So...before I do something useless or even damaging...I got some thicker strings and since my guitar has been buzzing like hell. Will increasing the bow remedy the situation?
Just wanted to give thanks about pointing out the other way of measuring neck relief. I just can't tell by the naked eye - but I sure can see how the string sits on the 12th with 1st and last fret down. :) Just did my first truss rod adjustment after watching, and blammo - that irritating buzz is a goner.
Hey i have a question, i recently switched from medium .46 strings to heavy bottom slinky top .56 , the nut seems to be alright but now whenever i play on the lower frets i get horrid buzz, even with my bridge action extremely high. enough to the point where its like a quarter of an inch or more above the fret board, to where i CANT play and STILL get buzz, help? :/
Thanks a lot for this video! I just got a new acoustic Epiphone DR 90 guitar that comes with an adjustable trussrod and had no idea what that meant. You explained it perfectly. I couldn't have explained something as complicated about a guitar as this without confusing the crap out of everyone. So great job. I don't think my guitar needs this adjustment right now but when it does I'll know what to do now.
Superb!! I just used this video to "freshen up" my skills-I had not done this in over 20 years! Just got done straightening out my Yamaha PAC112j-no more buzz now...nice video, and THANKS!
My guitar will make a sort of echo sound that will ring out for quite a bit after I play a note on the higher frets. Does this mean my neck is warping?
@FrozenSparky Yeah, he probably was referring to the actual rod turning to the right. To clarify: Tightening: clockwise, Loosening, counter-clockwise.
thank you VERY much for these videos. I had serious issues with my neck due to me thinking i knew what i was doing years ago. Thanks to you i did NOT need to buy a new neck and i have my guitar in much better playing condition.
hello sir, iv got a strat and have recently changed the string gauge to 10's cause it was buzzing a lot with nines, i set up intonation and lowered the action to a decent height and now trying to get the action lower but now its buzzing and fretting out a lot from the 15 fret on, should i make a adjustment to my truss rod?
@MatKiller1197 a truss rod isn't the only thing that can make your strings high. if you have a trem system you might have to adjust that to lay correct. you may have to adjust the saddles for the strings. lowering the strings at the bridge and having a level tremelo should help.
@southpawOO7 wow a lot of shit is goin on on my fuckin guitar!!.. do you know what my guitar costs 250$ dollars i will sell it on ebay 200 and i will buy an ibanez gio cause its better and after a month i will buy the gus 600 nt
If I bought a strat and haven't messed with it at all and i decide to put 11s on it, and I can't see anything wrong just by playing, am I good to go or is there something I'm missing?
@ChickenFaeces well it depends if when you bought it it was set up. action height and neck. and what kinda strings you had on before.. typically a heavier gauge string will pull on the tremelo harder and lift the tail end of it up, which will raise your action. and reverse the other way. now it's not going to hurt it or anything but if your string are high you may want to tighten the springs in the back or lower the saddles...
Hey man I just wanted to THANK YOU!!! I visited a ton of websites and watched a few vids and your the only one who actually made any real sense. You actually show an easy way to check the curvature for beginners like me. I had a nasty buzz that was happening because my neck was too flat, your way showed me how to put that right amount of bow which cured the buzzing problem. Thank you so much!
good video man. this is one of the best explanations i have seen. plus the zoom in on the 12th fret is great. on the vintage strats with the truss at the heel, you should take the neck off instead of trying to pull out the pickguard, why scratch up the guitar with pickup screws and pots when you can just pull off the strings and yank the neck real quick. its easier and less time consuming. regardless great video and this should be the only video you should watch for truss rod adjustment.
@Lekiwi33 action on the lower frets ie 1st vs action on the 15th would be lower at the first and a smidge higher at the 15th. your strings come off of the saddle at the bridge to the nut at a tapered angle. plus you need to pay attention to the radius of the neck and the string height at the bridge with the appropriate radius at the bridge. you can offset the two allen screws, set them askew, to one another to adjust string spacing and alignment according to the fret dots and line of sight
@metallica5252 it has a nut the only thing is that mine is an acoustic and where the nut is supposed to be its down inside the little hole not the sound hole.
