Pick cars that are roughly the same size/criteria.they included the acura zdx n subaru outback, both much smaller than the lincoln or chevy, which raises the ques whats their criteria for choosing these specific cars. srx over bmw x3, 4runner over highlander n was it neccesary to put both the equinox n terrain, same car diff styling

I'm in agreement that the Subaru Outback has more in common with a 4 door sedan than that of an SUV, handling and all around feel will be better than that of larger SUV which has higher ground clearance and a higher centre of gravity, personally I feel the Subaru should be challenging the station wagon market.
I'm italian. form me some american care are terrible for design. too massive and dumpy! I think are all petrol engine. now the petrol costs 1,65 euro/liter (2,204 USD/0,26 gallons) it's incredible a large use of petrol engine for these cars! are better for city cars or sport cars.

Everyone is complaining that they aren't suvs. When did it ever say an suv is big and bulky? It's SPORT and UTILITY. As long as it's visibly a lot bigger than a car, I think any wagon could be a SUV. The outback fits fine in there because it can do a host of utilitarian things(utility) and it's a fairly enjoyable ride, although the older outbacks are more fun.
This isn't even a compitition of SUVs, they are all crossovers. Big fricking difference. These are soccor mom grocery getters, not all terrain vehicles. Not saying they are bad, just not what they are suppose to be testing.
I would like to know why all these people keep complaint that some of these cars arnt SUVs? When this video has nothing to do with SUVs it's all about a sport utility which is a large variety of cars, watch the video people. The Subaru had every reason to win because it fit everying a sport utility should have that's why Subaru has won it two years in a row.
Or, you could put a larger engine that gives the vehicle better towing and hauling capabilities, but doesn't get very good fuel economy. What to do? Ah! How about a turbocharged diesel engine! They provide the best of both! A diesel engine gets the best fuel economy, provide lots of low-end torque which is important for towing.
I've always preferred truck based SUVs. You can take them off road if you so choose and it can take it without much protest. Trucks (utes) are made for carrying cargo, the truck based SUV is good at that. My only complaint would be the fuel economy that's expected from such a vehicle. One could put a smaller engine, and get better mileage, but it wouldn't perform as well at towing or carrying loads as it would with the larger engine.
why did the outback win? it's a STATION WAGON. elderly people drive those, not normal people who drive crossovers or suvs. 4runner should have won. it's the only true suv.

Really Sport. Come on, and stop kidding ourselves here. These are UT vehicles. They carry things and people well, and get you to and back home fine. Sport has nothing to do with it. With the exception of the Lexus and the Acura, I like them all. The Outback would be all I need though.
You really have to try hard to find something negative to say about the 4runner. It's stayed true to its roots - a body on frame truck based SUV. It's the only vehicle presented here thats worthy of the SUV name. Shame on the other car makers

no matter what criteria you use, you're still comparing the SUV with each other. I think the most important criteria which most of these reviewers ignore is customer satisfaction. ask the people who use these vehicles on a daily basis. even if consumers are biased, you're including a lot of people and data and subjectivity evens out and only then can a true winner be revealed. afterall, all reviews are directed toward buyers.

And to add to all of that there is no grand cherokee... I dont have to say much after that, but if it was there it would have absolutly kicked all of their asses. But because there is no choice of a GC i would take the cadillac or the lincoln.

@tankxE80 LR4 Is the only one missing and the LR4 is very similar to the 4Runner just not a V8 anymore. Grand Cherokee?? so ur tranny can fail on you in 2 years. My 96 4runner ltd, is far superior to all of those women looking cars except for the 210 4runner SUV.. My 4runner was sitting in a storage for almost 6years with no maintenance. Drove her home that day 200 miles with O problems. after about 6months i got caught up with all the basic upkeep and replaced a few simple parts. Like new Now

no matter what criteria you use, you're still comparing the SUV with each other. I think the most important criteria which most of these reviewers ignore is customer satisfaction. ask the people who use these vehicles on a daily basis. even if consumers are biased, you're including a lot of people and data and subjectivity evens out and only then can a true winner be revealed. afterall, all reviews are directed toward buyers.

@dhom100 I have to disagree with the asking of the daily drivers comments.A lot of people who buy SUV stick with either their category of what they grew up in,or just simply like it because of the brand.They didn't have all these cars to test drive and compare too.The dealer just told them yes,it can offroad and it has 300hp.Buy it because its a good brand.My parents bought a Mercury Mountaineer,that right there says they had no idea,the subaru won fair and square.Drive one,you'll understand.

You tested SUVs on that 2-mile stretch that ANY car can handle without a problem? Any car, absolutely any lame sedan can handle a road like this. This test is a joke. On the other hand, 99% of SUVs do not leave pavement at all. What is the point in SUVs then? Get a normal car and save gas.

@razi0004 True but its not all about that, its the most versitile suv out there...and i have to admit subaru is, ive driven and owned many and i once wasnt a beliver of the hype but i was converted when i bought one, and this was an old one handles like its on rails 175hp h-4 felt like a 6 cylinder, good vehicles.

And to add to all of that there is no grand cherokee... I dont have to say much after that, but if it was there it would have absolutly kicked all of their asses. But because there is no choice of a GC i would take the cadillac or the lincoln.

Its boring, ugly, looks like a simpleton, its slow, its less exciting than walking up and down my driveway every day. I wouldnt waste my money on it. The Cadillac obviously had the best looking interior and the exterior styling is incredibly SEXY! These people from Motor Trend have always been against American cars. Why is the 4Runner even in this comparo? It is NOT in the same league as the others. It is also UGLY, UGLY, UGLY, UGLY, and did I mention that it is UGLY?
For my money, I'll take the Cadillac.

The asian dude is contradicting himself in almost every sentence. Oh I want technology, oh there's technology here but I don't want buttons. This car is made for off road driving but it looks like its made for that too much. The Lexus is soft and comfortable and engulfs you luxuries but its "not exciting", umm just saying some people buy a luxury car for a smooth ride and comfort. The stupidity of this is almost funny.

But firstly, I find the world has gone wrong. Until today I have not fully comprehend & accept the man-made artificiality term called "SUV" Sport utility vehicle. Mostly are invented for heated competing marketing purposes. We are totally spoilt for choice. Fortunately the result /winner here was the Subaru Outback.

@tankxE80 LR4 Is the only one missing and the LR4 is very similar to the 4Runner just not a V8 anymore. Grand Cherokee?? so ur tranny can fail on you in 2 years. My 96 4runner ltd, is far superior to all of those women looking cars except for the 210 4runner SUV.. My 4runner was sitting in a storage for almost 6years with no maintenance. Drove her home that day 200 miles with O problems. after about 6months i got caught up with all the basic upkeep and replaced a few simple parts. Like new Now

Honestly, how were the Acura or Subaru part of an SUV comparison? Nothing against them in terms of quality or anything, but in my mind neither seem like SUVs. The Subaru is a wagon and the Acura is a sporty sedan. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just my thinking...
