  • Watch this go into production for the military...

  • Thats one hell of a fan. Especially to be pointing at yourself!

  • he speak only for theory

  • NANO IDIOT

  • @ilias234 bitch

  • MADE IN CHINA

  • Chances are that when we have the technology to make a light saber that it will be military only. With that kind of weapon, so many crimes can be easily done.

  • stupid ads. cnt even wtch 4 20 min. and i run on a 1 yr old 21in. mac.

  • awww man that would cost a lot. and it would be illegal

  • kaku for president

  • ugh I hate these advertisements!!

  • now all we need to do is get rid of the ceramics and learn to use the force

  • @lorddragn1 how do we know that the ones from the movie wernt built with the ceramic? ud never be able to see it anyway.

  • If he builds it...I will cum.

  • We must bulid it, besides it would end wars pretty fast. But more inportent us fans want one dammit!

  • well the thig is nano technoligy could work but the most common thing to do is use a raw radiation battery such as plutonium or uranium. even in a little battery that could fit inside a lightsaber the power it would give off would last for years and produce the heat you need. the only thing is you need somthing to block the radiaion but we have invented things to block radiation. just put it inside the light saber and it could work

  • How does the laser thing end at a certain point? And how does it stay cylidrical??

  • @HolyGlucose a electromagnetic coil and telescoping ceramic rod working together helps it keep its shape.

  • haha @ SlimySnail44 .... hell yeah bro, a real war 'say in iraq' with lightsabres would make awesome TV nobody would mind funding going into the war budget if we got live action starwars.

  • The power cell just defies belife, it just opens a door to human utopia.

  • @Tantrumzero you're right but isn't all of that utopia? i mean wtf with the small jet engine?

  • @94vujke I work at a foundry that produces ferrosilisium, the prosess requires extreme ammounts of power. For melting down karts and iron, the furnace needs 50 megawats to operate.

If it just could just run of a cell that would fit in your hand, the storage capacity would change humankind.

  • Thank you youtube for the global warming propaganda I had to watch before this video...

  • Can you imagine like the war on terrorism in the middle east being fought with these? I think that getting a weapon like this would be awesome, but could be devastating in a war, and shouldn't be put in production D:

  • Holy shit.. I think I love science now.

  • So it is a plasma-baton? plasma-club? On the other hand "lighsaber" does not make sense, since sabers are bent, c-shaped, not straight.

Anyway, holding Sun-hot plasma inches from your hand would set you on fire in seconds, unless you also wear ceramic gloves and suit.

  • No demonstration?

  • What concerns me is how are you going to contain the plasma without using superconducting magnets which require near zero degrees kelvin to function?

  • That is so cool. But made of ceramics? Aren't ceramics, you know, fragile? How are you supposed to win a lightsaber duel if you sword keeps breaking? Or are there ceramics hard enough to stand that?

  • The spyder 3 is not a lightsaber. Its a laser gun phaser

  • this scientist is, in my opinion, the best scientist of the modern age. he uses more imagination than mere intellect, and look at him now, inventing the impossible.

  • too bad i'm going to be uh... 65 when these things come out. CRAP

  • I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please put that into production :D

  • @MrSamTheFlowerMan build it yourself, it would take ages to save up but.....

  • holy fucking sh-

I MUST absolutely make sure I live to see one of these.

  • and by "see" I mean cut stuff with it

  • yeah... but what kind of plasma? of what element is he talking about bringing to plasma?

  • I really look up to people that are as genius as this guy but still have the same phantasy and creativity as a child. This is the kind of science that will bring us forward !

  • The real question is, can it block laser bullets? because it loses its purpose if not. every jedi is shown blocking the red lasers at some point, but what of it without blocking? boom youre dead, or they hit a vulnerable part and it goes boom!

  • @MrBaldeagleman Not only that, but also, think of the prices. if there are people who still want to stay in this age, and not pay for this design, then we get shot. A gun would still take care of this, very simply. It's as simple as this: If you bring a knife to a gun-fight, you are going to loose. If they don't get close enough to use it, what use is it???

  • @Chomper135 Your comment is hilarious. If you REALLY think people will buy this to replace guns, you're a moron. If you are being sarcastic, then I agree.

  • @2000jago I don't believe that people will buy this to replace guns... that's kinda the point of my post... I was pointing out how obsolete that this would be. We made guns, and haven't gone back to swords, why would we need a "fancy" sword...

