Holy crap! I've been trying to look for a window manager like this. I typically work from 3-4 windows at the same time and it's annoying to keep trying to rearrange them by hand to optimize my workflow. I've seen it in the ports collection on my FreeBSD box and thought it was a WM that was intended to replace the stock WMs found on Desktop Environments (i.e. kwin and metacity), but this is more what I've been looking for.
A 'desktop' doesn't really make sense with a tiling wm. The whole idea is that your desktop doesn't really do anything useful anyways - its best to just arrange windows automatically and use screen space efficiently.
Plasma just does widgets and the panel essentially. You probably wouldn't want to use it.
how can I get awesome setup easily and painlessly in gnome without restarting?

So you use KDE 4 apps with Awesome, but what about Plasma? Have you tried it with Awesome, and if so, did it work?
