With such talent, you can be independent and call the shots, if you have talent, people will come to you. So many artists today lack talent and originality and have to be hyped up or do stupid things in the media to get any recognition.
I love Loreena. I love her music and what it stands for. But I am a little confused. Why are there no other musicians in the picture? The only other people I see in the video are at computers.
@lighthouscolor It's possible that the instrumentals were recorded prior and that this session was just to lay down the vocal tracks? (since it looks to me like it was done in a recording studio)
@springacres2 Yes, forgive me for doubting. It's just that so much of our lives is automated that it's easy to forget that music this complex is often composited from many componants. I have seen enough videos of her live performances to know she is a real live person and so is her backup. What an oasis from the bots. I hope to see her in person someday.
@lighthouscolor I saw her on one of her concerts in hannover (germany) a few years ago during summer and it was so inspiring. It was really a great feeling to see her live!
I really love Loreena, I have a lot of her LP's and I went to see her in concert, but ...even though her voice is fantastic her french is very bad, I'm french and I only understand some words, what a pity !
@LEGOFFMARTINEAU It probably has to do a lot with her accent. Half the time I do not understand what a foreigner is saying in English because they have a way of pronouncing the words differently. It is probably much the same way.
@LEGOFFMARTINEAU also, now just realizing that you could be speaking about the song itself and not being able to understand the song's words it is because it is sung in an old dialect of french which is probably why you cannot understand it, if indeed you are talking about this one of my interpretations of your words
@DruidRobur The song is not very old and is very understandable for a modern French. But the pronunciation of Loreena is bad however her way of singing is very appropriate to this song.
@Cecilitsa Yes, it's French, but with a strong (British?) accent and the language is poetic and a bit old (16th). The beginning of the lyrics is: Noël nouvelet!
I went and listened to the version you mentioned, and while there's something to be said for acapella singing, I don't find anything wrong with this recording.
Actaully, if you check, most of the choirs sing it at a much faster pace. Loreena slowed it down enough to allow the beauty of the melody to come through. The Anuna version is also a lovely rendition, I'm always open to different interpretations, as long as it fits the sense of the words and music.
I don't care much for Loreena McKennitt, but I cannot deny that her voice is incredible. And she's not a show-offish type of woman when it comes to expressing her passion for singing, unlike a lot of women are nowadays. Good job, Loreena. Yet again you have astounded me with your raw, unmatched talent. ^^
In my opinion, she's the best singer. I'm very happy that she dosen't sing to rock or rap or any of that other junk! Classical and Celtic, the best types.
My middle name is Noelle, so I love this song. I was supposed to be born on Christmas, but was born on the 14th (not a preemie, though). Beautiful song, music, voice, everything...it takes my breath away.
More of the same, how enchanting and lovely. And I agree, the studio setting is intriguing. It reminds me of how much we expect vocalists to remember lyrics without a score....
And by the way, it`s also very nice to see this studio insight, not many videoclips capture the recording sessions so naturally, for instance, the way she`s dressed: totally different from live performances.
i just got this album and i love it..seeing her a few years back in hollywood perform was just amazing..i dont think anything can top that experience, her music has helped me through alot of tough times thus it means alot to me
Wow, I've never heard her singing French. I know this is 16th century French, but... somehow it sounds really strange. Is it the Canadian pronounciation? I'm no native speaker, but I know that the French speak different French :)
I'm no expert in French languages, but I suspect that vowels have shifted over time.
An example: One of the major differences between Middle English and Modern English is the pronunciation of vowels. The word "he" in ME was pronounced like "hay", but the vowel shifted and it now sounds like "hee".
I don't know if that's what happened in the transition from Old French to Modern French, but I suspect that's why some of McKennitt's vowels sound different than Modern pronunciation: Vowel Shifts.
Being a native french speaker, i'd say that it sounds different because of both the old french (still very understandable, though) and her english accent. Canadians have a different accent when speaking French, but I really hear more of her english accent than french canadian there. Anyway, this sure is a lovely melting pot, very much in the unique style of LMcK, for a great song.
Loreena is an uncommon artist, one of the few gifted people whose talent enables us to keep alive the dark and mystical connection to our distant past
Her songs seem to last an eternity. When I thought the song was nearly to the end I saw it wasn't even half way. It's so wonderful. When I really listen I forget everything around me.
Loreena's voice is what magic sounds like! Or what the soul would sound like if we heard it... or what angels and faeries and goddesses sound like! Such beauty in one human being must surely be a miracle! Loreena is my muse!
Blessings to you Loreena! You fill my life with joy unmatched!
Noel nouvelet, Noel chantons ici Devotes gens, crions a Dieu merci! Chantons Noel pour le Roi nouvelet,Noel! Noel nouvelet, Noel chantons ici! L'ange disait! pasteurs partez d'ici! Refrain
So true! Loreena is the BEST! I remember someone once telling me that Loreena could "sing the phone book" or about a piece of plastic and it would still be the most beautiful song! Her voice is that of a fairy! :D

Admire this lady very much for putting the "independent" in "independent artist".
Not simply an artist of staggering talent and ability, but the owner/manager of her
own label, and her own studio, Quinlan Road. Loreena recorded her music on her terms, without being dictated to by
anyone else.

Christmas comes anew, O let us sing Noel!
Glory to God! Now let your praises swell!
Sing we Noel for Christ, the newborn King, Noel!
Sing we Noel for Christ, the newborn King.
Christmas comes anew, O let us sing Noel!
Angels did say, "O shepherds come and see,
Born in Bethlehem, a blessed Lamb for thee.

." Refrain
In the manger bed, the shepherds found the Child;
Joseph was there, and Mother Mary mild. Refrain
Soon came the kings from following the star,
Bearing costly gifts from Eastern lands afar. Refrain
Brought to Him gold and incense of great price,
Then the stable bare resembled Paradise. Refrain
