  • you have such a beautiful voice. many blessings to you. may you always have peace. blessed be. jen lee

Chapeau!

  • magical

  • THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL...I LOVE LOREENA

  • love this song so much. so beautiful

  • Her voice is so beautiful .. :)

  • Loreena Mckennit sings of the old soul.

  • With such talent, you can be independent and call the shots, if you have talent, people will come to you. So many artists today lack talent and originality and have to be hyped up or do stupid things in the media to get any recognition.

  • Those 2 people who didn't like this wonderful song should go to an otorhinolaringologist.

  • The Music, "M" großgeschrieben, doesn't wear steak dresses.

  • Lovely.

  • I love Loreena. I love her music and what it stands for. But I am a little confused. Why are there no other musicians in the picture? The only other people I see in the video are at computers.

  • @lighthouscolor It's possible that the instrumentals were recorded prior and that this session was just to lay down the vocal tracks? (since it looks to me like it was done in a recording studio)

  • @springacres2 Yes, forgive me for doubting. It's just that so much of our lives is automated that it's easy to forget that music this complex is often composited from many componants. I have seen enough videos of her live performances to know she is a real live person and so is her backup. What an oasis from the bots. I hope to see her in person someday.

  • @lighthouscolor I saw her on one of her concerts in hannover (germany) a few years ago during summer and it was so inspiring. It was really a great feeling to see her live!

  • She sings in French? I do not understand but a very beautiful voice))I adore Loreenu)) EXELENT

  • Loreena is still master of this craft, simple, straight forward and with a delivery that none can rival. What a singer. Thank you for sharing.

A mystic harmony is hidden in this song...

  • I really love Loreena, I have a lot of her LP's and I went to see her in concert, but ...even though her voice is fantastic her french is very bad, I'm french and I only understand some words, what a pity !

  • @LEGOFFMARTINEAU It probably has to do a lot with her accent. Half the time I do not understand what a foreigner is saying in English because they have a way of pronouncing the words differently. It is probably much the same way.

  • @LEGOFFMARTINEAU also, now just realizing that you could be speaking about the song itself and not being able to understand the song's words it is because it is sung in an old dialect of french which is probably why you cannot understand it, if indeed you are talking about this one of my interpretations of your words

  • @DruidRobur The song is not very old and is very understandable for a modern French. But the pronunciation of Loreena is bad however her way of singing is very appropriate to this song.

  • @Maubuisson7052 She is singing in French???? It sounds like a dialect to me.

  • @Cecilitsa I believe in the notes it says the lyrics are 16th century french.

  • This is definitely French.

  • Oh, and I must say that musicmaker145's taste in music is no better than his/her ability to speak properly.

  • Loreena is the greatest singer on this earth...

  • @musicmaker145

I went and listened to the version you mentioned, and while there's something to be said for acapella singing, I don't find anything wrong with this recording.

  • @musicmaker145

Actaully, if you check, most of the choirs sing it at a much faster pace. Loreena slowed it down enough to allow the beauty of the melody to come through. The Anuna version is also a lovely rendition, I'm always open to different interpretations, as long as it fits the sense of the words and music.

  • great job!!! respect for old queen...

  • great job!!! long life old queen...

  • A música é bonita.

  • J'aime beaucoup cette chanson!

  • I don't care much for Loreena McKennitt, but I cannot deny that her voice is incredible. And she's not a show-offish type of woman when it comes to expressing her passion for singing, unlike a lot of women are nowadays. Good job, Loreena. Yet again you have astounded me with your raw, unmatched talent. ^^

  • In my opinion, she's the best singer. I'm very happy that she dosen't sing to rock or rap or any of that other junk! Classical and Celtic, the best types.

  • ..Loreena,You're such a GREAT singer and artist!

    1000 stars for you*******

    love

    SUN :)

  • My middle name is Noelle, so I love this song. I was supposed to be born on Christmas, but was born on the 14th (not a preemie, though). Beautiful song, music, voice, everything...it takes my breath away.

  • Une belle chanson de noel, traditionnelle oubliée. Merci :)

  • Maravillosa como siempre.

  • Admire this lady very much for putting the "independent" in "independent artist".

Not simply an artist of staggering talent and ability, but the owner/manager of her

own label, and her own studio, Quinlan Road. Loreena recorded her music on her terms, without being dictated to by

    anyone else.

  • @bookkeeper57

quinlan road is her label. She records in Peter Gabriel's studio.

  • @EricEns Oops sorry p

  • More of the same, how enchanting and lovely. And I agree, the studio setting is intriguing. It reminds me of how much we expect vocalists to remember lyrics without a score....

  • ¡Loreena es la mejor!

  • And by the way, it`s also very nice to see this studio insight, not many videoclips capture the recording sessions so naturally, for instance, the way she`s dressed: totally different from live performances.

  • If this song hypnotises me is because that constant E bass note throughout the whole piece. Apart from that she has an enchanting French accent. : )

  • This is so lovely...........

