That is a hard song, I could play the first two chords for years, but never knew where to go from there..
Page is such a creative dude, I just recently learned the unnamed chord in TYG (same one used in Wanton Song) and I am just amazed how Page would write and pluck chords like this out of who knows where. The Money Chord! Love it...
However you figured out how to play this, thanks loads!
Hey Amigo, I have been playing Guitar since 1974,Back in the 80's when I lived in Daytona Bch Fla. I had the blessing of doing openings for Pat Travers ,Robin Trower, Atlanta Rythym Section,Humble Pie and a slew of others..I have also taught Kindergarten at our church. I have to say that you are an amazing teacher! I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the videos I have seen posted here! I live in KC MO But grew up in N.Virginia. and I too am a Big Skins and O's and Nats fan! Be Blessed, thnx Warren
I like your videos and have learned many songs from you channel. The only thing is I always strugle with the tone. I might be learning a song and have it down some what good but then get stuck messing around trying to get the right tone. It drives me nuts. I have a Line 6 300 HD multi guitar processer with a cheap amp (Crate 120). Do you have any suggestions???
I've been playing for years & it's amazing to me how guys like this can pretty much nail it on so many songs & especially remember all these obscure chords. I also think I read on a Pete Townshend cover where he says he really doesn't use scales to learn these. Blows me away...
That awesome sounding chord at the beginning is E7-9 (or flat 9 if you prefer). This great rock song proves that metal (or hard rock) can have some cool "jazz" chords. Nice job man!
I have been playing guitar for along time and not getting anywhere. But watching you has changed things for the better. And i just whant to say thank you
Yeah but he also plays that song way different form the recording in that concert. Also the concert at knebworth he is at the worst hes ever been. just watch him play starirway lol he clearly wasnt the Jimmy from the early 70s.
@tMattLZ Don't take my word for it. Watch Zeppelin's version of Ten Years Gone at Knebworth and you'll see Jimmy play that one chord (it's not a D7) and you'll hear him hit that low D note (the E string dropped to D) when he does the heavy riff after the solo. Both of those are pretty clear to see in that Knebworth video, even if you can't hear it from the recorded version on Graffiti.
its driving me nuts trying to pick out the lead, i can get some, but that descending hammer on part and a few of the other notes i just cant see you do, please give a quick lead lesson, just slow it down a little n i can definitely get it, thanks bro
Great job on those solo backing chords. Thought I would add that at 9:12 I use an upstroke hitting all strings with notes fretted on D string 4th fret and G string 2nd fret, then following with a downstroke on the top two (thick) open stings
Funny chord would be from lower string: A F A D which could be a F6/A or a Dmin/A. Either way it's way cool. Almost a half diminished chord. Sweet video.
@chrishpippin With the high E you would have an A aug add6, or A6 aug, or A6+5, or something. The money chord would be an A dim7, or Cdim7, D#dim7 or F#dim7, interchangeable. In fact if you move it up 3 more frets, or down same, it repeats. Diminished chords are so fun.
First of all I think you are the best guitarist and teacher on YouTube. With that said, can you please post a lesson on how to play the solo from 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. This is one of my favorite guitar solos, and since I am a beginner I really need someone to show me how to play it. Thanks for all the great lessons, you're the best.
@nursetom61 If you're a beginner, I wouldn't recommend trying to play that. That's something you'd probably want to work your way up to. But if you're particularly determined, look up a YouTube guy called playguitarsolos. He's posted that one note-for-note, as well as a bunch of others.
Dude, you are a classic, the way you count off the frets "5th, 6th, ahhhh yes the 7th!"....We all know you know the axe like the back of your FREAKIN' hand! JKing ya! Another great lesson that further confirms what a master songwriter/melody writer that Jimmy P was. Frankly though, it ain't rocket science to play, as you show. Just a beautiful song though. Not the stomp of Wanton, but a nice reprieve from that stomp. There are few bands ever/since that could pull that off.
May I respectfully suggest that you run through the song first in real time, and THEN break it down...so those of us who can learn it by watching it once through don't have to go string by string through the whole song. Great work on bringing guitar playing to everyone.
@privettricker the lead bro????i can only get snippets from the full song, its a tough lead to break down, especially that hammering / descending part, thanks!!!!
Hey, man I really appreciate this lesson. It's a nice birthday surprise to see this posted just now. Gonna start learning it right now but any chance you could make a lesson for the solo too? I love this solo and I would much rather play the solo when playing the song than the backing guitar if possible.
Nice lesson. I just wanted to comment on the on the chord change you said was the most difficult part of the song. I find that if you use your little finger for the hammer on just before the change it's much easier to get the change right. I noticed you were using the third finger to hammer on. Anyway, give it a go. Hope it helps.
Also, the chord at 9:01 (the big ringing chord in the "did you ever really need somebody?" part) was voiced like this on the recording: 004200. D6add9. Nice tutorial, btw. Just piping in on the chords as if you are like me you like to play stuff "right." :)
@privettricker most definately, if you could break down the different lead parts, it would be monumental!!! its my favorite zep tune and ive already got all you've shown down in a day n a half, its so great your doing this bro, you know my obsession with the band!!!
@tingly7654321 You should look up some Free videos on YouTube. Koss was an outstanding player. Probably my favorites are the Beat Club versions of All Right Now and Fire and Water. His tone is insane.
I pretty much watched your acoustic cover of this song 100 times. Thanks for clearing up a couple of spots for me. I've learned so much from watching you play.
@TheStormtrooperrr You're not kidding. When they took my Hendrix down, YouTube warned me that one more copyright complaint would result in suspending my account entirely. So it's only a matter of time....
@TheStormtrooperrr I don't get it, either. There are tons of people who've posted complete albums, without even playing over them or anything. That's piracy, a blatant copyright violation, and there are literally hundreds of thousands of those on YouTube. It's nuts.
i was hoping you would teach the solo :/ i know the rest...

@privettricker its a D7 chord after the A going into that heavier riff. You play the the same kind of D in the intro riff. and its not in drop D
