Ok, scrap Crusade, Rangers, Lost Tales and go 20 years ahead and just start fresh, make it so one clan/faction/fleet of shadows refused the call of Lorien and refused to go beyond the rim because they feared death so much and wanted to be the last of the first ones. Now they emerge with reconfigured ships, new allies and a new plan to gain control of the Alliance, calling for new efforts by rangers and their allies to form a defense. It can be a whole series about the return of the shadows.
Actually, it was two Whitestars and one G'Quan Cruiser. They were attacking two different Shadow vessels, but they not only killed that one, they obliterated it.
In fairness, we're talking about a First One ship capable of dissipating energy into space (those "legs" are energy diffusers) & whose primary weapon can cut through a ship's hull like a hot knife through butter.
The Shadow representative was so spooky, hsi best line "my associates will let you know when they will request a favor from you", or something along those lines was great.
