  • if i'm not mistaken, superboy wanted to distance himself from Superman's look

  • I'd like to see what Tim Gunn could do with some of the costume creators in some of the superhero MMOs that are out. When City of Heroes came out, when I first started up the game, I spent a good 2 hours playing around with the costume creator. After that I really got into designing the costumes for my characters and my main character was always getting compliments for his costume. I always tried to keep them clean and simple and it worked, within the limitations of the creator.

  • Besides the bracelet masqeurading as a belt on the modern costume design, I love it. No panties on the outside, and black instead of yellow for the symbol both work for me.

  • Your analogy of the good cop/bad cop dynamic between Batman & his Robins was perfect.

  • can anyone tell me what comic the superman at 1:38 is from? the red and white one.

  • These 2 guys together talking about super heroes is GOLDEN!

  • That was a fun series. I'd love to see you and Tim do more....there are a LOT of great and horrible super-hero costumes out there. I think you guys would have a field day with some of the Golden Age characters !!

  • This is great. Love how in depth you guys get. Thanks for putting this up.

  • I wouldn't mind seeing your take on the villians costumes, but first I need to remember if they have had as drastic amount of changes as some of the heros shown here.

And secondly I wonder what your take on the upcoming dc costume change with the reboot. Do you plan to make any more of these videos?

  • Nice Short Video

  • This was a truely great 2-part discussion. I could easily listen to an hour of it, and i'm usually forcefully indifferent to (popular/modern) fashion. Please make another one!

  • No Team Titans? :(

  • The one time I flicked onto PR, Tim Gunn was what kept me watching. A very smart man. I'd love to see him do this again, I wouldn't mind hearing his views on some characters outside of Marvel and DC, Spawn for example.

  • If you and Tim Gunn do this again, I'd love to see his take on the various looks for Luke Cage.

  • I'm a bit disappoint they didn't talk about the fantastic four new uniforms (was this video made before that? because it is forget what i say) and the gladiator armor of the hulk from both planet hulk and world war hulk

  • You need to do this again, I love Tim Gunn and don't really care for normal fashion or project runway.

  • I love the Tim Gunn Hulk. Big dudes always look great in suits; look at Kingpin.

  • No matter what he's wearing I can't take the Hulk seriously.

  • That costume @1:56 is the look superman should have stuck with.

    Any agreements here?

  • @CAPTSCRU33Y His current costume is actually very similar to that one. Thenly differences are the inclusion of the classic S shield, a belt, some added seams to make it look thicker, and the removal of the red patches on his abdomen.

  • @AceRyonik Yeah I know. Thank you anyway.

  • This is awesome.

  • I agree that the suit from 1:37 doesn't scream "Superman", but it gives Clark a very regal look. I'd love to see it as his primary costume in a future Earth.

Kal is our god, he just has to look like one and this hits the jackpot.

  • would love to get Tim's thoughts on the new wonder woman look

  • i was really impressed with Gunn's disquisition on why the x-men should have a uniform and why it's ok that the jla and avengers don't. it showed his presence there was not merely one of "and here we import some extra fashion expertise via a famous face from tv". really excellent stuff

  • @ceeeph That was actually ME who said all that about the JLA, X-Men and Avengers and my philosophy on who should and shouldn't wear a uniform. Tim did nod many times as I said that though and was in full agreement, as he is familiar with the three teams. And I like to think that all his other comments are proof that I didn't interview him here just because he's famous. :-) Thanks for watching, spread it around.

  • @CrazySexyGeeksSeries oops, my bad. the camera wasn't on you guys at the time so i didn't realise. irrespective of that (now discredited) point, i loved these two videos and shall indeed be linking them to all my friends. i look forward to any future collaborations between the two of you and am now going to consume the rest of your videos.

  • Okidoki.

  • In 4:06, the guy on the left isn't Cyclops; that's Iceman. But then the style they were going for that time was darn confusing.

  • @ianpatph I'm not sure what you're trying to correct. No one said the guy on the left was Cyclops nor did anyone think it could be. We're aware its Iceman because we're looking at him and we took it from a scan of Iceman #3 from the 2002 Icons mini-series. We were trying to show different X-Men in different costume styles. Iceman in a simple jacket, Cyclops in a customized jumpsuit, Wolverine in an actual costume.

  • @CrazySexyGeeksSeries Hookay, it was just a surprise they were talking bout Cyclops at that moment and then there was Iceman. (I gathered Wolvie was included only coz it was hard to remove him from the same cover.) But now I can see maybe it was for transition from just Cyclops to the rest of the group.

