only thing he's got to 'sing the blues' about is his complete, utter and total failure to write, play or sing anything that resembles anything original. But he's probably a 'really nice guy' ,oops I forgot, he keeps putting his foot in his mouth when he's interviewed too. And as far as this performance? Horrible, tuneless and emotionally vacant. In my opinion

I have a hard time believing you can even play at a quarter of the level with anybody that performed on that stage including john mayer. check out the solo on his song belief that he played at crossroads a few years back and then tell me he can't play.

@dennisl2008 yep recycled blues boy is so correct. that's just why the greatest in the world play with him? clapton, bb, double trouble, buddy, beck, scofield, pino, jordan, herbie hancock, brad mehldau.. list goes on and on.. people are hesitant to acknowledge popular musicians as being the best, and i understand their hesitation, but mayer has proven he's up there. he may seem like a pretty boy acoustic pop player, but he is a musical genius and one of the greatest guitarists of the past years

@dennisl2008 If you don't feel the emotion in his music, then you have poor listening skills. The emotion you feel with music occurs as meaning is attributed to sound-waves that you perceive. You're hearing him play, but not listening. You do not understand the musical patterns he plays, so your brain does not derive any aesthetic pleasure from it. Millions of people acknowledge the feeling in his music and recognize his genius, so it is there, you just cannot feel it.
