its not as hard as you might think. im a drummer myself and i do it all the time. you just have to press the stick horizontally against the rim and move your arm up and down while keeping your fulcrum loose. the stick does most of the "work."

Johnny Rabb uses free hand technique all the time. There's a video of him explaining it. Also there's alot of extreme metal drummers that call that technique a "gravity blast" you can search that up too.