How much is preference? Like, would i definitely know if my truss rod is out of whack? The reason i ask is because i have a 22.5 duo sonic. I dont know what strings it came with, but i slapped some 13s on there, and it plays fine. I didnt adjust anything, but if it feels fine then is anything wrong?
@ChickenFaeces no. if the guitar plays fine and doesnt buzz, then you are good. if you like the way it feels then fuck it. my neck was straight as hell, but i didnt like the way it felt. felt tooo stiff. so i put some bow to the neck and it feels better. before it didnt buzz, just didnt have that loose feel. trust the way it feels. if it starts buzzing on the 5th fret and buzzes on the 12th and so on you need to adjust. but sometimes its the action that needs the adjustment.
@omnicronvegas well, i would get the action to where i want it first....then adjust the truss rod, keeping in mind i will need to make final action adjustments once the truss rod and neck bow is where it feels best, to ultimately fine tune the action height. a lot of fender necks radius on the fretboard will possibly buzz when making big bends, ex.the high E bent up 1 whole step might bend on the radius center of the fret. rule of thumb is 1/16th on the top of the 17th fret bar for action.
@omnicronvegas also, keep in mind the higher the better for resonance and tone. for speed lower. but you can still haul ass on high action. i practice on a classical guitar w/ nylon strings, get my chops and speed up on that, then plug in and the strat is almost toooo fast. also, its real hard to get it 100% buzz free in all positions and bends, unless its refretted and filed etc. you can control the slight insiginficant buzzes with the way you depress and hold each particular note.
@xeeet99 might want to tighten the truss rod up about only 1/8th of a turn at the most. it will straighten it up just enough to get those frets away from the strings without bringing the height up. loosening the truss will make the higher frets start to buzz.
Do I have to take the strings off or detune the guitar before adjusting the trus rod? I'm waiting to do my acoustic but don't want to do it if I'm not sure, any replies greatly appreciated.
@xDet3rmin4tionx, Hey man what do they tell you?? detune or not??. I dealing the same as you, but i guess we have to detune because with the strings normally tuned, you just cant tighten or loosen; the strings, up there, in the headstock dont let you.
Of course if you have a guitar alike to the dude of the video (fender style).
My pleked custom made guitar has started buzzing around the fifth fret on the D string. I bowed the neck forward a touch to raise the string height. (Stop tail bridge has no height adjust). Still buzz. Then I noticed it was the bridge pickup buzzing at that frequency in it's shell. Pressing down on the bridge pickup dropped the buzz a lot, but not all...then I realized that particular frequency was traveling into the body making the whole guitar vibrate much more than any other frequency.
Hello, I have a Gibson SG and it has just a little bit fret buzz and I want to get rid of it but I don't want to go to my luthier for it since his store isn't close to where I live, so I want to fix it myself. One question, if the truss rod is slightly adjusted, do I need to change the string length with the saddles again? (so the 12th fret E string is exactly an E again), or is the difference so small that it's not necessary?
@GitarenEnBananen hey bud, when you do a small change like that, it could make a small difference to re intonate, if thats your question, but if your not noticing any tuning problems, then its no biggie!
i've recently bought a Blacktop Fender Jazzmaster (brand new). it came with 9 guage strings and i wanted to change it to 11 guage.
i've changed the strings and i'm trying to adjust the truss rod, but i can't get the allen key into the truss rod, i've tried many different sizes of allen keys and none will slot in.
is there a different type of hole for the blacktop JM's, or is my truss rod just fucked up?
if it's fucked, should i just get a new JM? (still have receipt)
@crazyedd123 bring it to the store and have it checked out... no one can answer your question correctly without seeing the actual instrument, and at the store they'll be able to inform you on replacing or fixing your guitar if it is a problem on that part.
pls can someone answer... I regret buying my shitty electric Harley Benton. So now I have a 1 cm gap between neck and strings when doing the 1st - 22nd fret. I know i need to adjust truss rod too... but im sooooo scared of doing it.. :( what if the neck blows away? I've heard some stuff about it.. pls some advice? also this old man at the store told me it needs 100 euro worth of repair :O.. is that possible? last resort (after asking other stores) is taking it to get repaired and paying :/
@godevil1313 i hope you mean 1mm because if its 1 cm that guitar is f***d and it might need more care than just tightening the truss. go slowly and quarter turn each time, just to see if anything is solved, but its not likely to fix it all.