  • @ianpatph We weren't talking about Cyclops. We were talking about how the X-Men should dress and so we were showing different styles of X-Men uniform. At one point we referred to a belief held by Cyclops that cemented our view of how the X-Men should dress, but the conversation never turns to focus on him nor are any of his particular looks and outfits discussed between us.

  • After watching both parts of this bit, part of me is getting curious about performing a similar visual deconstruction for my own section of geek-dom in video games. Going through the Nintendo classic characters first with Mario, Link, Samus; the stylistic 90's with Lara Croft and Duke Nukem and Gordon Freeman; then into some of the more modern icons with Master Chief, Solid Snake and Kratos; and then taking a turn into the strange lands of the likes of Final Fantasy or Devil May Cry characters.

  • I would like to have seen some sketches or at least hear some ideas of what Gunn would do with some of these costumes.

I always thought Nightwing was kind of a stupid concept and name for Dick Grayson, because they spent months with him whining about how he's not Batman, and how he wanted to be his own man, and then he basically makes himself a watered down pussy version of Batman.

  • Captain America has the best costume

  • I absolutely agree with Mr. Gunn about Superman's costume. Many people wonder why certain superheroes and heroines are more popular than others, especially if you are a comic fan and have a plethora of person favorites outside the mainstream. However, what makes the most mainstream superheroes is a beautiful symbolism that leads them, their spirit which can be caught in the right artistic design of their costume. Superman, to me, is the embodiment of the 20th Century American patriotic romantism

  • im cuter

  • Comment removed

  • what about batmans new costume when it became Dick grayson batman

  • These videos are fantastic! Please make more!

  • @NedHartley - We'd love to, but we need donations to keep this show going and repair some equipment. Anyone who wants to donate even a few dollars should go to PAYPAL and send money to KistlerAlan@gmail.com. And tell others how much you like "Crazy Sexy Geeks."

  • The Superman costume that Tim loved so much actually did see print (more or less). It was the Kingdom Come storyline. Can you really call yourself a geek and not have read that?

  • @jak7890 Can you call yourself a geek and not realize that is NOT the Kingdom Come costume, it just uses the same chest symbol? Google "Kingdom Come Superman" and look again, there are about ten differences in design and art style.

  • I love how the discussion turned over to team uniforms and how the question of matching uniforms should be decided.

  • @WildGiggleGirl - Thanks, that's always been a topic I've felt very strongly about so it was fun sharing that in this episode.

  • Tim Gunn is THE MAN!!!

    this was great

    thanks for posting!!!

  • i really love this :D

  • I love Tim Gunn, such a fan of his.

Hearing "Robin is the good cop" almost made me spit out my drink in a laugh, thinking of Damian. But I think that the black, thicker more "pant-like" leggings modernizes Robin, and the hood, to me, says "assassin-raised."

Since you pulled up Nightwing, and I know that you were pinched for time, so it's not a big deal. I would have liked to see his opinion on the other two Robin's newer renditions of the Red Hood and Red Robin.

    I loved watching these!

  • @ChaoticButterfly - Glad you enjoyed it. And yeah, I definitely didn't mean Damian when I referred to Robin as the good cop. He's the exception. :-)

  • Tim Gunn is a gem.

  • @cdmar33 - So true.

  • I thought the cynical concept to robin's costume was that he was all bright and whatnot to draw away gunfire

  • I am so glad that I am not the only person who hated it when Robin lost the green in his costume after Infinite Crisis.

  • I was kinda expecting them to show the Hulk's getup in Planet Hulk & World War Hulk.

  • I absolutley love this! You both have such interesting points and critiques of these costumes! If you can manage it, please do some more of these!

  • I love this! It's great. I've always been a Tim Gunn fan, and it is wonderful to see him critiquing with his eye something that I would have never thought of. I think that we get caught up in the story and forget about how the costumes shape our perceptions of the characters.

And LOL at him liking the Hulk in a suit.

  • Too much DC :(

  • You could do ten of these and it wouldn't get old. Please do the Fantastic Four--and especially that trampy Invisible Woman costume from the 90's. Would also be interested to hear his take on the Bucky Cap's costume.

  • Perplexing!

  • what a great show. that is some celebrity capital spent on Tim Gunn. I love his sensibilities. the discussion could have easily gone full-nerd with explanations of why each character's costume changed, but im glad it didnt. this was a great snapshot of the evolution of costume that speaks volumes to the many eras of comics.

  • the arts are amazing

  • Does anyone know who the artist is for the image at around 2:04? Beautiful artwork, and I recognize it, but I don't know their name.

