I'm not going to point out the obvious that her intonation is off. But in my opinion... i would rather have some one who is lost in the music and expressing emotion than someone who has the intonation perfectly and is a robot.
Err her intonation is really far from perfect to the point where I would almost say bad ^^; but perhaps it's just the camera that really affects pitch
AND my god she missed out the whole interesting part. for fuck sake dont play it in public if you cant play the whole movement. Im a musician and we have so many very young brilliant musiciand that play better than most of us that are older. so im not having pity for young muscians. if they cant perfor then dont...sorry i sound like ottal asshole but...
I hate it when young talented people think they cna play everything. this is typical a little asian talented girl who is good for her age but SHOULD NEVER play this before she is older. musicality isnt understood, technically lot of issues. She is very talented so dont get me wrong. just saying that it need time before playing thiesd pieces in public. good luck for the futur. kind regards
@tlcooper93 : Perhaps she was, and I don't necessarily think she should have been performing a piece like this at this stage, but learning it certainly hasn't done her any harm - last I checked she is studying violin at Juilliard...
she's very good for her age but she really shouldn't be performing a piece like this if she can't play in tune. Also, there are times when it sounds terrible because of the way she is using the bow.
omg any1 who gives this a bad review wake up. seriously lmao look at it! it is amazing! what is wrong with her playing it? she can play it well and shes 9! so what maybe she will play it better in a few years but she still will whether she plays it now or not! she is amazing jeeze.
i'm 17 and i'm playing this. i think Valerie's performance was AMAZING for a 9 year old, especially one who got her first violin two years prior to this???? O_o
Everyone needs to give this kid a break. She has an incredible gift and though the performance was not flawless, she does show remarkable talent and musicianship. How many of you played that well when you were 9? I think that if she can make it through such a difficult piece by memory at her age, then she should be playing the piece. She will only gain from the experience and will be well ahead of the game in years to come. Kudos to you Jung Kim!!! :)
I'm sure she's talented and has great potential but whenever young children attempt to play difficult violin concertos it always sounds like crap. Just wait a few years, okay?
@Spambinator i doubt he would think its rude, because to have a young child interpret this piece is just something amazing and he would be damn proud of her like i and many people are(:
Would it have hurt them to 1) have that piano tuned and 2) acquired an accompanist who didn't believe herself to be the second freakin' coming of Rachmaninof?
To be honest she is too young to play this piece. She is amazing for her age but she is out of tune alot and her technique really needs to improve before she attempts the big works.
@missm0zart With your uncivilized comments, you are the one way out of tune. Achieving this level of violin artistry at this age is simply miraculous. She doesn't need to improve, it is you in urgent need of improving your congested brain functions. And don't comeback with silly answers, next time, I will not be so nice.
@LordMSh Oh my gosh! I was only saying the truth! I think she has amazing talent!!! But, I just think she should have waited a bit before attempting such a difficult piece. By allowing herself to play out of tune or with poor bow technique at this age only makes it harder to fix intonation and bow issues later in her life. Her muscles will be learning wrong. Im not being a bitch, im just stating the facts. I think she will go very very far as a violinist!
@missm0zart As civilized people, we have an obligation to promote and support in every possible way these kind of activities. We will have a much better world with people like this young lady than what we see everyday in public around the world. Exhibition of talents like these must be promote, but not denied with poisonous words, and should be used as an example of excellence to the others.
I have enjoyed tremendously the performance of this young and talented ARTIST, I wish good luck.
@LordMSh 31 people so far agree with my comment... I do not actually think you have realised that I think she is a great violinist. I was just trying to offer constructive critique. Stop trying to be all high and mighty with your statements as it is a little pathetic. Everyone is intittled to an opinion as long as it is not abusive and mine has never been that. You, however, have been quite rude to me calling me uncivilized and that I have "congested brain functions" and I do not appreciate it.
