  • haha I remember my mom watching this show and me hating it to the point of leaving the room AND I LOVED TV! I'm 31 now, no kid, not married, I rent a room in a house with other guys. This show is totally unrealistic for 2012. It's funny the only part of the intro I vaguely remember is the guy hanging himself with his tie.

  • I used to watch this show when I was a teenager. I so wanted to grow up and be like these people.

  • Wow...this brings back memories...watched the first episode while pregnant with my son, who is now almost 24, and continued to watch it until it was cancelled in '91. I loved it when this theme came on, because it meant it was time for me to settle down and curl up after a long day!

  • my parents named me after "ethan weston" in this tv show, who was he? im trying to find out but its proving difficult :)

  • @EJES2000 Ethan was the son of Elliot and Nancy (Timothy Busfield and Patricia Wettig).

  • I love this piece of music.

Funny, I don't care for the "extended" version so much. It lacks those cleanly-heard, "clock-ticking" strings near the end. I was in my early-through-mid-thirties when this show was on, and just hearing the opener was always therapeutic.

Anybody know what THIS particular version is called? The theme music was changed, slightly, every few seasons--they also didn't make this incredible piece, by itself, available to the public for a long time.

  • We really gotta check ourselves if a theme song from a TV show is pretty much better than most music you hear today. and im not talking about pop music. also the so called quality music dont come close to this. its not about being young and old. its music - listen to the musicians to the quality of recording, to the sweet melody. where did melodies go?

    damn it....

  • I just remember Al Bundy always ripping on Thirtysomething

  • I was a teenager when this came out - yet I understood good writing and programming. I also visualized myself in the roles a 'long long time' down the road (or so I thought). This was an excellent show, until they killed off Peter. Nevertheless, brings back awesome memories

  • Great show at the time. Now it looks way old. I must be getting the same way. That sucks...

  • Great theme tune and a great show. Used to watch it as a kid with my mum. I loved Melissa and Gary! Melissa was my inspiration to go to art school and become a photographer!

  • My Mom used to watch this when I was little. Not crazy about it but it brings back good memories! Lol

  • I hated this programme as a young teenager. Never forgot the music tho.

  • The 80's, the age of the Yuppy. It was also the age when television was still worthwhile.

  • The brilliant series of Thirtysomething is now shown on the new sky channel called Sky Atlantic on 108, and it just began and started since yesterday morning at 10am, and 3pm, and all all of the episodes will be shown tomorrow and next week also. I have really missed watching that great show.

  • to be honest most thirty somethings now aren't even married and have roommates

  • @illuminatioracle Because companies pay hunger salaries that don't allow full independence.

  • The trials and tribulations of upper middle class yuppies. Stupid assholes like these created their own drama......

  • I miss this show mostly because the theme song was the greatest! It still makes me smile.

  • This is one of two shows from the late '80s I wish ABC hadn't canceled so soon. The other was Just the Ten of Us.

  • @jsrosa1282 They cancel all the shows that are spot on. Too critical, too empathetic, too philosophical. It happens in scifi too, for example Total Recall 2061 or something. Those shows would open the eyes of the consumers and underminded the delusional effect of TV.

  • @teemuruskeepaa Don't you mean 'Total Recall 2070'?

  • @dondonp12004 yes

  • Does any know what instruments they are using in this theme song? My son and I have a bet. If you don't know please tell me where I could find out. Thanks!

  • @MikRoss2

2 Guitars, one acoustic, one 12 string. Piano, rhythm sequencer, synths/keyboards. This could be done on one keyboard with multi track recording, but that was not as big in 1987 as it is now. There are distinct sounds of simulated strings, a "Hammond" style organ, the bass, and of course the main melody, which is a simulated Shakuhachi mixed with just a touch of a vibraphone sound.

That would be my best guess based on my experience as a composer. Hope that helps your bet!

  • God< I really miss that show!

  • i got so sick of listening to mel harris's character whine.