  • @Chomper135 I think so, in the future we will use plasma bullets(I hope we don't need weapons buts that's an utopia).

But in the movie they can even stop bullets with his mental power using a light sabre, anyway that will be useful to.

  • @Chomper135 I call that stating the ultimate obvious.

You're missing the point. The point is that guns will rule until something better is invented, but just because nothing better has been invented yet, does not mean that if lightsabers suddenly become possible tomorrow that people won't want to own one.

Think about it: Knives still sell and many people carry them for self defense. Should they not bother because their opponent MIGHT have a gun which trumps them? Silly reasoning...

  • I love michio kaku, freakin genius

  • As long as where talking about stuff that doesnt exsist, then lets just say that the light saber is held together with its own natural moleculer structure, heating of some molecules and gravity to form them into a beam doesnt seem to impossible. I mean the idea is based off a hilt that has the power to do this. Not a freaking metal rod thats super heated. It would just take a lot of time and studying to find this information.

  • hey, and what happens when one sable hit the other? pls, someone

  • @metalprinc it goes BOOM!#@

  • are they actually making a lghtsaber?? you could cut ood... and things like that? it will be like in star wars?? or this all is just joke? how it will cost? and what time it will work??? you cant have turned it on everytime* somebody answers all this

  • @metalprinc its not really plans for a lightsaber as more of a design to show it COULD be possible to construct in the future

  • @metalprinc How could anybody answer this? I can barely understand anything you wrote.

  • @metalprinc They're not building a lightsaber, this guy just thought of the way it could be done, however the technologies e used in his design are either in early stages of development or even just being theoretically considered. But yes, if the built it, it would be able to cut (or more precisely burn) through stuff, though metals, minerals and materials like that would be very problematic. For reasons I've stated the cost is not yet known. The time this would work for per charge…

  • @hellterminator …will hugely depend on the technologies that don't exist yet so it's pretty impossible to tell. I guess that in the early stages it will work only for a short time period and as the technology will advance, the operation time will extend. When one saber hits another one it will be like smashing two wooden sticks against each other – the only damage that can be done to them would be caused by force of the impact but not the plasma (though there could be some local overheating).

  • This show is extremely corny.

  • @supermariogalaxian yaaa but Dr.kaku is still the one of the greatest physicists of all time

  • Ceramics, would Fail.

  • so wtf, they gonna get off their asses and make this? even the thought of one EXISTING would blow me away.

  • Dude... you know phones were invented more than a hundred years ago right? hahahaha... ignorance.

  • i want a green one

  • @yinyanglovebomb green plasma???

  • civilized=cruel?

  • @shuwukong ?

  • i am 23 years old and still hoping one day santa will bring me light sabre for christmas...

  • @johnydeltablues santa isnt real m8 :)

  • @clovelywindheaven no way...

  • @johnydeltablues I'm 49 and so am I....

  • @johnydeltablues wow, 22 years old and also hoping the same thing... I've never felt so old =S

  • ceramic would be way to delicate to bang into anything maybe for a slow motion fight. FAIL

  • @stoopefy Ceramics can be made as strong as any metal. Ceramic isn't only for coffee mugs.

  • @jakeurbooty good argument, great example...

  • @Badassproductionsftw ya i no but its never gonna be a true lightsaber because you dont stop a laser but if someone got one of thoes i could see someone being all like"IMMA FIRIN MAH LAZOR!*turns on the 'lightsaber'*BLAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!*some guy catchs on fire*" but that would be horrible so dont judge me on that statment but if u saw it on youtube you would more than likely be laughing cuz most of that stuff would be fake

  • i would be darth maul

  • i have a friend who researched lasers for an Independent Research Project for school, and he said the technology would be around in about 50 years... now this guy, who REALLY knows science is saying the same thing. i'm gonna be a sixty something year old man with a lightsaber... if a civilian could even get one

this would change warfare in ways i can't fathom..

  • @Cheezeball99999 u would become obi-wan=))

  • @5000gokussj well, at that age they call him 'old Ben Kenobi' but still..

  • @Badassproductionsftw thats not a lightsaber. its a laser beam. it can easily kill/ cause eye damage but if this kind of lightsaber becomes reality, it would change the world forever

  • starwars = Laser sword

This Video = Hot Iron Rod

  • @shadowfaithx Did you even watch the video? It's not a "hot iron rod" it's plasma held in place by electromagnets. It's as close as we can get, a laser sword can't be "about this long" Lasers are beams of light. Light doesn't just stop after a couple of feet because we want it to, a laser sword would be as long as... however far that beam of light can go.

