I always wanted to go to DZ when I was a kid. Problem was the nearest one was in Louisville, Kentucky, which was about 90 miles away. We were better off just going to Six Flags and make it worth the trip.
Those accidents may include getting trampled, stuck, caught, or injured by the equipment, hanging or dangling from the equipment or being afraid to climb down from high places.
Discovery Zone closed down in the mid to late 1990s due to bankruptcy. Some people thought it wasn't really considered safe for kids anymore because there may have been times where kids might have had accidents while playing on the equipment.
I'm 18. I miss places like this. I never got to go to a Discovery Zone, but I do know a place with a GIANT playscape similar to this (that they don't allow people ages 13 and up to go into). There needs to to be a Discovery Zone for adults. Those places are AWESOME!!
I totally remenber that commercial, I even use to own that Nick Activity book. Which I remenber I got it before the first episodes of Rocko & Real Monster aired on Nick. Which were new cartoons back then. This commercial shows it's age since back then was when Nick started to have more of their own cartoons than the Canadian & UK cartoons they had before hand. But, yeah that place was the best thing to visit as a kid. I feel bad that kids today are growing up withouth a DZ.
I remember going to a DZ in the mall back in Virginia or Florida and remember crying when I saw that it closed down. :( If there was any way that I could reopen the places up, I would do it and get a few other people to help me when I get older. It'd be a bigger and better DZ with all this and much more. Chuck e Cheese is nothing compared to DZ.
I loved this place! Even though most of my trips there ended with a busted pair of glasses, busted lip, black eye once, hair caught in the roller slide, pushed by other kids, etc...
Good times..I'm 21 and would pay big bucks just for the privilege of running around in one of these one last time.
@aomtr333 That's what led to them shutting down-kids got hurt, parents sued, and Discovery Zone was sentenced to paying the families that much money that they didn't have the money to stay open.
I used to work for the Simi Valley Discovery Zone. It was a lot of fun working there. It was my first job. Also I met a beautiful woman who even came to my birthday.
I eventually found out she ended up becoming a Bimbo later on. Oh well.......
DZ was epic. i went with family a few times and once at a kids birthday. there was always some barf somewhere in the tunnels smelling terrible. we would find quarters in the bottoms of arcades. dirty but not as trashy as some of the old skating rinks i would go during the era
@Lunasakuramoon That's why you don't see playplaces like this very often anymore-kids got hurt, parents sued, the Discovery Zone had to pay a lot of money to the parents, and lost the necessary money to stay open. So they had to close.
Man I used to love this place, how cool things were back in the day!!!! The DZ in my neighborhood was turned into a furniture store...boring! I wish I had a time machine :/
I just nostalgia'd so hard. I remember my grandpa taking my sister and i to this one near me back in the mid 90's. I don't remember it that well because i was only like 4-5 at the time but i remember the slurpees and fun! i miss this place so much!
my old dz in nyc is now called "funtopia".... almost same shit... arcades laser and stuff but now it has bumper cars and bowling area... but the playground has been greatly reduced, and the huge tunnel area used to be the greatest part.... bring back DZ!
God I miss Discovery Zone! That mountain-climbing mat was epic! I loved flipping off the top of that thing! The games were alot of fun, but man oh MAN that ball pit and activity center was my place!!!
Part of the reason DZ closed was that Burger King and McDonalds started putting playgrounds in their restaurants, and parents weren't willing to pay to take their kids to DZ if the playgrounds at the other places were free.
I used to go there all the time when I was in kindergarten all through 4th grade! I had dreams about visiting a DZ deep in the forest, which was weird, and would always hang out with Looney Tunes characters, Sonic, Tails, Lemmings and the Ninja Turtles!
Beats the crap out of Suck E. Cheeses with its horrible creepy puppets, cardboard crap pizza and sexual pedophiles lurking at the edges of the ball pits. I wanted to mess up the machinery and make the puppets blow up or malfunction back then.
@XxGuardianKnightxX I love everything you said there, I feel just the same.x3 DZ is way better than Chuck E and all that rulez! Damn I miss my childhood.
@BJtheBassist dude! i love ball pits! im 17 and my friend and i found one playplace last week and it had a ball pit! we had to pay to play in it but we snuck in and jumped in it. i miss ball pits!