  • i just got this album and i love it..seeing her a few years back in hollywood perform was just amazing..i dont think anything can top that experience, her music has helped me through alot of tough times thus it means alot to me

  • tres bien madam

  • Quanto la amo!

  • What a wonderful woman, I hold her music in high regards : )

  • Wow, I've never heard her singing French. I know this is 16th century French, but... somehow it sounds really strange. Is it the Canadian pronounciation? I'm no native speaker, but I know that the French speak different French :)

  • I'm no expert in French languages, but I suspect that vowels have shifted over time.

An example: One of the major differences between Middle English and Modern English is the pronunciation of vowels. The word "he" in ME was pronounced like "hay", but the vowel shifted and it now sounds like "hee".

I don't know if that's what happened in the transition from Old French to Modern French, but I suspect that's why some of McKennitt's vowels sound different than Modern pronunciation: Vowel Shifts.

  • @jrlaker ahh but in part of aus, where I live, its still pronounced as hay

  • Being a native french speaker, i'd say that it sounds different because of both the old french (still very understandable, though) and her english accent. Canadians have a different accent when speaking French, but I really hear more of her english accent than french canadian there. Anyway, this sure is a lovely melting pot, very much in the unique style of LMcK, for a great song.

  • yaya hurdygurdy sound!

  • How Elegant!

  • I love Loreena!

  • Loreena is an uncommon artist, one of the few gifted people whose talent enables us to keep alive the dark and mystical connection to our distant past

  • Very nice comment, dude.

  • Her songs seem to last an eternity. When I thought the song was nearly to the end I saw it wasn't even half way. It's so wonderful. When I really listen I forget everything around me.

  • im singing this and choir and for us the lyrics are different:

here we sing of christmas, christmas comes a new, come devoted people say to god thank you, noel noevelet noel novelet noel chaen'ton e ci

    .....

  • we sang it in the st magnus cathedral for our school choir. it was incredible. with all the different parts and the organ it made me cry. so moving

  • Loreena's voice is what magic sounds like! Or what the soul would sound like if we heard it... or what angels and faeries and goddesses sound like! Such beauty in one human being must surely be a miracle! Loreena is my muse!

Blessings to you Loreena! You fill my life with joy unmatched!

  • Her french sounds like an old chivalric dialect, thats really mystic. Another beautiful song from Loreena!

  • I first saw Loreena on a PBS special ... what a unique voice she brings to each song. The instrumentation is also unique ....

  • Can anyone post the translation to this song?

  • Noel nouvelet, Noel chantons ici Devotes gens, crions a Dieu merci! Chantons Noel pour le Roi nouvelet,Noel! Noel nouvelet, Noel chantons ici! L'ange disait! pasteurs partez d'ici! Refrain
  • Thanks for posting the words.

What do they mean in English? Any idea?

  • Christmas comes anew, O let us sing Noel!

Glory to God! Now let your praises swell!

Sing we Noel for Christ, the newborn King, Noel!

Sing we Noel for Christ, the newborn King.

Christmas comes anew, O let us sing Noel!

Angels did say, "O shepherds come and see,

Born in Bethlehem, a blessed Lamb for thee.

  • ." Refrain

    In the manger bed, the shepherds found the Child;

Joseph was there, and Mother Mary mild. Refrain

Soon came the kings from following the star,

Bearing costly gifts from Eastern lands afar. Refrain

Brought to Him gold and incense of great price,

Then the stable bare resembled Paradise. Refrain

  • Beautiful! Thanks so much for the translation. I can now connect to both music AND words.

  • You're Welcome! I do love Loreena McKennitt very much too. :)

  • I hope they didn't use that awfuly distorting microphone for such a beautiful voice!

  • That voice is mesmerizing in any language. You're the best Loreena...

  • So true! Loreena is the BEST! I remember someone once telling me that Loreena could "sing the phone book" or about a piece of plastic and it would still be the most beautiful song! Her voice is that of a fairy! :D

  • The part about singing the phone book is a very good comparison. I agree ... totally. :)

  • A tremendous pleasure watching this video! I love your music for so many years now, and you never fail to amaze me. Thanks a lot, and Merry Christmas, Loreena :-)!

  • This was a nice video of Loreena in the Studio. I love the Studio surroundings that she is in. It's magnificient. I wouldn't mind being in their myself.

  • What a wonderful music piece. I love the fact she is using a recording studio as her surroundings. What a wonderful space it is! This got me into what the recording process is about. In anycase, I need to get this CD!

  • Very proud that Loreena sings an Old French song !

  • Thank you so much for this!!! It's brilliant!!!

  • I'm not ashamed to admit that I have this song on repeat on my iPod... And that is saying something, considering I work at a retail store that hounds us with "Holiday Cheer" and the music to follow before Christmas was even in the distant future...

Thanks for video - that smile, however fleeting, made my day brighter.

  • I'm searching for that smile

I Love this song and I know how to play it splendidly on the violin :)

  • Thank you Quinlan Road for posting another video from this recording!

This is a slightly different version than what is on the CD... but it's still an incredible song!
