it just goes to show how commercial dubstep is.... you got people filtering through from one of the newest music scenes in existance destroying the feeling of one thats probably the most diverse and creative genres ever created... How is this? Drum n Bass used to be an alternative for people who disliked commercial music its followers were a minority who took pride in the music and community they were creating they didnt want people changing it they wanted it to be excepted for what it was...
I was standing next to Matrix when I heard this drop for the first time. Blew my mind. I asked him if I could have a copy. "Nah - it's the only one I've got". I thought - hold on a minute mate, HE'S YOUR BROTHER!!! lol. Amazing tune.
P.S Dubstep is NOT a genre or follow-on from DnB. Granted, there are similarities in .the type of basslines used. Check it out: Reggae+ Break beat dance music=Jungle. Jungle lead to DnB.
Reggae DUB MUSIC + some Jungle basslines(slowed down) gave rise to Dubstep.
The common link between the two types of music is REGGAE. It always amuses me when I read or hear youngsters today, refer to Dubstep as something new or a follow on from DnB.
@Peopleitsbad Jungle is dnb you twat, and dubstep was sort of an experiment of half tempo garage or something with grime, sure influenced by reggae and dub (and dnb/jungle) but still.
@ripstian First of all, sort your manners out !! You don't know me from fuckin' Adam. Keep your '..twat..' remarks to yourself. Now then, I shall clarify the points I was making regarding Jungle / DnB and Dubstep. My original post gives some explanation, although I can understand why you may have mis-understood. I started listening to this music(and raving) back in 1994. Back then, everybody who was part of the scene refered to the music as JUNGLE MUSIC, probably due to the phrase....
@ripstian.... 'Concrete Jungle' meaning a rough built up urban area, where most of the 'Heads' enjoying and making the music, were from. The music was very much shaped by what was called then, BREAK-BEATS, an example of which would be, the now famous AMEN BREAK. The JUNGLE MUSIC of 94-95 is quite distinctly different in PRODUCTION sound than what was labelled DnB. The term DnB, wasn't regularly being used about the scene until '96. The name came not from the scene itself, but from the music media
@ripstian.. who wanted a more mainstream friendly name and also a less controversial term than Jungle, ie, mainstream thought the term JUNGLE was racist, due to the large number of black people involved with the music at the time. Intrestingly, once the music was labelled DnB, it did lose SOME of its EDGE and ATTITUDE- far less breaks, more straight foward 4/4 beats and other little things that an outsider may not have notice. Granted, the overall difference in sound between JUNGLE & DnB is....
@ripstian... relatively small, but THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, for the reasons I've given and others.Like looking at identical twin brothers, but you can see small differences in how they look and behave, and therefore can distinguish one from the other. As for DUBSTEP, it originated from DUB reggae music!! If you doubt what I am saying here, I would suggest you go listen to Dubstep artist RUSKO, who is a very good example of what I'm talking about. Even the imagery RUSKO used comes directly from...
@ripstian ....DUB REGGAE MUSIC of the 1970s, not as you say, "...sort of an experiment of half tempo Garage or something with Grime.." ???? With all due respect, your description dosen't make much sense, "..sort of...", "..or something.." I would strongly reccomend that all lovers of Dubstep, find out a bit about SCIENTIST, SHAKA, and if possible, JAH MIGHTY OBSERVER, all big players in the world of DUB REGGAE MUSIC of the 70's&80s -learn your history and pedigree, of the music you love :)
@Peopleitsbad ... Dubstep maybe influenced by dub music but i wouldn't say it originates from it. From what i've heard of it actually does come from garage/2-step. Try watching the Red Bull Music Academy interview with Artwork for further info on this if you're interested.
@Toothpasteification Dubstep is kinda a mash up of DnB, house, and hip hop. Listen to the drums. A lot of times there's a hip hop beat. It doesn't have the drum and bass shuffle but it follows a lot of the same basic song structure and the synth sounds are pretty simillar. There's wobble in DnB and techstep but it's not as emphasized as dubstep.
@Toothpasteification - I agree with this Tooth... being that I got heavily into UK Garage and 2-Step subsequent to it's prime, I fully was engulfed during a time where other sounds were morphing from it... and it was during this time where 4x4 and Niche came into the mix, with lots of wobble, and then Grime, and then Dubstep. In that order, that's it. And as for this track... it is Techstep DnB - nuff said! Now let's all liquid and x-step to this!!!
@Toothpasteification Thanks for your comments, always interesting to put an opinion 'out there' and see what comes back. Also thanks for directing to Red Bull Music Academy, again interesting. I'm pleased you at least acknowledge the influence of DUB music on DUBSTEP although I note you disagree it originates from it. We can possibly sit infront of our PC's, posting opinions back and forth and still not agree, so I think we shall have to agree to disagree on this one.......
@Toothpasteification It's ironic, that a discussion about the origins/ influence of Dubstep is taking place under a great DRUM&BASS tune!! Just shows how different genres of music influnce/originate/effect each other.
