Hey Tomo, been a fan of yours for a while. See a bunch of your videos and you're a great guitarist. I just joined in a duo with a rhythm guitar player and vocalist and I'm looking to get a John mayer signature strat such as this one and get rid of my gib les paul. Can you give me your opinion on the JM strat and how do you like it in comparison to your other stratocasters?
Do you have material on how to play improv jam styles like this? I would like to learn how to carry the melody while being able to solo and not have any backing track or rhythm guitarist with me =) I hope that makes sense haha
It must be awesome playing on an old student's signature guitar and to be getting visits from him and everyone singing along to his songs. AND to know that he learned a lot from YOU!
@2220Blues A workman should never blame his tools, anyone who can play guitar can play even a quier like that. Don't be so ignorant as to think you need a signature or expensive guitar to sound good. It's all about your skill.
Nice playing! I reckon you have a john mayer signature guitar, i also have one. For the price - do you recommend this guitar? What is you professional opinion about it? :)
hey . i saw a vid of you playig with john mayer? is that correct?
and want fender amp would you recoment me for mayer tone? he used a vibro lux i think? but i don't know and amp that can handle band practice btw. grats
@dnnysrock John Mayer can make that tone on any amps pretty much because his tone comes from how he feels music, how he touches his guitar with that feeling so you can start with Fender Blues Jr or Fender Hot Rod or Fender Princetone Reverb etc. Play with Fender tube amp and a strat. All you need is work hard!
this is great! i have heard that john plays with a jeff beck signature on crossroads, and i am going to buy soon, so would you recommend the jeff beck or the john mayer signature? i know one big difference is the big dipper p/ups on the JM and the lsr roller nut on the JB... thanks!!
Mr. Tomo Fujita. Great guitarist and skillful musician! so glad to have you here being in this era. keep it up! and please come visit Seattle some time :)
@FreaquedeMusique You don't know if you don't try it. Contact Berklee. Practice your foundation. Fretboard Harmony, triad, blues, rhythm guitar, away from Tab & internet.
Hi Tomo, just bought the John Mayer Black1 and I'm planning on buying a new amp, which one would you recommend, the Fender Blues JR or Deville 212, the BLues Jr is cheaper but if you say that the Deville is much more worth it I'll save more. Thanks!
dude you should get the blues junior, I mean you can put in a jensen speaker in it and the tone would be much better than a Deville. Also I think a Fender Princeton sounds tons better than the deville
Mr. Fujita. i'm guitar player in south korea. how do you think about quality of john mayer signature guitar?(not black1) i always enjoy your playing. thanx!!
Mr. Fujita, TOMO, if i may, I've been playing about 7 years now. I've never had a lesson before. Was wondering if there were some key things that i should teach my self, or maybe even take lessons, or is it too late for that? Love your playing and Johns as well. @soc555555 Dude, it's sold out from Fender. Find the right people to buy it from. Just special ordered my black1 from a guitar shop today and should get it this week.

@TomoFujitaMusic you are obviously a better player, but do you hear it? just a slight similarity in progression. i am always very critical of myself when it come to my writing, and i feel that maybe i pick out similarities when there aren't any :P
@tubingforever He is just playing with emotion. I think it doesn't matter what guitar players look like when they are expressing themselves. It's all about good stuff you hear right?
hey i have a quick question if you were going to buy a fender amp which one do you think would soung closets to a john mayer sound and how do you get accepted to berklee because i would love to got there and have you as a teacher you blow my mind

