fantastic - the double stops in the slow section before the coda are amazingly well focused and the runs really shimmer. most people (with lesser technical abilities) just kind of skim over them. I wonder if she's still concertizing or playing this concerto. i hope so.
Many players just focus on technical aspects but neglect the musical interpretation. Kyung Wha Chung is one of the rare exceptions. She leaves a lasting impression in whatever music she plays. She makes the most memorable music on her violin, in my opinion.
Why is it her beautiful, exquisite, unique tone is seemingly fully of contradictions? People mention that it is small and lean yet say she is bowing too hard against the strings.
Thank you for posting this! I think Chung OWNS the Walton--nobody else has come close in intensity, excitement, emotional range. A total shame it's out of print.
About 10 years ago, Decca published 'Kyung Wha Chung Edition' which included all her records on the lable in the new format and compliation, except for her two most popular records ('Con Amore', collection of short pieces, and Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn concertos). Her Walton record in 1972, which was originally coupled with Stravinsky and won Edison award that year, is now coupled with Beethoven concerto. I believe one can still get it in bigger shops or amazon.
@peterlunow I have it on a CD-R, a magnetic disc taken from a re-mastered CD and sold on amazon by arkivmusic for $20. They don't tell you it's not a regular CD until you order, a policy I don't like. The CD-R may not last forever but better than nothing and the fidelity is fine.
@bbbartolo better info: you can go to ArkivMusic directly rather than amazon and save $3. or buy one of the used CDs advertised (I've never had trouble with a used CD from amazon) and get a regular CD rather than a CD-R clone.
Fantastic as always - Kyung-Wha always does really well with the contemporary stuff (her Stravinsky concerto is also superlative.)
Of all Asian musicians I have heard, she is the most passionate. The Walton is fricking hard, that is for sure - one of like 7 or 8 concertos that were catered to Heifetz's specs. The Rozsa is exactly the same way. Anyhow, this is a great performance.
alot of people like the elgar but it bores me, i dont like the britton either, i find the walton much more interesting - if im not mistaken heifetz was involved some way with the music written here
If I'm right, when Ms Chung met Sir Walton, she asked why he wrote the 3rd movement so difficult, and Walton replied 'because of that damn Heifetz'... :)

this piece is so freaken hard to play. walton designed it to fit heifetz's needs precisely.

Heifetz played this?

this piece was not only played by heifetz it was written for him by walton. and heifetz premiered it.

The best way to enjoy the Walton concerto is to play the Decca issue LP record on a decent turntable. It's a spine tingling experience.