  • @bill01234 there is some sort of way to stop it but the laser sword would be very innefective. plasma swords would actually be lightsabers. it would do the same thing lightsabers did*cut through solid steel by melting it, 1 hit murder, etc...*

  • @bill01234 @bill01234 dude , in the past 50 years people says u can't talk in a distance unless u shout loud enough

    and now there's a phone ...

people say u can't breath in water , but now there's a compressed oxygen tank for diving ...

so wtf is not possible ?? they'll be able to stop light and form anything they want

  • @ashleylovesdaddy - I know that when most people think of ceramics they think of fragile things like a dish or coffee cup, but there are military grade ceramics that are almost as hard as steel. They are used for body armor, tank plating, knives.. etc So they should be strong enough to handle the physical contact, and, by nature, heat resistant enough to be subjected to the superheated plasma without melting.

  • My lightsaber design shoots out a stream of charged anti-matter particles which annihilates with the atmosphere. This generates an extremely hot plasma with a maximum length based on how long it takes for all the particles to collide.

  • @Seyeklopz your designs sucks son

  • is it kind of useless

  • i think tazer like sword is more realistic?

  • If 2 of these were to collide in a fight, wouldn't they just shatter or break? Or explode?

  • HEY! HE STOLEN MY IDEA!!! :)

  • i love u science guy lol u helped me win an argument

  • so no video what so ever with it in action what a joke

  • wtf are nanobatteries? can someone explain this?

  • @JusticeRetroHunter very very small batteries.

  • Why the hell would we want a lightsaber when we have bloody guns and C4?

  • @gobebluth becuse its an elegant weapon not like a clumbsy blaster it was used in a time much more sivalized

I DONT FUCKIN KNOW ITS A LIGHTSABER!!!

  • @hardwirecars

you also dont know how to spell "civilized"

  • @markerscope1 i can spell fuck you is that enuff you damn grammar nazi

  • @hardwirecars

    haha cute

  • @markerscope1 i try :)

  • @gobebluth Well a lightsaber would definitely change the melee combat forever. Imagine if you were in a war, and you run out of bullets. Would you pull out a knife, or would you pull out a Lightsaber that is the size of a knife but can extend to a sword length of plasma with one button? Also, this thing can melt through walls and such, and it would replace the use of swords, knives, etc. in combat. There may even be a squad trained to use the lightsaber in combat as to using a gun.

  • @theufohunter123 No there is abseloutly no proof of such a thing having been demonstrated. We know that the brain emits a certain type of wave. and we can then use that knowledge to create things that responds to those waves. And that is the extent of knowledge regarding such an abiliity. Please don't spread such things around, you might find people with little knowledge, and you might delude them. Now if you DO have proof. then please make a report on it, You will be nominated for a nobelprize

  • Not to mention the fact that Kaku thinks the plume from last week was an airliner. Dumbshit. I love it how people can clearly see a tail fire at the top of the plume and still say airliner. Can people get any dumber?

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn

Yeah because the orange glow of the setting sun reflecting off of an aluminum airframe would totally be purple.

  • @theufohunter123 Thats the ideal way in my opinion, no mechnical stuff just a hilt with circuits and crystals bottomed out with a complex powercell. not some piece of shit contraption with a telescopic ceramic shaft.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic video game is out now enjoy it,

  • @apostolisxa That game doesnt even have an actual release date yet!

  • @Zeta9966 Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

    check out gamespot.com releases.

  • @apostolisxa I hate to bum you out, but that is not the same as The Old Republic. I am well aware The Force Unleashed 2 is out. Star Wars: The Old Republic doesn't have an official date other than like Q2 2011.

  • @Zeta9966 whatever.what is your opinion on the light saber?

  • @apostolisxa It goes "hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" and cuts shit in half, and makes pretty lights. Totally my kind of thing.

  • the sound of a light saber slashing in star wars is the next best thing.

  • theyre still making star wars episode 4 toys 30+ years after the movie came out...thats amazing

  • or faster if science and technology wasn't STRANGLED TO DEATH by money and profit

it is always the need of scarcity of technology that keeps the train of the economy going

  • Another 50 years? Damn i guess i gotta buy eternal life first then.

  • screw this. if there's a war, I'd rather have an old pistol in my hand than this thing.

  • If all we need is a nano battery... Why don't we start off with a prototype that is attached to a backpack with batteries?