@missm0zart Regrettably, your comments are not constructive at all, but destructive. I don't think you are familiar with extreme difficulties involving playing a violin; if one is good enough, it takes at least 10 years for a beginner to draw a pleasant sound from a violin (Perlman) that is why it is called the Devil's Instrument (I suggest you see the DVD with the same name, milady.) And about people agreeing with you, I don't think most of them have seen a violin in their whole life.
@LordMSh Wow, do not judge me before you know me mate! I am a violinist myself. I have been playing since I was 5 and I know the struggles that go with learning the instrument! I also myself, learnt the the Bruch when I was too young and, as much as I would have liked to think I did, I didn't nail all the intonation so I was just trying to share some first hand advice. Now I am studying violin at Uni and I can say that had a waited a bit longer for my technique to improve, I wouldve aced it!
@LordMSh I am not going to do that because I am 20years old and of course I can play this better than her! It would prove nothing. It would also be very petty. She is far superior a violinist than I was at her age that is for sure. For bloody sake I was just trying to pass on my wisdom. Now, I have nothing further to say on this matter, so, have a nice life I guess.
@missm0zart You don't know what you're talking about, do you? I have the sheet music for this concerto and have played it myself. This little girl has played it perfectly...her intonation is pitch-perfect. perfect tempo, great technique, great phrasing, and she payed attention to all the slurs. Her bow mechanics are perfect as well! She's done a fantastic job with this violin concerto so you're wrong.
@zucchini2007 Actually, she is a bit off on the high notes, but her intonation is quite good in the tricky parts. Her technique can improve a little on this piece, though.
@SpartanLion12 If I'm quite honest, she plays this piece much better than I do! But it's a challenging piece, there are lots of double-stops everywhere. Especially high up on the A and E strings. So I commend this little girl for the great effort she has put into this piece. I practically had to teach myself how to play this piece, because violin lessons are too darn expensive.
To all those who make comments about her skills and expect flawless performance, may I say that she got her first violin March 2005. Good progress after only two years of devoting her time not only to the violin but the piano as well, dont you think?
I am not worried about her intonation, this will come with practice. Love for music and Heart is what I am looking for, and she was given plenty.
I'm a 24 year old student working to be proficient enough to play this piece, and I have to say, your playing was so beautiful that I cried. Do keep up the good work :)
All I can think when I see these videos of the child prodigy at work is what I could've done if I was focused at their age. Oh well... probably best to be the adult who adores her viola than the kid who is forced to excel at it.
I know that was horrible you don't ever play a piece that you can't play. Even if you are a 9 year old. I mean it shows some much about you. First of all it obviously says that she doesn't care how she plays it as long as she can get it out. What musician thinks like that. Yeah she's 9 but play mozart a major or something.
wow she is very good not good but AWESOME her intonation is almost flawless and she's got the feeling for this song that a lot of 9 yr olds don't have. wow she is my idol XD an i'm 12 lol.
lol and a proud retard at that :) so what if she's horrible, in my opinion she's great. everyone is indebted to their own opinion on a person's playing.
What a shame! I went your site and I noticed that you are just big time loooooooser and heartless, full of jealousy jerk. Get a life!!! Can you play like her after 1 years of learning ??
disneyprincessluv, I agree, but it is very common in youtubes to behave like this about things which are not even true (like bad intonation), or relevant, with little genius babies (almost) who are almost proffessional after a year or two!
This, however, i've noticed, often comes from other very young children who see them as their friends, and feel inadequate that they too are not the same, and therefore look for anything.
You can't really expect them to be perfect either!
I agree somewhat with missm0zart, but aside from intonation, I think she has good technique. Violin614 and disneyprincesslove, I do agree that people could be nicer when criticizing, but it always helps to improve one's playing if he/she is willing to take it.
Regardless of your age, this is a very technically-challenging piece for anyone. So don't get frustrated, take your time to get the intonation and tempo right. You're only 11 years old anyways, enjoy your childhood.
