ah come on i work on computers, when i get any hard drive i immeditly do a fresh instal of windows witch completly erases everything or i take a win 98 disk and boot up into cmd and get into fdisk and erase it that way but im one of the more honest people i dont go through ppls shit idc about it im just interested in the computer working
would have been easier to put on a drill press and just turn it into swiss cheese..since this routine only cleared half (or less dependent upon the # of platters) of the data.. but physical destruction on any level will do the job.
I hope you realize that that was only one side of the platter and there are usually at least two or more platters to a hard drive. Data is still recoverable from the other platters!
you have to destroy all of the disks if you really want to make sure its unrecoverable. you only did 1 side of 1 disk. you can use Drano. it devolves aluminum and glass. make a nice soup lol.
Police use a technique known as "skimming". Basically it takes the damaged layer from the disk, leaving it shiny and new-looking, and 100% readable. It's magnetic storage; damaging the surface won't affect any data.
@Diel1024 Pas si idiot. Quand t'as un HD qui est mort, et que tu le met aux ordures, on peut te le retrouver et te piquer des infos qui se trouvent sur le disque simplement en le bricolant.
i got a old hdd and i feel like destroying it cause there are some infomation in it i just don`t want to keep at more O_O maybe i will just take out the hdd dics and cut in to 2 will do the job =D
Of all these dramatic methods the easiest way is to remove the central hub (comes off easily) remove the platter, shatter it and burn the bits. Quick, quiet and beyond doubt.
for eveyone bitching why this guy distroyed his hard drive It could of been dead, or even just had data from years, (personal data) and got a new computer and needed the data to be distroyed
i regularly destroy hard drives, im a writer so if comp fooks up i destroy hdd so engineer fixing it wont get my unfinished books, i jus grind the discs to nothing, gotta take all the surface off to a depth to clean em completely, best jus grinding em up to nothing
Why...why not do a zero fill format on the thing, then format it and then use it again or sell it at reduced cost as a spare? If that drive was functional that was stupid! If it was dead anyway then I rescind my statement.
@PrometheusFX someone with a really high interest in the data can recover after a Zero fill (though it is totally impractical and will probably cost like millions).
There are many companies that drill through the platters (!) before they throw away their HDDs containing confidential data.
Then again, there are Top Secret Government Contractors like Lockheed Martin that do a simple "delete" and wonder how their files end up in the hands of nigerian scammers (no joke!),
You know all that did was make the first platter unreadable. There are still other platters that havent been touched with information still on it and if somebody really wanted to they could still get it.
just get a drill and drill into the center of it at full speed (we have to do that in our company to make sure data isnt stolen when discarding of hdds
I just checked with a computer repairman I know he assured me there is NO way the data on here is readable, The datasavers info they retrieved was from a computer that the drive was protected by the drive case and the computer case as well, it was not exposed to fire directly.
I want to back up nafongo22. I work at a computer repair shop one of the things we do is get data back for people with failed hdds. While this would make the data unrecoverable for us there is a company we send out priority jobs that we can't handle called drive savers and they can recover data even with extensive physical damage. That damage doesn't change the magnetic properties of the platters. In fact that is a rather inefficient way to make your data unrecoverable.
actually if someone could recreate the data on this quite easily, it just makes it unreadable by a standard hard drive. only way to truly erase the data is by using a hard drive cleaner utility. If the drive fails, you could always melt it. that would work, however simply torching it with a blowtorch doesnt destroy the data, it still retains its magnetic properties.
i never said it does nothing. it makes it unreadeable to just about anyone without highly specialized (and expensive) hardware. Data on a hard disk is not stored on the surface of the disk, its stored within the metal itself and uses the metals magnetic properties to store and retreieve data. simply roughing up the surface does not erase the magnetic data stored within the metal itself.
@nafango22 the metal layer you talk about is so thin, you can get it off by scratching it with a knife. Some HDD Platter are made of glass, with those it is rather easy to see (you can scratch off the top surface pretty easily)
@HumbleLovingBeliever *This* drive? Probably not; I was talking specifically about killing it by microwave oven though.
If some US government agency had countless millions to spend and infinite patience they might be able to retrieve *some* data from the few unscoured areas of this drive, but... rather them than me :-)
Yh i agree with you hdd is prone to crash. Beside that hdd uses more electrical power, it's heavy & chunky. I hope one day soon most computers replace flash drive to replace hdd.
dunno why we haven't already switched. i mean, sure, ssd capacities are meager compared to their hdd counterparts, but to me, they should've developed and focused on ssd a long time ago.
ah come on i work on computers, when i get any hard drive i immeditly do a fresh instal of windows witch completly erases everything or i take a win 98 disk and boot up into cmd and get into fdisk and erase it that way but im one of the more honest people i dont go through ppls shit idc about it im just interested in the computer working

This is useful if the drive is completely defective and unrecognisable by computer/BIOS.
If possible, it's best to run Zero-Fill format multiple times, and then bring it to the electronics recycling place.

The microwave destroys the drive's electronics, it won't destroy the actual data on the platter so easily.
If someone *really* wanted your data, they could easily transfer the platters or replace the electronics and bingo.
Not very likely if you're just wanting to erase your credit card info, quite plausible if the FBI are after you though.
