Most parents don't know it, but they do sign to them by gesturing. Like this "You want a ball" -pointing the ball and raising their eyebrow) If the baby is learning from CI or new mapping for the first time (It usually sound static for the most part) and learning to listen with their implant is a struggle , They are really dumbing them down by pointing and gesturing. They should expand their gestures in ASL. No more beliefs that ASL affect speech!
I agree. As a student taking ASL and on my way to becoming an interpreter, I believe both hearing and and deaf children should be tought sign (as well as hearing parents with deaf children) .Besides, who wouldnt want to communicate with your child at such a young age?? Its frustrating to see that people are still so close minded and dont understand the importance of communication. Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)
I think ALL deaf children deserve ASL from birth onward, Hearing parents should be instructed to immediately learn ASL and to try to use it all the time at home. Imagine if all hearing parents did this. What a difference it would make in the children's lives--and the benefit to the whole family, too, being bilingual and being able to interact with the Deaf community, Better for everyone that ASL comes first, everything else after, so the children get their language needs met.
Hello there, It was sad to see no sign of ASL. I know how frustration it is. I'm in the same boat as you became deaf due to meningitis. I became deaf when I was six months old on account of meningitis. I started attending deaf school at age of two. You did good job on the vlog. :) Take care.