But intonation is absolutely critical when playing any piece. And Valerie's intonation was just perfect. I'm very impressed by the emotional maturity that she has at only 9 years of age. She's like a mini Sarah Chang, lol.
it seems that the pianist is just bashing the piano there does not seem to be any dynamics on the part of the pianist but the violinist is very good but i feel will improve greatly over time
I have no trouble with the 1st page, I have trouble with the 2nd and 3rd pages because of all those flats, sharps, and naturals all over the place. And I have most of the 2nd movement memorized, and I'm still working on the 3rd movement.
WOW, I cannot believe that she is only 9 years old!! She has a very mature-sounding vibrato and technique for her age. She puts so many other 9-year-olds to shame, because many kids her age are just sitting at home playing video games.
This is a technically-challenging piece, I have a lot of trouble playing through it because of the intonation. The thing is, I've been playing the violin on and off since I was 14(much older than her).
WOW just I don't have words for this little girl, this concert is not so easy, and almost the notes are so clear, and she's only 9?? what can we spect couple years more.Great!!
For the critics in here.. who don't know how to play a single note on the violin i tell you to hold your tongue...and be a little more mature . She is very very talented and sweet.
and you kelly0216 and alot of other criticizers. Just because someone post of video of them playing doesn't meen it has to be critcized. For everyone who makes retarded comments imagine your at young age and you put your performance on youtube, and all people want to say is that its out of tune. AND, for her to play this at there at her age, she already had to "practice like hell." (o.0)
Pretty experienced to just even learn this peice for her age.
Lol why just asians? Just saying because the time ive played violin ive seen SO MANY early starters, both asian and non asian alike in number.(Like in all state or certain "school of the arts" symphonies.) Learning at such a young age is a smart move, considering that a childs brain is like a sponge at such a young age! Im sure she'll get places if she sticks to it(^.^)
Sorry, but i hate it when teachers and parents push their children too far. I've personally been a victim of that.
However, I really liked the performance (for your age). However, what I would suggest is slow down a little with the repertoire. You have your whole life to play all that wonderful music. Take a piece that is easier technically, (ie. Mozart's 3rd) and focus on the musicality and just enjoying the beautiful sounds that you could make. (What I did... :D)
At the entrance at the second chord at the beginning, the high D and B flat, do NOT under any circumstances pizz it to check intonation. You need to practice it enough so you can land on it perfect during the rest.
Other than that, just watch intonation and bow control, and you'll have it just fine!
yeah?! This is not good, you idiot?! Excellent it is!!! She is only 9 years old! It doesn't matter if it's not perfect intonation, she has quality no one has, musicality and passion. There are so many people that can play with perfect intonation but still lack musicality and play like machines. By the way, can you do better? I bet you can't! So don't criticize little girls. thats sad that you don't have confidence that you have to put down others to make you feel better, violingirl1994
I do appreciate the effort that young talents playing difficult places, but I doubt how much music they can get out besides playing out the notes printed on the sheetmusic. There are lots of material behind the notes to be explored over years. - The mood of a 10-year-old reading a Shakespeare's sonet is definitely different from a 50-year-old doing the same thing.
I do agree that a 10y.o. reading Shakespeare is different than 50y.o., but not necessarily worse. Just different.
It appears, in Valerie's case, she gets more out of every piece of music she plays than most college level students. I have watched many of her other videos, violin as well as piano. I know for some extremely precocious, talented musicians, they need the challenge of more difficult pieces to keep them motivated and engaged intelletually.
although she is very good for her age, you cant overlook some things. musically it sounds good but it seems the technicality is a little off. but still those things arent very big problems.. good job
Oh my god...9 years old?!?!?!?!? I'm 12 and I'm learning this...you are amazing and you express so many emotions in your playing! Mistakes don't matter and you handled it perfectly! I'd rather listen to this then some profesionals!
I'm not going to point out the obvious that her intonation is off. But in my opinion... i would rather have some one who is lost in the music and expressing emotion than someone who has the intonation perfectly and is a robot.