@TomoFujitaMusic what if I dont have a fender tube amp but a vox Vt30 (hybrid(tube and solid))? Oh yeah, I'm planning on getting a CP60 strat or a 2010 american special strat. Which would pair better for bluesy stuff?
@JulianHuxtable well i'd recommand you the squier classic vibe strats, they're way better than mexi strats, i tried most popular models of strats and the cv strat just seem incredible for the money, they won best guitar under £ 600 award last year by MIA i think. Its on fenders web, try the squier cv and compare it to mexi strat u'll know what im talking about :P and btw john mayer uses Two Rock or Dumble amps, but those are super high end, means cost a fortune. yeah fenders are the alternativ
@TomoFujitaMusic Interesting is it the tweed or tolex and what speaker? I play on a similar rig but dont quite have the same tight bottom end so i'm trying to figure out how much of it is in the JM Pickups
Hi. Just wanted to say I really appreciate the stuff you do. There is nothing like that here in Scotland. I have the same guitar and it is beautiful. I was just wondering. I have seen two of your students (john mayer) being one playing with the hendrix/srv style wraparound thumb which my guitar teacher constantly tells me not to do. As these are my three favourite guitarists I am torn between doing it and not doing it. So I was just hoping you could tell me your thoughts? Thank you kindly.
@lbul6 Thank you so much! I see more students (at Berklee) who wrap around thumb.. it's great to hold 6th string and play other strings with other fingers. but there is other way to use , place your thumb around the neck. So I suggest to you try both ways and do what you like and you don't have to show all you can do. Do both and understand both ways.
hi man since you are what I would consider a "real player" could you give me your opinion on if I should get the 70s vintage reissue strat or the mayer one? (or at least what you think each´s weaknesses and strengths are) maybe its a long question but had to ask anyways
And tips for not getting nervous live ha because i have trouble with that
@MatiBtodo14 Even each model, you want to play it yourself. I don't know how you like it by your taste. I really want you to go check them out. Sure. Preparation. You should prepare as much as you can. When you perform, don't worry about what other think or mistakes. Enjoy!
@TomoFujitaMusic i am curious because i want to know how much you think he has grown as a musician. He is an unbekievabke musician, one of the best of in a very long time and, too be able to have taught him befire his fame would have been incredible
@RightOnBobbyD Thanks for writing. These are (your thoughts) very important to know. No doubt that John Mayer is talented musician. but we all were once teens who wants be a better guitar player! He was 19 at time. It was great decision to come to Boston (studying at Berklee) to see what he needed...etc. He was already play blues really well. I can't share the details because it was "Private Lessons" but can't you see that John made a lot of efforts to be where he want to be? cont...
@RightOnBobbyD I wanted to say... many guitar players got a lot passion, talent.... but you got to plan to use those well. Otherwise, it stays "Just thinking" another big dream! Have your dream big, but be real... plan small plans first, make HUGE efforts than anybody. Get up early! That's good step! Get up 5am and do something...etc. Your day will be very productive and fun!
sounds awesome tomo... love your other vids too, great playing. if youre, like myself, are going for a bit cheaper guitar.. what do you think about the new Road worn tone?
It would be an honor to be taught by you! Also, can you please tell me how to get the distortion sound john mayer got on the 3rd section of where the light is? Such ass I don't trust my self solo, gravity solo, and the slow dancing solo. but anything is better than nothing. please respond.
when you say work on your blues and solid foundation, how do you approach this. Ive been playing blues for a wile now but i feel as though i keep playing the same lick over and over again.
First, listening. You need to spend listening very specific way. There are many sources for solid foundation. I can't just teach you over like this, but you know... triads, chord changes, intervals, ear training...etc. Practice building your foundation and practice your performance is different. Make sure you get my AYGP dvd for your fundamental.
Say, you got same guitar and same amp that John Mayer uses. But you want to figure out... how did he get that? A lot of trials and failures.... and blues! He went to Berklee when he was 19.... 2 semesters. but if he didn't get that experiences... I mean not only Berklee experience but he went out from his home! Simple way to say... Get a Strat & tube amp, listen to a lot of blues. B.B. King.... then work on fundamentals (make solid!), work on time, time, dynamics...Record yourself
Man I wanna play like that tomo, too bad I don't know where to start, I just stopped playing guitar because I have no money to get lessons. So smooth man, keep it up!!
That's not an excuse. Jimi had no fucking credit. I WANT YOU TO GRAB THAT FUCKING GUITAR AND START PLAYING. sTART PLAYING SONGS U LIKE , LEARNING CHORDS AND THEN SCALES , LATER GO TO IMPROV that's a way to start . make me proud lad..
@MrNebelful Everyday I do sir, I took lessons then had to cut it off due to being too poor. but yes I keep playing every single day, I will make you proud! =]
Don't worry about what you cannot do. You can play your guitar with your passion. If you want to get better, you want to practice.... You can have small goal instead of big one now.
Beautiful job, Tomo. You play just the way I would like to, so I'll be doing a lot of practicing. Just got a new Fender Strat Squier and I love the sound. One day I'll get that Blues Jr. amp - which model did you get?
Tomo, you kill this song. This is the hard version of Slow Dancing in a Burning Room! After learning Slow Dancing and the Two Rock version (and being able to figure them out by ear), I thought that I could tackle your version with ease -- not so much the case. Past 0:30, I can not figure out. You know.. a REAL guitarist would provide others with tabs ;)
First I thought I ruined his song! Good! Thanks for your kind words. Several students at Berklee... they are so good in JM style. I will post it soon. Actually John Mayer told me that he wants to see it too. He said.. Neon is Tomo song! I thought that was very cool to hear from him.

