What about if my hedgehog gets "poop boots" every day"? :D I mean a i try bathing her every 2-3 days but she seems to always like to poop on her wheel and accumulate poop on her back feet.

i used to bathe my hedgie pricklepants in a sink like that. i've had to switch to the kitchen sink because it has straight up and down sides, not the curved ones. pricklepants has figured out how to crawl out of the sink, and it becomes an issue. i've also gotten lucky with him because he really doesn't annoint that often, my problem is he seems to find the dustiest places to run around in, and he gets dust bunnies stuck all over him right after i've given him a bath.
I totally agree that wild animals should be left in the wild. African Pygmy Hedgehogs are not "wild" animals. They were cross-bred specifically for domestication. There is no such thing as an "African Pygmy" Hedgehog naturally, and they can NOT survive in the wild. Now, this begs the question of whether or not these animals should be bred for domestication - and I have many thoughts on that!
@debadoo You and me both on that question of whether or not they should be bred for the purpose of domestication but the thing that concerns me is the fact that doing that... has a high risky rate of dropping their life span
its like having a hamster with a life span of 3 years supposedly but that isn't a promised number..
@mariopwns123 You are one of the lucky ones mine died 1 month after its 3yr life period and i was 25 at the time lol.. i've had hamsters from 17 till now
Sucks those cute little critters only live for such a short time.
Was yours a short haired or a long haired by the way?
@81kamill short haired but i think the cause of death is due to it biting through the tubes and escaping (he was nice and liked me but was a troublemaker) we fond him in our pantry with a potato that was half eaten he died a few days later
my hedgehog is kinda wierd in water. She sits in the water and drinks it, then she goes on her back and stares at the cieling, then flips back over and trys to climb out. its really cute.
I'm thinking of getting a hedgehog they are so cute and look like lots of fun! I don't know much about them, though and i hope that i am up for the responsibility
Thank you! Hedgehogs are super cute, but so are ferrets and they are so much fun. I love your video of Syd & Shakespeare - they are so funny! I bet they get into a lot of trouble! hehehe
Hedgehogs do not get fleas, but they can get mites. Mites are relatively easy to cure, but it requires a vet visit and some meds. My Razzle never had mites, but it is somewhat of a common issue. Let me know if you have any questions about hedgehogs if you are really thinking of getting one.
My mom is starting a buisness where we run birthday parties for little kids with animals!!So far we have a couple guinea pigs and 2 bunnies, but we are soon geting a chincilla,a skinny pig and a Hegie!!So if you could like tell us about them it would be great!:)
It depends on how dirty they get! Usually the dirtiest part of a hedgehog are his toes (from stepping in poo!) In that case, really just a little "foot bath" is all that is needed. Too many baths can dry out a hedgie's skin so they should only be given on an as-needed basis.
If you only give baths when needed, it should be ok. Depending on where you live, hedgies can get dry skin in the winter like people do (from indoor heating). One thing I found very helpful was adding a couple drops of flaxseed oil to Razzle's food. Literally- 2 DROPS only - three to four times a week. Plus, Razzle loved the flavor of it! Just make sure the flax seed oil is fresh and refrigerated and check the dates because it does expire.
Actually Hedgehogs (African Pygmy Hedgehogs, like Razzle) are legal in New England. Razzle was from New Hampshire originally and lived in Massachusetts for a bit. He also traveled on vacation to Vermont!
@mikelinbasher Because some states don't allow "wild animals" to be kept as pets and example of one those would be a possom or a hedgehog. Which it makes no sense to me but it has something to do with so they don't spread
And yes, I love the look hedgies first give you when they are in their footbaths--their eyes implore you to make it quick!!! They love the snuggle time in the towels, though, so that is at least a small reward for the foot baths.
I love this! I have written before in your "tribute" post so you may remember me. My hedgie Spikey does the same "running" during his morning footbaths and it is so cute! I now have a second hedgie who is one years old; he was returned to the breeder due to a military deployment. I am now the forever home. He is also an algerian chocolate and he is related to Spikey (same dad). I hope you are well. I love your hedgie posts! Have a great holiday.
That's wonderful that Spikey has a brother! :) You really need to make some little videos of your quilly babies. Thanks for your messages-it's so nice to hear from you. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Its sad how these poor creatures can easily be killed in the wild especially when they are crossing roads and incoming Cars can easily stomp them easily
not yet im getting 1 tho but i know a LOT about en i do reports on them and iv been looking up how to care for em and what they need and stuff for about 3 weeks
hey you didnt mention it to me but you mention to feel free to ask questions, well im thinking about getting one what the best size and type if habitat to get them, what are sone good toys and a possable price range, thanks
ummmmmmm how duse takeing a bath DRY out there skin iv seen tons of people bathe them in like a cupple inchts of water so they can Swim but ya for batheing....and what kinda of soap shude you use like you know body wash and what kinda or soap and what kinda
but ya its kinda ummmm ya and what do YOU feed em i here can feed cat food and ummm hedgehog food and some vegis and stuff but ya ummmmm..... realy how dus takeing a bath dry its skin lol and ummmmm ya
Bathing is "drying" because it strips the skin of it's natural oils (just like with people). Especially in the winter when you have the heat on too - it can be very drying to a poor hedgie's skin. So bathing should be done on an as needed basis. I always used Aveeno Baby Wash Unscented - just a very little bit. You never want to use anything with a lot of perfumes in it due to hedgie's sensitive skin and nose!! Do you have a hedgehog?? If so, please let me know and I can help!
Oh my goodness - how sad! Was it a European hedgie that was being attacked (not an african pygmy)? And what was the hedgie being attacked by? That was so good of you to take it home and try to help. I'm sorry that the little guy didn't make it. :(
Yes, in fact, they are becoming quite the "hot" new pet in the UK unfortunately. As a result, many people want them but do not do the research it takes to properly take care of them. African Pigmy Hedgehogs are much different than the ones you see in your garden. Please research first and of course, ask me any questions!
quebic mmmmmmm very tricky don't think they sell hedgehogs there. I live in Vegas and theres tons of breeders and u can order online or something. I got my little one from a breeder. And he was cheap like 70 dollars
Literally thousands. However, Razzle had many hospital stays, surgery, medications, extensive tests for his heart (EKG, xrays, ultrasounds) so the thousands spent may not happen to everyone...but you should be prepared. As far as accessories, you don't need to spend a lot of money - if you are crafty, you can make a lot of things. The areas never to skimp on: 1) Food. Always get the best quality. 2) Health care. 3) Housing. A hedgehog needs as much room as you can possibly give.
You can get a hedgie from a breeder, or even a pet store. But I would highly recommend that you look into rescuing one! Please email me if you need any help finding a rescue. Hedgehogs can cost anywhere from $60-$150. Then, be prepared to spend a lot more on housing, food, accessories and vet bills!
Yes, dear, as soon as I get him/her/them (I still dont know if I get one or two) I will send the videos :) I am getting them on 29th March. my happiest day :)
Thanks dear for the encouragement, i really appreciate it!
They should not stay in the water very long at all. Just enough time to get the poo off the toes! (Hedgehogs like to run on their wheel and very rarely stop to do their business...hence they run in their own mess, so their feet can get pretty dirty.) Baths should only be given on an "as needed" basis. Too much will dry their skin!

Reason why is cause wild animals need to be left in the wild if they keep in constant contact with people then they aren't wild anymore.
It's common sense anyone who doesn't know that should learn how to fucking read.... quit being so lazy whatever

You can in some countries. In the US, most states do allow them, but there are some that do not (like California, for example).
