I like to watch Sissel singing because of her smiling face in her performance. She can reach every high notes effortless - that's why she can keep smiling faces all the time. It's happy to listen to her calmly angel voice.
People can be too snobby when it comes to music. Everyone has their preferences, but to call a singer disgraceful when he/she moves away from their expected "slot" of music, is very narrow minded. Sissel has never allowed herself to be categorised as a singer of one particular genre, much in the same way as Hayley Westenra and Sarah Brightman, and as artists it allows for a much wider repertoire and more musical exploration.
I felt I had to make my own comment on Sopranelsker's comments. I feel you are at best confused and at worst very disrespectful of what most people listen to (ie pop music!). The reason you seem confused is that you have many songs in your favourites which are pop standards ("Both Sides Now", "You'll never walk alone", "Wuthering Heights", "Time to say goodbye" etc). Songs from musicals also feature prominently! Now where do you draw the line?!! (part 1)
erasmus, you're perfectly right about me totally lack respect for most grown up people's taste of music where they don't have a clue about objective tools to, in a scientific way, validate what is quality music. Most people which studies say to be more than 99%, still are hooked into their youth taste of music which they gathered by tradition and not by any precise decision. This thread more than confirms my ealier observations. The world is filled to the edge with immature, inautonom crackpots.
Sopranelsker.....who are you to determine what is "quality music"?You are so very judgemental and falsely imply that people's taste does not change with maturity!
Music appreciation is generally subjective and not dictated by someone, like yourself, who would attempt to determine what is acceptable!!
georgie, I never said taste in music doesn't change with maturity. In fact, it can easily be read into my text my position is quite the opposite. My point being most people don't mature with age.
Music appreciation is neither subjective nor objective. It's an incompatible concept to both, because of will. When people want to appreciate bad quality music, we can conclude they've got bad taste. Where bad being a duality away from both white noise and a single sinusoid.
georgie, I'm obviously not from this planet filled to the edge with morons like you who thinks personal orgin is relevant. An inteligent person would ask for a clearification if it's something in a message he doesn't understand.
All though you are right about 'ears' being the arbiter for what is good quality, you really missing the point, being we know a great deal about what the ears hear and what it listen to be good. From this we can easily conclude what is good and bad quality music.
I respect Sissel for her Accomplishments but to me Lene Marlin will forever remain the Best ! I don't know what she said about Lene but it had to be Good.
I actually love when Sissel sings pop... no woman artist walks as adeptly in the both the pop and classical worlds.
You can be a sublime and extremely talented vocalist and still dip into the pop world once in a while. "All Good Things" was probably the most amazing album Sissel ever released, and it was 100% pop. Yet i still love her when she sings opera, classical compositions, folk, country, or whatever.
She is Sissel. She sings all music. And she sings all music very, very well.

OettingerCroat, and you're among the swines I was talking about. Why do you feel the need to follow me here now after you have banned me from all your tubes presumeably because you cannot handle a critical word about Sissel?
This is yet a confirmation you are what I called you in my last reply in PM.
My impression is she does the wide range of songs and styles that she does a) because she excels at them all (i.e. does them justiuce) and much more importantly b) "because I like it" (her comment on DVD concert "All Good Things" re her eclectic tastes per C&W/bluegrass "He's Gonna Mary Me")
bi1uruben, I do understand the argument, and further more, I accept it to be true. She does indeed excel any pop tune by her voice, but this is not really the point. Even if she like crap, she should not, if got mature taste, neither smear down her name nor raise crap, by her beautiful voice. In fact, she's very disgraceful when she's casting perls before swine this way.
Sopranelsker:Singers/artists are creative people who have the right to express their talent in whatever style they chose...it is called ARTISTIC FREEDOM! In case you haven't noticed,a majority of A list opera singers have done crossover recordings and performances.
I cannot understand why anyone would call Sissel,"very disgraceful"...that is truly ludicrous!Whatever your interpretation of "mature taste"is....it seems to be lacking any understanding of musical artistic expression!

georgie1, thanks for joining this fresh debate.
I do agree an artists got the right to express their talent in any way they want. I fail to see how it is possible to read into my text I want a law to forbid such.
Let me help you understand how Sissel is very disgraceful to me. Imagine she was singing a fight song, one from the commie regime Stalin's Soviet or Pol Pot's Kampuchea. This is how it sounds in my ears when she's doing pop. Did it get clearer now?

georgie1, to me the analogy was extreamly descritive and appropriate. You see, for me, communism and fascism are to political systems as pop is to music. If you believe you're able to make a better analogy, feel free to try.
What are they talking about? Could anyone translate please?

I found your attempt to compare music to political systems a little bewildering, almost like comparing a cat to a polo mint!
Your comment about OettingerCroat was unfair also. He loves Sissel's music but can be critical of her when he feels she deserves it.

Totally agree with all parts of your post, erasmusthewise!!You are indeed,WISE!
Being a fan of Kiri Te Kanawa,I have at least ten crossover/pop/b'way cds she recorded and enjoy them as much as the classical/opera!

What planet are you from,Sopranelsker?
All you write is gibberish/gobbledy gook and double speak!
Makes no sense......maybe lost in translation!
Once again.......you do NOT set the standard for the quality of music......it is in the ear of the beholder!

byte2binary, I believe I can teach Marlin how to sing, but last time I asked her she said she rather be a pop star.

Are you Sure !!! I would say more than a Pop Singer she related more to Folk like Cat Stevens or Sarah Mclachlan.
