im a former st. louis city resident and im sorry to say, mr. mccrakcn is absolutely right, our beloved city suffers from a horrible school district, mishandled urban development, and some serious lasting racial divides. i hate to disagree with everyone, but st. louis stands to become even worse over the next decade unless something is done.

Let me school you in geography. There are states and one is called Illinois and one called Missouri between them is a river which is named the Mississippi. With me so far? East St. Louis is in the State of Illinois and Saint Louis City is in the the State of Missouri so in effect East Saint Louis is not a part of Saint Louis City. East Saint Louis IS part of the "Greater Saint Louis" area which is a Metropolitan Statistical Area.

One could rebutt that Kansas City is the same. Only Kansas City is ONE city divided by a state line. The difference being that they don't try to remove themselves from the other side of the city because it is not the highest violent crime per capita city in the US. You example is false Kansas City, KS is not the same as Kansas City, MO both are independent cities with their own elected governments. However, they are part of another Metropolitan Statistical Area known as "Greater Kansas City" area. Not to mention that the two cities are no where near comparable in terms of population. Also East Saint Louis is not #1 in violent crime per capita it is ONE of the top cities for violent crime, just being accurate something I know you have a hard time grasping.

The only reason that KC has different elected officials is because of different state laws regarding taxation etc. Ask a resident, it is ONE city. On a serious note, the major difference in St. Louis between 1904 and 2009 was the amount of influence wielded by the black population. In correlation, Austin has recently seen a large influx of black refugees from Hurricane Katrina. Is this Brewster suggesting that the supposed decline in St.L is due to the black population? Is he indicating he'll "do something about it" there?