  • @BlueX273 you would need a backpack the size of small city, we simply don't have the ability to make so much energy from with so little space, yet

  • @XxaxX360 Ok... Plan B, a prototype connected to said power source the size of a small city. Cause really, if all were waiting for is an uber nano battery, why not make a wired model? I'm curious to see if this concept actually works in practice...

  • WTF HUGE HOT IRON

  • Comment removed

  • The Asian Jimmy Page!

  • isnt ceramics brittle and easily broken?

  • @Redline748 agree

  • @Redline748 no, have you seen ceramic knifes

  • @miesrah12 yeah short and made for slicing, not long and designed for impact

  • @Redline748 just make a magnetic tube made from the same stuff

  • @miesrah12 malls sell toys lightsabers for as cheap as 50$.

i want to see a light saber up close real not watch some dumb groupie upload toys.

a light saber is real if when it is turned off uses only the hilt of the saber and when turned on it cuts through everything ans its only 1.5 meters long.and when u slash it with a similar saber it produces energy and doesnt cut .

kaku admits that it hasnt been discovered yet or not released oficialy to the army.

  • 50 YEARS???????

That suuuuuuuuucks, ill be to old to fully enjoy it.

Im so fucking pissed right now.

  • @jwhoff619 lol maybe it's a good thing that you don't because imagine the power that it would give you, to be able to cut through almost anything... scary to think someone with anger issues such as yourself would wield such power.

  • 0:01 to skip adds

  • @olimpic2008gordon

    NOT WORKING!!!!

  • @SuperEnderWiggin do it immediately when your page stop loading

  • Fuck star wars. Star wars sucks balls. In the novels, there's the real science fiction.

  • Problem - where the heck are we going to charge the thing, assuming it needed a battery that stores enough energy to power a small city for years? And how do you stop your shirt or you finger from being sucked into a hundred cubic meter per minute strong vortex at the end of the blade? How do you prevent yourself from getting burnt just from being near the blade?

Still have lots of problems, but otherwise, the idea is AWESOME!! Go Dr Kaku!!!

  • I love this guy.

  • 0:01

  • 0.01

  • lameee i wanted to see it cut some shit up, come on man

  • @CBeerzy Sadly as pointed out that won't happen any time soon. Unless you hook it up to a nuclear power plant there wont be enough energy to support this design. But the weapon will be able to cut almost anything. And certainly anything we have on our planet. If you want more of Michio kaku you can visit his personal site. Or go to Gametrailers and watch "science of games" were he poses diffrent hypothisis regarding game characters abillities.

  • Kaku's blueprint sucks. An actual lightsaber would be just like in Star Wars, a power cell that uses energy focused through crystals coming out of an emitter not som piece of shit pseudo science air sucking crap with a metal telescopic shaft.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn Now your just being silly. he has met the requirements regarding the effects when the weapon collides with another AND it is possible to cut almost anything with it. That is pretty darn impressive. And sorry but the best thing we can do, is a nano version of batteries today. And that isnt even a reality yet. i think your asking to much.

  • @Dimajo We are capable of so much more but are too lazy to even try anything anymore. Tell ya what you can have the archaic telecoping ceramic shaft version while I keep hope alive for an accurate saber. Either way I don't give a damn, fantasyland is better than reality half the time.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn You might be more interested in hearing that his team is working on inventing "the force" with will be a reality in a not too distant future. It has already worked with minor things, such as having a totally handicapped person move his arm, his wheelchair etc

  • @Dimajo First of all "The Force" as you put it wasn't an invention it was a naturally occuring energy field in the Star Wars universe but lightsabers can be built if we have the right technology and don't settle for crap designs like this. Kaku's design is very archaic.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn The force that they are working on is moving ovbjects and others and controlling other living beings only by using the brain. If you want it to occur naturally, then ofcourse that isn't possible. Our species aren't created to be able to do so. So you can't really ask that. And i don´t know enough about the fantasy version of the lightsaber. But if it needs some sort of crystal that does not excist today. Then.. we still cant meet your demands : /

  • @Dimajo Actually lightsaber's in SW are powered by powerpacks in the base of the hilt which are rechargeable, the crystals only control the blade color.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn I agree regarding the fantasy part big time. But i find it exciting when such things can become raelity therefore i enjoy Michio kaku and his diffrent inventions. Such as invisibillity, the force, a lightsaber etc.