One of those post '95 tunes, that mark the transformation from Jungle to Drum and Bass. You may ask, "What's the difference?" You know what, words fail to describe it. Its all about the sound, the feel and attitude, not just of the creators of the music, but those who listened to it at the time.I personally feel that Jungle was more exciting, rebellious and uncompromising. DnB was more pleasing (acceptable) to the mainstream. These guys, Rush&Optical, definitely kept the DnB side of things up tho
@Visionsdreams There just different types of music ! I love DNB and definatly more into the scene/music/club nights/radio than dubstep but i like dubstep aswell (Burial/sleeper/Skream/Zomby/Rusko) is that not allowed loool ! ?
@jaffabeans apparently this is not allowed. Even though these guys ^ , Noisia, BSE and Kryptic Minds make dubstep....These are not small names on the 'scene' but the jealous scene will freak the fuck out if you look at that other music!
@MizTameRumors yer i agree all music is opinionated you can only really say something is better in terms of sales and influence ! This tune kills it ! Have not heard Noisias dubstep is it any gd ? love a bit of Kryptic minds
Anyone saying that their copy of Gas Mask on cd is better because they need to keep mids in their music must realise that this tune was not directly released on cd or mp3 so therefore they are playing a vinyl rip. Thus the quality will always be inferior to the original mastering and pressing on plastic.
This tune rolls the fuck out! PLAY IT ON PLASTIC ONLY!! Anyone playing this on a cd or an apple mac will get slapped up. Its on Discogs for dirt cheap, you have no excuse!
@Leatt25 Except, you know, vinyl is vastly inferior quality to lossless digital formats like the CD. I like being able to keep the frequencies other than the mids in my music.
@djwtfcat HELL FUCK YES. I can still listen to my 10 years+ neuro & tech tracks in heavy rotation and never get bored. Dom & Rolland Killa Bites is like a weekly staple for me
ever since dubstep has started to gain popularity I have grown more and more to hate it. something about it just feels lazy. like dance techno. DNB,EBM, and big beat stand out, and I dont feel like a tool for listening to it.
Isn't it funny how you can listen to DnB for years and still find great tracks you've never heard of.....this is one of those tracks for me. P.S 60 dubstep listeners gave this the thumbs down so that doesn't count
@Gunth0r Of course. Dubstep is just a sub genre and the craze at the moment. As much as i like it, i dont see dubstep surviving for the length which drum and bass has. Two decades and running, Drum and Bass will never die!!
@xFURRY94x ummmm Dubstep is like 10 years old, and how many sub genres has DnB spawned in its history? Liquid funk, and drumstep (which is a copy of dubstep anyhoo) And for a music that ain't gonna last, it sure has taken a lot of DnB artists away, like Icicle, Nero, Kryptic minds etc....such an ill informed post, and for the record, no i ain't a DnB hater, been into it since the beginning, but DnB has stagnated for the last 5-6 years, only progression is speeding up dubstep to make drumstep
@zZUnofficialGhostZz Misinformed is a bit rich bro. But anyways, thank fuck for the genre police. I thought this vid would just be of some tard doing an Ed Rush and Optical rip-off. Oh? It is Ed Rush and Optical? ED RUSH AND FUCKING OPTICAL?!?!?!?! Excuse me I've just cum my pants.
@zZUnofficialGhostZz Dnb has spawned Neurofunk, Liquid Funk, Drumfunk, Hardstep, Darkstep, Drumstep, Jump Up and Inteliligent Dnb and every of this sub genres is listened from alot of people.
And maybe dubstep is from 10 years but its popular from 2-3 years and no one can tell its future, i listen to alot of dubstep too but Drum & Bass will always be the best electronic genre ever!
@zZUnofficialGhostZz You probably don't follow the scene that much any more. 5-6 years ago was when it was stagnating. If you like tunes like this then i recommend getting back into it; the Russians are on fire
AAAAAH. Heard that track ~2004 in a Quake 3 Trickjump-Movie and been searching for this since then. Finally had luck browsing >THIS TRACK IS SO KICK ASS< !
@ozzyg77 there are a few producers going back to old school sounds.....check out a few new tracks by DJ Fresh-specifically Mission to Mars and u will see what i mean.......lots of 90's influences from diff genres in there! not the same as this style......u just have to listen to it if you really appreciate old school music from the early 90's!
@ticketmob What is with all the hate on us Americans? I was reading comments and I really didn't see any UK hate but maybe I didn't go back far enough. Come to the states and we actually respect other cultures, while other cultures seem to hate on us when we visit their countries. The world criticizes Americans based on our Government. It is a shame that even through dnb that thrives in a relatively underground culture, we can't get past stereotypes...

@ozzyg77 hahahahahahahaa surprised u even wrote sumtin... so simple but so good, perfect to hardstep it!!!!!!1
ruby1uby 7 months ago

Maybe, just maybe its an awesome idea to come to Machtig with Noisia?
Rikkkj 10 months ago
@Rikkkj
um. Noisia are incredible but they aren't the only Neurofunk producers.
Although man, I think Noisia along with Black Sun Empire and Spor took Neurofunk to a whole new level.
This track is dark, love it.