  • @Raspberryberri That work is by Gary Frank and is from the mini-series WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON.

  • @Raspberryberri pete woods.

  • Pinstripe Hulk was a good time.

  • I am in love with this. Sheer genius, this. And hilarious.

  • Subscribed because of this video. Haha

  • Ha, yeah, the mullet always pisses me off when I see it.

  • You should really show Tim Gunn the costumes from The Watchmen, namely because I want to know what he thinks of Ozymandias.

  • Tim Gunn is so insanely charming I would listen to him critique the outfits of cereal box mascots, but this is like a dream come true. I also like that he doesn't condescend to the host or to the characters - his critiques are very thoughtful without being parodic.

  • these are amazing

  • How could you talk about Superman without mentioning his underwear with belt loops? To me, that is the BIG flaw in Superman's whole design. The Wizard version demonstrates this problem by turning that element into two little stripes on his hips. To me, that never quite worked.

  • Could you please make more of these? This was so entertaining, and I would love to watch more.

  • I love Tim Gunn for doing this.

  • o this was too much, you guys rock!

  • It was great seeing all the artwork and costumes through the years!

  • I could listen to you and Tim gabbing and critiquing super hero- and villain!- costumes all day. It really gives an impetus to really stop and THINK about our reactions to the various costumes and how it affects our views of the characters.

  • @nicocoer Well, thanks! Tim and I will team up again soon. And if you're interested in hearing me speak more in-depth about super-hero costumes, paraphernalia and visuals, be sure to check out my upcoming work on Newsarama. - Alan

  • Awesome I resally enjoyed it and Tim Gunn is probably the only person I like in fashion business.

  • I'm very happy to see an extremely geeky video series that has some premium entertainment value with a host that restrains himself from being a wacky uber nerd! Please keep up the great work!

  • @nomadixxx - Well thanks very much, my friend. Hope you enjoy what comes next.

  • They should just put Tim Gunn in comics as the go to costume redesign guy. Can't wait for the next installment

  • Wonderful.

  • LOL Tim Gunn WOULD mention Robin's Doc Martens! I love him :)

  • Would love to see what he thinks about Scarecrow's outfit. A villains version would = <4.

Also, I'm pretty sure I have to write a song about Tim Gunn and superheroes. I really think that would be super.

  • Awesome video. I would love to see more. An "all X-Men" episode would be great. There are a lot of characters with a lot of different costumes and Tim Gunn really seems to know the characters.

  • LOVE these two parts. Tim Gunn is great to watch and its nice he has a sense of humor! Do more of these! :)

  • Great video. I want to see what he thinks about Power Man and Iron Fist. I think he'd have a field day.

  • @louaintclever I think he'd have a field day with a whole bunch of Black superheroes and kung fu superheroes.

  • Nightwing's black and blue costume is my favorite! He's awesome, I hope we get to see him wear it again and soon.

  • I wish you had explained some of Damian's personality to Tim, because I think his costume totally fits with the sort of Robin he represents.

  • @sofiabea22 - Much has been cut out so we could fit it all into concise YouTube episodes. You're seeing 20 minutes of what was a 40 minute conversation. Other than the hood, Damian's costume is not much of a departure from Tim Drake's original uniform and had scalloped gloves like Tim's second costume. So since there wasn't much unique to it, I didn't see the need to include my explanation of his character from an editing viewpoint. Especially when the video was already running long. - Alan

  • This is brilliant.

  • @firmitas68 - Well thank you. Hope you enjoy the other episodes. - Alan

  • I love these 2 episodes! I could watch something like this every week. I like the way you guys took one aspect of comics and went in depth on it. Another SUGGESTION: talking about the psychology of characters, and or how the way they dress expresses how they are on the inside.

  • I've been a comicbook fan for about 20 years and everything Mr. Gunn had to say is absolutely spot on. What a pleasant and knowledgeable man.

I would LOVE to hear his take on villains.

  • I love Tim Gunn's voice. I think he could be a superhero. I'm sure he'd be happy to be portrayed in a stunning yet subtle style combined with bulging thighs and rippling deltoids. He could talk crazed villians down with commentary on their capes. That's a superpower!

  • The original Nightwing looks like he's about to break out into dance anytime soon.

    Love this video! :)

  • What an awesome idea. You should do a sequel on villians.

  • @MrUblitzAlnight - Possibility. - Alan

  • @CrazySexyGeeksSeries I second the sequel thing!

  • I love Tim Gunn. I like this insightful look at superhero costumes. Maybe you guys can next look into superhero vehicles.