I play on a similar rig but dont quite have the same tight bottom end so i'm trying to figure out how much of it is in the JM Pickups
jlfoster3509 1 year ago
@jlfoster3509 I bought mine from one of my students so it's all stock black one. but I put vintage tubes.

i really want this guitar?
is it worth it?
i totally think it is, but i'd like to hear from someone that owns one =]
JoelBMusic 1 year ago
Thank you kindly.
lbul6 1 year ago
@lbul6 Thank you so much! I see more students (at Berklee) who wrap around thumb.. it's great to hold 6th string and play other strings with other fingers. but there is other way to use , place your thumb around the neck. So I suggest to you try both ways and do what you like and you don't have to show all you can do. Do both and understand both ways.

hi man since you are what I would consider a "real player" could you give me your opinion on if I should get the 70s vintage reissue strat or the mayer one? (or at least what you think each´s weaknesses and strengths are) maybe its a long question but had to ask anyways
And tips for not getting nervous live ha because i have trouble with that
MatiBtodo14 1 year ago
@MatiBtodo14 Even each model, you want to play it yourself. I don't know how you like it by your taste. I really want you to go check them out. Sure. Preparation. You should prepare as much as you can. When you perform, don't worry about what other think or mistakes. Enjoy!

i have a question...were you a professor at berklee when john mayer was there?? and if so how did his musicianship then compare to it now?
RightOnBobbyD 1 year ago
@RightOnBobbyD I get these questions all the time. Could you tell me why you have this question? More details please? Thanks.

@TomoFujitaMusic i am curious because i want to know how much you think he has grown as a musician. He is an unbekievabke musician, one of the best of in a very long time and, too be able to have taught him befire his fame would have been incredible
RightOnBobbyD 1 year ago
@RightOnBobbyD Thanks for writing. These are (your thoughts) very important to know. No doubt that John Mayer is talented musician. but we all were once teens who wants be a better guitar player! He was 19 at time. It was great decision to come to Boston (studying at Berklee) to see what he needed...etc. He was already play blues really well. I can't share the details because it was "Private Lessons" but can't you see that John made a lot of efforts to be where he want to be? cont...
TomoFujitaMusic 1 year ago
@RightOnBobbyD I wanted to say... many guitar players got a lot passion, talent.... but you got to plan to use those well. Otherwise, it stays "Just thinking" another big dream! Have your dream big, but be real... plan small plans first, make HUGE efforts than anybody. Get up early! That's good step! Get up 5am and do something...etc. Your day will be very productive and fun!

I have tried vitnage TS9, TS808... but I love TS10 the best. When John was recoding at Berklee... he was using his TS10.

when you say work on your blues and solid foundation, how do you approach this. Ive been playing blues for a wile now but i feel as though i keep playing the same lick over and over again.
tamasoops 2 years ago
First, listening. You need to spend listening very specific way. There are many sources for solid foundation. I can't just teach you over like this, but you know... triads, chord changes, intervals, ear training...etc. Practice building your foundation and practice your performance is different. Make sure you get my AYGP dvd for your fundamental.
Tomo

Great playing! Love the solo, so smooth!
What do you mean by AYGP?
Greetings! :-)

Can you tell me how John mayer gets his tone, or is that confidential?
OwensMusic1 2 years ago
Say, you got same guitar and same amp that John Mayer uses. But you want to figure out... how did he get that? A lot of trials and failures.... and blues! He went to Berklee when he was 19.... 2 semesters. but if he didn't get that experiences... I mean not only Berklee experience but he went out from his home! Simple way to say... Get a Strat & tube amp, listen to a lot of blues. B.B. King.... then work on fundamentals (make solid!), work on time, time, dynamics...Record yourself

MrNebelful 2 years ago
@MrNebelful Everyday I do sir, I took lessons then had to cut it off due to being too poor. but yes I keep playing every single day, I will make you proud! =]
Snifit 2 years ago
Don't worry about what you cannot do. You can play your guitar with your passion. If you want to get better, you want to practice.... You can have small goal instead of big one now.
Tomo

Beautiful job, Tomo. You play just the way I would like to, so I'll be doing a lot of practicing. Just got a new Fender Strat Squier and I love the sound. One day I'll get that Blues Jr. amp - which model did you get?
cruisinjude 2 years ago
Thanks. Then you want to work on your blues and solid foundation. Just practicing hours ... will not cut. I bought a used one from my student.

You've got the soul, keep on rocking!
theshmusic 2 years ago
First I thought I ruined his song! Good! Thanks for your kind words. Several students at Berklee... they are so good in JM style. I will post it soon. Actually John Mayer told me that he wants to see it too. He said.. Neon is Tomo song! I thought that was very cool to hear from him.