But the best YOU can do is probably.. watch the movies again haha? since what you ask wont become reality : )

  • @Dimajo Some person back in the 60's said exactly what you said about technology not ever existing and so on yet here we are in 2010 with fucking lasers and cell phones that blow starfleet communicators out of the water. My R2D2 Droid 2 is superior to Kirk's communicator is every way. There most likely will be energy weapon technology down the road.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn haha you are completely misunderstanding me. I know that invisibillity will be avaible soon. The exploration of other galaxies in 100-200 years. etc. I know that we constantly change. Such as Ensteins theory of special Relativity. Suddenly we had relative time and space, and people before never belived it they stuck to newtons basic laws of science. So we have to accept that things can appear that can completely alter our understanding of things

  • @Dimajo Screw invisibility, the cloaking technology the Romulans and Klingons use is far off plus we don't really need at this point in time. It's bending light and so on which involved messing with a magnetic fields. Kaku displayed a copper coil looking thing that he claimed was an invisibility generator and yet we didn't get to see it in action. I'm curious why we didn't get to see it in action,b because it's bullshit. Put up or shut up I say.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn well it will be around in not too long. a couple of years. The concept of how the invisibillity works is pretty simple to be honest. And what do we need it for? well invisible police force? sadly.. it will probably be used to hide tanks, airplanes and soliders.. used for pointless murder..

I hope atlest they will give it to the police force aswell.

I dunno what a "power pack" is, but i could imagine it being very much like a couple million/billion nano batteries.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn NOW what i TRIED to say was that if you are wishing for specific components and you don't want us to invent them. Then you won't be in luck. The probabillity of that is extremely low. And close to nothing in your life time.

Nano batteries will be recharge able ? or is there some information i am missing. If i am please correct me.

  • @Dimajo It's a power pack not a nano battery pack. It's possible that in star wars the powerpacks are a bunch of tiny batteries but yeah the power pack is rechargeable.

  • LOL 100 cubic feet of air per second. You might as well make that thing store the gas and you got urself a vacuum grenade. imagine u get someone's face in front of that hilt?

  • HAHAHAHA weapons + civilized = makes no sense at all. We should start becoming civilized before thinking about becoming more civilized. 90% of all humans are stupid and thats fact. Why do you think companies rely on commercials? Because people actually believe what they are told in commercials. Stuff like cellphpne xray scanner, horoscopes, hypnosis and magic and bullshit like that is proof that most of us are idiots.

  • @JazzB1987 civilized or not there will always be war, so we might as well have ridiculously expensive and complex weapons.

  • @JazzB1987 I agree that most people tend towards the idiotic, but your logic is flawed. Products being advertised are not indicative of the intelligence level of consumers. If there's a creepy guy in a van offering free massages, does that mean the people passing by are automatically stupid, because he's trying to get their money?

  • where's the crystal?!?!?!?!?

  • An interesting design. But a fan sucking in 100 cubic feet of air per second? Wouldn't that make that end of the plasma saber quite dangerous as well?

  • @Irolan not if you put an end cap on it. the end cap would have to have holes in it though.

  • @thepurplecrystalz However, there still would be a tremendous amount of suction through the holes. If you accidentally touched that, it would rip your flesh right through the holes.

  • I want to see the real thing.

  • why its take so longgggggg to upload??? fuckkkkkk

  • @TheNickspower yea i get that too :s so annoying

  • I like how he said Ben Kenobi making clear that he isn't referring to those OTHER Star Wars movies

  • I hate everyone here and wish death upon all you bitchez.

  • Its sad to see a brilliant mind like Kaku selling out for such crap.

  • @pnserious I found it cool, it would end up introducing more people into science, Say if there wa s astarwars nerd who watched this vid...Then watched others....And then wanted to get the education to become a scientist, and became a leading science engineer, all because Kaku made a video about making a lightsabre

  • designing something and saying it will work is completely different from making a working prototype

  • what if the little fan suck my t-shirt?

  • nice idea but first build one and then talk !

  • stupid commercial before the vid. totally sux donkey.

  • This is a brilliant idea.. but there are a couple of flaws that make this impossible.

The inverse reactive current wouldn't be stable enough to support the ceramics even if you use unilateral phase detractors. hydrostatic marsal-veins would be the way to go, but it would cost over 2 trillion to produce.

  • but......where does the colored crystal go?

  • Why spending so much money in making that when you can use katanas made with steel! It is like when Americans spent millions of dollars to design a pen able to write in space, while Russian used pencils!

  • @SkaramandraX that made me laugh so hard xD
