What really made it, compared to so many other war stories, is that it recognises other ordinary personal problems going on as well as the Big One. Maybe for a lot of people, politics meant as little as it does now. I particularly love the French Police Officer's attitude: we too have been bedevilled with pompous idealists (who would sacrifice every Frenchman for 'French honour') and geriatric turncoat heroes. It may be 30 yearws after the events and 30 before our time - but it still rings true!