  • @MasonsTurtle - HA! Interesting idea. I'm not sure how much Tim is interested in vehicles, but perhaps we can get an expert on the subject. - Alan

  • Thank you. An excellent follow-up to the first. I look forward to any future videos in this series.

  • @MaryJesusJoseph - Just to warn you, we like to mix things up so superhero fashion won't be delved into in such detail for a while. Episodes coming up focus on new releases in fiction, what geeky things certain celebrities are into, the challenges of adaptation, gay characters and superheroes in comics, and an interview with Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) where we discuss how she directly and literally changed how some things are done at NASA. Hopefully, you'll enjoy those episodes as well. - Alan

  • @CrazySexyGeeksSeries I've enjoyed what I've watched so far, and I did subscribe so I'll look forward to future videos.

  • I'm digging her Iron Man shirt!

  • @aliccolo - Yes, Jennifer's very proud of it. I told her she looks good in ANY shirt, but she rarely listens to me. :-) - Alan

  • I'm glad this second part was put up. ^^ I love this! <3

  • Would like to see how Tim takes a look at some of the various DC generational characters like the Golden Age/Silver Age Flashes and GLs, other JSA characters. As for Marvel, a "Ladies of the Avengers" would be great. His take on the 70s-80s Mockingbird costume could be hilarious.

  • @viper3579 - Generational characters are definitely a possibility in the future.

  • I'm glad Robin and Nightwing got checked out in this one. I only just started watching the series, and it was because of part 1 of this. :-) Though, it would have been nice if you guys had looked at Static's costumes, from Static Shock. The comics' main costume for him is completely different than what he wears in the television show, and while the comic characters prefer the original costume, I personally prefer his cartoon costume designs, especially the one that was in seasons three and four.

  • Both of these videos were great. Excellent stuff.

I'm in complete agreement with the sentiment that the X-Men should have uniforms and not costumes.

  • lol this is awesome. Nightwing's latest costume is the best :)

  • I love this!

  • I'd love to just see Tim Gunn go nuts on Liefeld's work.

  • that was so interesting to watch...awesome job!

  • this is AWESOME! :-)

  • I'd like to see what Tim thinks of Deadpool's outfit. lol

  • Very fun! You should do this again.

  • I could watch a weekly show like this, fascinating stuff.

  • @0BatGirl0 - Well we're back to being a weekly show again, so hopefully you'll continue to think so. Check out our other episodes to see what else we cover. - Alan

  • Heheheh. =D

  • Very nice to see. Tim Gunn is very entertaining, perhaps I should look up his TV show.

  • Tim Gunn is great, you should invite him regulary.

  • I was expecting Alan to show Tim the battle armor that Hulk wore for Planet Hulk, but they never mentioned it.

  • @jbird188 - Sorry, we were running short on time. But I am planning a future thing where we look at various times several heroes wore metal armor who perhaps shouldn't have (anyone remember the silver Spider-Man armor?). So we may revisit Hulk's thing. - Alan

  • please tell me that there are definite plans to do more of these.

  • @xdeersx - .......... maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayybeeeeeee???? ((wink wink)) - Alan :-)

  • @CrazySexyGeeksSeries you are such a tease ;-)

  • @xdeersx - I hear that often. I think it's charming. :-D - Alan

  • @xdeersx - We'd like to do this again on at least three or four other themes, but we need help to keep this show going. So anyone reading this can donate funds through PAYPAL to KistlerAlan@gmail.com.

  • Tim Gunn is the best guest ever.

  • i could what Tim Gunn judge costumes all day

  • man, I've never watched, and never will watch project runway. But Tim Gunn seems like such a cool guy. If you could kidnap him and keep him in a basement to criticque costumes for a series that would be great.

  • @thefunkof30000years - Project Runway is one of the rare times I enjoy a reality program because the people involved are challenged to be creative and HAVE to be talented to be on the show in the first place. It's not just "oooh, let's see people not get along" or "wow, let's watch dumb people enjoy their ignorance" or "Man, he ate that whole lizard!" Glad you liked it. And yes, he is a cool guy. :-) - Alan

  • awesome!

  • I wonder why you didn't talk about the different Green Lantern outfits, it could've been a great way to talk about variations on the same theme

  • @Heroville - I decided that if we were going to talk about the Green Lanterns, there are so many variations and different personalities to consider (even if you ONLY count the Earth-born ones) that it would be best to save that for their OWN FULL EPISODE. So be on the lookout somewhere down the line (i.e., not in the next month). :-) - Alan
