The worst/best thing happened to me on my first level ever. I was inexperienced, so I didn't pay that much attention to the floor...And while mining, I fell into a pitch black cave. First a skeleton shot me, which I killed. But then a creeper came up behind me and blew up, taking all but 2 of my hearts. I quickly ran into a cave and barred myself in. I saw green, thought it was a creeper, and in a panic, sealed myself in completely. Turned around, and saw natural obsidian vein, diamond and gold.

fun facts about diamonds: there are usually 3-4 diamonds in a chunk, whitch is 16 by 16 and 128 deep. diamonds are found on layer 18 and lower, so that makes the chances of fnding diamond in a specific layer of a chunk about...3/15. the average strip mine fully reveals 2 layers, and partially reveals 2 more, so the chances of finding a diamond in a chunk sized strip mine are around 9/15. a chunk size strip mine can be accompished in a few minutes, making diamonds not so rare :).
