I remember this on MTV. I was in 5th grade and drew a line down Scott Baio's face on DYNAMITE magazine and colered half his face dark and the kid behind my desk knew exactly what I was doing for he saw the video too :) 1981 baby
Anyone remember Cafe Jacques? Rupert produced their classic albums from the Seventies, Round the Back and International. I've started a facebook page for them- check out 'Fans of Cafe Jacques' for latest news on the band.

Did rupert hine ever have a connection with robert palmer at this time? I have a vague recollection of them being linked musically...i suppose I could be imagining it.
A lot of music from the early eighties sounds really cheesey or just plain twee now...but not this guy. He still sounds fantastic and his words are still relevant nearly thirty years later! I can see now that I wasn't alone in my music tastes in the early eighties. I always thought I was just about the only person who listened to him, at a time when everybody else was listening to Human League and blitz dancing!
It was the other way around. Bowie has changed his sound so many times, and his early 80s sound was influenced by Hine, Brian Eno and others. His later, more successful career as a producer made him even more influential.
But there is a direct Bowie connection: they are wearing the same outfit. Bowie wore this same suit in part of the "Ashes to Ashes" video - as did Kate Bush in her video "The Dreaming".
Saw this on Night Flight back in the 80s, it made me buy the his trilogy of LPs at the time, finally got them on cd a few years ago when they were re-released. Classics.
I remember going into the "record" store and asking for Rupert Hine and they would respond "Oh the Pina Collada song?"
Please if anyone has Thinkman vids can he uplode or any other videos with RUpert hine i have all the thinkman songs exept for The formula, legend,Best andventures, ill send song to anyone no prob but i wont stuff too very good stuff!
My skype is The thinkman of Blackmores Night-Aint no love in the heart of the city
If anyone has a prob. contactiking me jst tipe it here.
Couldn't agree more.Rupert is an all-time hero of mine, his 80s "trilogy" of albums way ahead of it's time, and Jeanette Obstoj an incredible lyricist.I liked Thinkman but to me it never reached the same heights. Thanks so much for posting this.
Thank you for posting this. I literally have not seen this video since maybe 1982 nor even heard the song, even though I frequently think about it. What a great flashback.
Cool! I was probably the one who asked about it. When I first saw this on MTV, it kinda reminded me of the video of "Wouldn't It Be Good" by Nik Kershaw. Similar use of Chroma-Key.
One of the things I love about this video is that Rupert is wearing the exact same outfit Kate Bush wore in her video for the song "The Dreaming". David Bowie wore one in the video for "Ashes to Ashes" as well. Nice to know the all shopped at the same place. Must have been a shop specializing in clothing and Fairlights.
thank you kindly, I heard this in 81 twice maybe. And never forgot it. And couldn't find it

I'd reason to think this video was directed by David Mallet, the director behind David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" video.

Is it just me who thinks he looks abit like Roger Daltrey of The Who?
This man is way too underrated.

Rupert Hine is one of the most under-rated artists from the 80s in my view.

I didn't hear this song until 1991, but it blew me away at the time. It still gives me goosebumps.

The same suit Rupert wears here was used by David Bowie in Ashes to Ashes.

He never fronted Black Sabbath. You might be thinking of Dave Walker from Savoy Brown.

Same outfit. Both Bowie and Kate Bush wore that particular "jumpsuit with tubes" outfit in videos. "Ashes to Ashes" and "The Dreaming" respectively.