She needs a couple of years of maturity before going to Bruch. Obviously, she's very talented and good at violin for her age.
But the interpretation's way off (even given liberty), and the intonation's... yea. Given some time and good foundation, she can own this piece.

wow she is very good not good but AWESOME her intonation is almost flawless and she's got the feeling for this song that a lot of 9 yr olds don't have. wow she is my idol XD an i'm 12 lol.

lol and a proud retard at that :) so what if she's horrible, in my opinion she's great. everyone is indebted to their own opinion on a person's playing.
sakura678910 3 years ago 2
What a shame! I went your site and I noticed that you are just big time loooooooser and heartless, full of jealousy jerk. Get a life!!! Can you play like her after 1 years of learning ??
I bet you suck!
disneyprincessluv 3 years ago 12
disneyprincessluv, I agree, but it is very common in youtubes to behave like this about things which are not even true (like bad intonation), or relevant, with little genius babies (almost) who are almost proffessional after a year or two!
This, however, i've noticed, often comes from other very young children who see them as their friends, and feel inadequate that they too are not the same, and therefore look for anything.
You can't really expect them to be perfect either!
violin614 2 years ago 8
I agree somewhat with missm0zart, but aside from intonation, I think she has good technique. Violin614 and disneyprincesslove, I do agree that people could be nicer when criticizing, but it always helps to improve one's playing if he/she is willing to take it.

im playing this and im 11 and it is so hard!
no1superme 3 years ago 3
Regardless of your age, this is a very technically-challenging piece for anyone. So don't get frustrated, take your time to get the intonation and tempo right. You're only 11 years old anyways, enjoy your childhood.

thx

there were a couple minor intonation problems, but overall amazing for a nine yr old

I'ts so amazing and incredible and fantastic that I can't explain it. wow... 9 years old?????????????????????????????? 0.0 :)
Keep going girl! (but... just slow down in your repertoir just a TINY bit and you will be PERFECT. Oh well, nobody's perfect.) :)

Very cute and lovely performance of Bruch.
msandls 3 years ago 7
i don't care if she's out of tune or not..
she's got the feeling and the rhythm of this song... and to get that feeling @ that age is incredibly amazing...
she's so talented.. if she just work harder... wow... she's so good....
lykfe 3 years ago 5
But intonation is absolutely critical when playing any piece. And Valerie's intonation was just perfect. I'm very impressed by the emotional maturity that she has at only 9 years of age. She's like a mini Sarah Chang, lol.
zucchini2007 3 years ago 4
it seems that the pianist is just bashing the piano there does not seem to be any dynamics on the part of the pianist but the violinist is very good but i feel will improve greatly over time

Oh dear God.
This is so depressing.
I've been playing 12 years (I'm 16 now) and I can scrape my way through the first page of this.
:(

What's so depressing about this??
zucchini2007 3 years ago
I'm in the same boat. I can get most of the first page down but im killing the rest of it
violinrox24 3 years ago 3
I have no trouble with the 1st page, I have trouble with the 2nd and 3rd pages because of all those flats, sharps, and naturals all over the place. And I have most of the 2nd movement memorized, and I'm still working on the 3rd movement.
zucchini2007 3 years ago 2
Very good for Valerie. I'm impressed but I feel like it could have been better with some more time. She has a lot of potential though. cheers!

... what do you mean thats hard to gauge outa 10 its prob like 8 harder than any suzuki crap.
teh5o 3 years ago 2
WOW, I cannot believe that she is only 9 years old!! She has a very mature-sounding vibrato and technique for her age. She puts so many other 9-year-olds to shame, because many kids her age are just sitting at home playing video games.
This is a technically-challenging piece, I have a lot of trouble playing through it because of the intonation. The thing is, I've been playing the violin on and off since I was 14(much older than her).
zucchini2007 3 years ago 2
You've got the feeling. I love this piece. Go girl, keep on rockin'. Happy new year from the Netherlands.
Azoicum 3 years ago 5
WOW just I don't have words for this little girl, this concert is not so easy, and almost the notes are so clear, and she's only 9?? what can we spect couple years more.Great!!
curchaco 3 years ago 3
impressive !
For the critics in here.. who don't know how to play a single note on the violin i tell you to hold your tongue...and be a little more mature . She is very very talented and sweet.
Keep up the great work !
petrostheviolinist 3 years ago 7
very mature phrasing for her age. a lot of potential. hope that she doesn't lose interest too soon.
eunheejun 3 years ago 7
just do something that is your level, you dont need to rush into the big stuff. work on your intonation

