I remember the first time I ever saw one of these for the first time 3 years ago... i'm 26. I was walking down a lonely forest trail and heard a light intermittent knocking, at first i ignored it, dismissing it as a downy but then i looked up, what i beheld was a big beautiful pileated woodpecker drilling a large square hole in a tree 15m away and 10m high in that tree!! I was breathless!
Nice "flight"...The Pileated, Downys, Hairys, and Redbellies, show up in my yard regularly...and Northern Flickers once in awhile...I have only gotten video of the Pileated so far

love it. I captured a harried woodpecker on my site at mrose13006. I am going to try to get all the birds that come to our feeder.