My low E string buzzes a bit near the nut they said the truss rod needs to be adjusted , strings are pretty much high you know, theres like 1cm height at 15th fret...
Hey man, thanks for that short and sweet tutorial. Always wanted to know how to adjust the truss rod...Its helped turn my guitar into a easy shred machine hahaa + i also saved my self $80 bucks taking it to a guitar tech!!! Cheers mate...
@munierinho change the strings, adjust the trem springs to get the bridge level, adjust bridge action (height), adjust springs again, adjust the truss rod (if necessary), adjust intonation.
I've got a Squire strat and the truss rod is the same type as in the video, but the truss rod is sticking out of the hole a little bit. It that problematic at all, or does it matter? I did the test he showed and I think it's pretty straight.
I have a ltd M-200fm and it has a heavy buzz. The neck is very straight but when i turn counter clokwise nothing happens and it turns very easy. Guitar is brand new.
It could definitely be a different more serious problem such as fret leveling, but.......... if your palm muting and your getting a lot of buzz on the 1st 2nd and 3rd frets, loosen it until the buzz goes away. ;)
okay guys my 12th frett isnt exactly a full octave up its slightly under if i adjust it will it sort that out or is it a problem that needs to be done by a professional
@chaz9123 It is called innotation. If your slightly under that means that the string is flat. If it was over then it would be sharp & will have to be shortened from the back of the strings saddle. Tightening the saddle will shorten the string & increase sharpness of the octave on the 12th fret. Lengthening the string will give you a lower octave on the 12th fret. Sounds like your pretty close so you want to turn the screw just a little at a time
@Kilooscarromeo by the saddle is it where you feed the string through on the tremolo and i've done that but doesnt seem to make a difference its still slightly flat =/
@chaz9123 Sorry, it's called intonation not what i had spelled(innotation). Yes, the string goes through the saddle & on the back of the saddle there is 1 screw that sets the intonation. You shorten or lengthen the string to get precision intonation. From, what I've learned is that some guitars just don't have good intonation , a flaw. There can be quite a few flaws on a guitar when leaving a production facility. If you look at my channel in favs i have a video on 8 common flaws. Must see this
@chaz9123 If you can determine that you do have a flaw & you can 't set the intonation properly. You might want to take a look at the guitar you have & find out what else could be wrong. Because, the prob that your having might be caused from another flaw. Take a look at this video I have saved in favs & you will have a way better understanding on where flaws could be. Otherwise, take it to a shop, but they might tell you what I've said, there is a lot of vids on repairing guitars on YT.
@chaz9123 This guy is very good at explaining. Actually, humidity can affect a guitar more than you would think. Humidity can cause stress & twists & warps necks, can 't get proper tunning, etc..... Theres a lot more to a guitar than most think Huh?Like flawless fretting, Proper nutting Heres a big 1 HAVING A LOT OF FEEDBACK. Caused by not having proper sheilding of the wiring & electrical componets in the back of the guitar In the Wiring Box(s) common probs that you can correct easily
@Kilooscarromeo okay :) thanks for taking your time to help me just one last question because im thick if my 12th fret is flat do i move it away or towards the neck of the guitar? thanks very much
@chaz9123 Away, like your twisting a cap back on a wiskey bottle. This guy ROCKGUITARPOWER that made this vid has an excellent vid on setting intonation. Check it out. Know problem on commenting I like to help because i'm learning to. Did you have a chance on checking out the vid i mentioned on common guitar problems I think it is a must see. Really good knowledge on guitar probs & how to spot them . Excellent knowledge to know if your buying a guitar & really don't know anything about them.
Btw, don't turn the truss rod that much in a single day =) Turn it a 1/4 of a turn, and play on it for atleast a day, I've broke a truss rod by over doing it.
Here's a better way to measure neck bowing. Buy yourself a 24" steel ruler, then lie it edge down along the length of the neck between the D & G strings
The neck on my Strat bowed when I changed to heavier gauged strings.
I HAVE A WANA BE STRAT CALLED A GLEN BURTON anyway the nut is a plastic piece of crap and has worn down alot since ive had it probly from tuning it to flat then back to standard so many times, is ther a nut that doesnt wear as much that wont requir me to cut a biger hole for the nutt?????also im using .12 flat strings and will probly need to adjust some stuff right???
@ntrnate For a temp fix, you can loosen the strings and put small pieces of paper in-between the strings and nut, my cousin had to do that and it worked fine.
So...before I do something useless or even damaging...I got some thicker strings and since my guitar has been buzzing like hell. Will increasing the bow remedy the situation?

