Supposing that both ships would have gunners, with about same skill, Yamato would be able to engage Iowa first, so Yamato would have an advantage of 1-2 salvos. After that, no one can tell for sure ...
Yes, it's hard to tell which ship would win, as the conditions of battle inject circumstances that mere side-by-side comparisons do not. One salvo, hitting a vital point in the ship, can do much more damage than several shells striking well-armored positions.
See "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" by Hornfischer for a great account of the Taffy 3 versus Japanese surface force at Leyte Gulf--stirring and well-researched history.
The Yamato did in fact turn away from the attack of 3 DD's & 4 DE's. The Yamato was forced back by the topedo attacks and never the Yamato was never able to get back into the action of the battle. 2 U.S. DD's, 1 DE and 1 escort carrier was sunk. 3 Jap heavy cruisers sunk Adm Kurita lost control of his shipsdue to the bold attack of the Amer ships & aircraft. He could have had a major victory, but ended up as just another defeat for the Japanese Navy.
Kurita did not know that ,all US heavy units were sent to Surigao Strait. He also believed , like most people, that US carriers would never be left with only a DD/DE screen. So ,when he found the Taffy 3, he thought he was fighting against a vastly superior surface fleet, so he decided to withdraw. If he had not withdrawned, a great part of the Leyte's invading fleet would have been easily destroied .
dude. those planes taking off were japanese kamikaze heading towards leyte, most of them never made it to their targets bcoz they got shot down by usn fighters from carrier task force.
i know this bcoz im from the philippines. the yamato ran away to japan with minimal damage, yamato fired like 4 or 5 salvo from those 18.1" guns. statistic also include that the yamato mainly used its 2ndary batteries rather than its main armament. what a shame.
it would have been nice if the iowa class fouth em
