i actually remember writing a report on this in highschool, while we studied the "dark ages" when my teacher said nothing important happened anywhere except for east asia.
i later came to college and a professor of the "dark ages" told me about the golden age and renaissance of islam; i was particularly interested in the scholarship around aristotle (avincena and averoes), and how they dealt with science and religious belief in the Qur'an.

the contribution of islamic and arab societies has been largely neglected by Europe; probably due to some old religious bias.
unfortunately, most of my fellow americans don't watch the BBC, or any international news.