What if there's one in both ends? Should you just hold a screwdriver in the butt end of the neck (to brace) and adjust it in the top?

what if you have a 24 fret guitar? do you put your pinky on the 24th fret or the 22nd like this guitar?
ibanez87 10 months ago

GitarenEnBananen 10 months ago

(still have receipt)
crazyedd123 10 months ago
@crazyedd123 bring it to the store and have it checked out... no one can answer your question correctly without seeing the actual instrument, and at the store they'll be able to inform you on replacing or fixing your guitar if it is a problem on that part.
pieerrrree 10 months ago
@crazyedd123
I'm only guessing, but there are allen wrench sets in inches and in metric. You could be using the wrong set.

pls can someone answer... I regret buying my shitty electric Harley Benton. So now I have a 1 cm gap between neck and strings when doing the 1st - 22nd fret. I know i need to adjust truss rod too... but im sooooo scared of doing it.. :( what if the neck blows away? I've heard some stuff about it.. pls some advice? also this old man at the store told me it needs 100 euro worth of repair :O.. is that possible? last resort (after asking other stores) is taking it to get repaired and paying :/
godevil1313 11 months ago
@godevil1313 i hope you mean 1mm because if its 1 cm that guitar is f***d and it might need more care than just tightening the truss. go slowly and quarter turn each time, just to see if anything is solved, but its not likely to fix it all.

What is the proper order in which I should:
Change strings, adjust truss rod, adjust intonation, adjust string height, adjust tremolo springs.
I'm not sure which order to do these things in. 1st time a a couple of these.
Thanks.
munierinho 1 year ago
@munierinho change the strings, adjust the trem springs to get the bridge level, adjust bridge action (height), adjust springs again, adjust the truss rod (if necessary), adjust intonation.

I've got a Squire strat and the truss rod is the same type as in the video, but the truss rod is sticking out of the hole a little bit. It that problematic at all, or does it matter? I did the test he showed and I think it's pretty straight.
JonnyMonster91 1 year ago
@JonnyMonster91 no you probably have a bullet truss rod, works the same and its a little easier to adjust

yea i got some buzz up on the first and 2nd frets mostly from my low strings. do i thighten or loosen it?
masterbate23 1 year ago
@masterbate23
It could definitely be a different more serious problem such as fret leveling, but.......... if your palm muting and your getting a lot of buzz on the 1st 2nd and 3rd frets, loosen it until the buzz goes away. ;)

okay guys my 12th frett isnt exactly a full octave up its slightly under if i adjust it will it sort that out or is it a problem that needs to be done by a professional
chaz9123 1 year ago
@chaz9123 It is called innotation. If your slightly under that means that the string is flat. If it was over then it would be sharp & will have to be shortened from the back of the strings saddle. Tightening the saddle will shorten the string & increase sharpness of the octave on the 12th fret. Lengthening the string will give you a lower octave on the 12th fret. Sounds like your pretty close so you want to turn the screw just a little at a time
Kilooscarromeo 1 year ago
@Kilooscarromeo by the saddle is it where you feed the string through on the tremolo and i've done that but doesnt seem to make a difference its still slightly flat =/
chaz9123 1 year ago
@chaz9123 Sorry, it's called intonation not what i had spelled(innotation). Yes, the string goes through the saddle & on the back of the saddle there is 1 screw that sets the intonation. You shorten or lengthen the string to get precision intonation. From, what I've learned is that some guitars just don't have good intonation , a flaw. There can be quite a few flaws on a guitar when leaving a production facility. If you look at my channel in favs i have a video on 8 common flaws. Must see this
Kilooscarromeo 1 year ago
@chaz9123 If you can determine that you do have a flaw & you can 't set the intonation properly. You might want to take a look at the guitar you have & find out what else could be wrong. Because, the prob that your having might be caused from another flaw. Take a look at this video I have saved in favs & you will have a way better understanding on where flaws could be. Otherwise, take it to a shop, but they might tell you what I've said, there is a lot of vids on repairing guitars on YT.
Kilooscarromeo 1 year ago
@chaz9123 This guy is very good at explaining. Actually, humidity can affect a guitar more than you would think. Humidity can cause stress & twists & warps necks, can 't get proper tunning, etc..... Theres a lot more to a guitar than most think Huh?Like flawless fretting, Proper nutting Heres a big 1 HAVING A LOT OF FEEDBACK. Caused by not having proper sheilding of the wiring & electrical componets in the back of the guitar In the Wiring Box(s) common probs that you can correct easily
Kilooscarromeo 1 year ago
@Kilooscarromeo okay :) thanks for taking your time to help me just one last question because im thick if my 12th fret is flat do i move it away or towards the neck of the guitar? thanks very much
chaz9123 1 year ago

I HAVE A WANA BE STRAT CALLED A GLEN BURTON anyway the nut is a plastic piece of crap and has worn down alot since ive had it probly from tuning it to flat then back to standard so many times, is ther a nut that doesnt wear as much that wont requir me to cut a biger hole for the nutt?????also im using .12 flat strings and will probly need to adjust some stuff right???
ntrnate 1 year ago
@ntrnate For a temp fix, you can loosen the strings and put small pieces of paper in-between the strings and nut, my cousin had to do that and it worked fine.