chinesewolfofmibu 3 years ago 4
ur sort of out of tune,
so try to be more careful about that.
how to do that?
well, you gotta practice like hell,
and try to record yourself playing, and listen to it so you know what is wrong.
and you have to take breathes after each phrase.
other wise, ur good!

graaaciex 3 years ago 7
and you kelly0216 and alot of other criticizers. Just because someone post of video of them playing doesn't meen it has to be critcized. For everyone who makes retarded comments imagine your at young age and you put your performance on youtube, and all people want to say is that its out of tune. AND, for her to play this at there at her age, she already had to "practice like hell." (o.0)

i love asian girls who can play the violin magnificently
GotMilkRice 3 years ago 2
that didn't sound pedophillic
chinesewolfofmibu 3 years ago
Pretty experienced to just even learn this peice for her age.
Lol why just asians? Just saying because the time ive played violin ive seen SO MANY early starters, both asian and non asian alike in number.(Like in all state or certain "school of the arts" symphonies.) Learning at such a young age is a smart move, considering that a childs brain is like a sponge at such a young age! Im sure she'll get places if she sticks to it(^.^)

Great job for a nine year old,
very connected to the piece.
Bravo!!!
soundviewbx 3 years ago 6
Sorry, but i hate it when teachers and parents push their children too far. I've personally been a victim of that.
However, I really liked the performance (for your age). However, what I would suggest is slow down a little with the repertoire. You have your whole life to play all that wonderful music. Take a piece that is easier technically, (ie. Mozart's 3rd) and focus on the musicality and just enjoying the beautiful sounds that you could make. (What I did... :D)

FilipeBarrosAlves 3 years ago 3
her tone is excellent, as she plays longer and perfects her intonation, she'll be great. :)
however, she's hacking at some of the notes, and it's too fast for the mood of the song.
just putting out suggestions, don't get all mad.
dragonx2040 3 years ago 9
Nice job first of all.
Suggestions:
At the entrance at the second chord at the beginning, the high D and B flat, do NOT under any circumstances pizz it to check intonation. You need to practice it enough so you can land on it perfect during the rest.
Other than that, just watch intonation and bow control, and you'll have it just fine!
Great performance!
Decimotox 3 years ago 8
this is great. I am in my first year of college and this is my second week working on this piece, and play it at about this pace.
She's going to be amazing. She must be in like 4th or 5th grade-- i couldn't even shift then. haha.
woot!

i dont find it good!!!!!
sorry, but the intonation isnt good and the sound is scratching and its simply not good!
violingirl1994 3 years ago

- The mood of a 10-year-old reading a Shakespeare's sonet is definitely different from a 50-year-old doing the same thing.
gustavyeung 4 years ago
I do agree that a 10y.o. reading Shakespeare is different than 50y.o., but not necessarily worse. Just different.
It appears, in Valerie's case, she gets more out of every piece of music she plays than most college level students. I have watched many of her other videos, violin as well as piano. I know for some extremely precocious, talented musicians, they need the challenge of more difficult pieces to keep them motivated and engaged intelletually.

oh i saw her play kriesler..
although she is very good for her age, you cant overlook some things. musically it sounds good but it seems the technicality is a little off. but still those things arent very big problems.. good job

Hey Valerie, sounds by the comments you already put half the fiddlers out there to shame.
Also, how do get that tiny wee fiddle to sound like a strad. or a Del Jesu?
You got what it takes baby, loved it, just loved it.
