James Stuart Blackton's "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces" is the first animation (1906) but it was done on chalkboard. This cartoon by Emile Cohl is the first animation done using drawings on paper.
Never knew that - France sis a lot for animation by the looks of it. The Lumiere brothers has some funky pictures of birds flying and horses galloping and now this guy.
Interesting that Cohl recognized many things that are only possible with animation. Prior to modern special effects, it was nearly impossible to show this range of surreal transformations using conventional techniques--I particularly liked the sequence where the figure gets sucked into a champagne bottle, which subsequently blooms into a flower. Of course all of this was possible in short form with flip-book animations before the advent of film.
The cowboy with the oversized cowboy hat jumps from the horse and runs towards the camera. The screen goes black. The white lettered words, "Meanwhile, back at the ranch ..." appear. The scene with another cowboy inside a room in conversation with a female in petticoat ...
by todays standards this is done all the time and there are many youtube videos like this and they get hundreds of thousands of views. that being said I have better things to do then what them... again.
This is about a century old, and yet its fascinating.

I thought Humorous Phases of Funny Faces by James Stuart Blackton was made before this. I read that it was made in 1906

I think the slightly bad quality is nice because it enhances the surreal feeling of the video.

just saying, but 2 years earlier than this, J. Stuart Blackton made the VERY 1st animated cartoon. Its called "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces"
Search this and this is the VERY first...

Someone should clean up the footage. Wouldn't take too long - I guess!?!

WOW, I thought the first animated movie was of a Brontosaurus walking and eating, 1914, this is much earlier and even more primative.