I used to go there with their ballpit, ballpit, and laser game that starts with MiB, and then Godzilla TAS, but it got teared down, and got replaced with a sh*tty Fitness Center, just like Romparound.

I only ever remember going here with my ex-stepmoms day care and because she was a super King Kamehameha Bitch, I was never allowed to do anything... Had to sit there and watch all the other kids having fun... I dispise that bitch still to this day...

@CrazyCheeseMagee yea you're about right bud, but unfortnately according to the health nazis it's considered a "germ pit" cuz and face it...those playplaces get pretty nasty, but if they had more places like that we'd have less obesity cuz they's actually moving around for once
@FullmetalninjaDR That's one thing I don't get. On the one hand, we want our kids not to be fat. On the other, we have a freakish obsession with keeping our children safe, so we coop them up in our houses in order to protect them from child abductors, and we get rid of games like dodge ball for supposedly promoting bullying. I say we let kids be kids again and let them scrape their knees, go on adventures, and maybe get into a bit of trouble.
@CrazyCheeseMagee yea well that's just the way things are these days, i can remember 12 years ago, I was 8....I didn't have time for videogames I was too busy running around in the woods, swimming, and doing dumb things that were fun at the time.....it was fun and my folks didn't stop me, it was being active
@FullmetalninjaDR Well, back then, I didn't really play video games, but I watched people play Pokemon all the time. I remember I read a lot of books, where I probably learned about 90% of the stuff I knew back then. I also went to the park and rode my bike and played Frisbee. Even today, I don't play a lot of video games, even though I've become a lot more interested in them. It's amazing what life was like before the internet became so popular.
@CrazyCheeseMagee indeed you are correct, I'm still running around today, unfortunately I have epilepsy so I can't drive, so I either gotta take the shoelace express or bike(my friend got put in prison so I have her bike full-time now) so I'm mostly fit, I wish I could run farther than I can now, but I learned to be active from an early and it's a habit that I will have to enforce on my kids when and if I decide to have them....and I believe all parents, should make kids be active no matter what
@FullmetalninjaDR Yes. I really should get The Dangerous Book for Boys, which has a long list of things that boys used to know, but apparently don't anymore because of technology. Also, each parent should consult it. I also swam for years in school, and I'm glad my college has an Olympic sized swimming pool. Also, I don't drive, and I never got a driver's license because where I'm from, no one drives; we take the subway and bus. (Unless they live in Staten Island or something.)
-crying- I MISS DISCOVERY ZONE SO MUCH! My favorite thing was those little rolly raimbow things that rolled and made noise when you walked across them and i miss the squishy mats. :( Fuck chuck e cheese!
Man, I remember Discovery Zone like yesterday. So many visits for parties and as special treats. I remember the games they held by DZ staff, one was to see who could eat their banana popsicles, i won some sort of prize. The world was changing so fast in the mid early-mid 1990's, but I only know of scaling DZ's sprawling mazes with my best friend, and climbing on to the outside of the tunnels slides and netting, getting bitched at by staff members and running back inside. Haha... :*(
hi guys i was born in 1998 so i gusse i was born when DZ was collpapsing but my older bro says they were really fun so can somone tell me about how DZ was and what it had?
@tutenkhamen19 If you're familiar w/ Chuck e' Cheese's, then DZ was almost similar to that but w/ cooler rides and stuff to do. Plus, I think you had to pay to get into DZ but that's how awesome it was ;D I havent been to Chuck E' Cheese's in forever so I dunno if you have to pay to get into those nowadays. But anyway! DZ was like an arcade and epic playground all under one roof. You could eat there, chill, play games and just have a blast til ur parents were tired and it was time to go home grr
LoL Yeah, that's why I said DZ was cooler and had more of an epic play area XD I grew up w/ Chuck E Cheese's first but when DZ came around, it was my new fave place to go! I wish it was still around LmAo
Me and my friends were about 11 years old (6th grade) in the mid 90s and it was THE ULTIMATE JUNGLE GYM (2 & 1/2 stories high!). You could crawl through a maze of tubes and go to: a ball pit, mountain climbing, climbing over nets that were hung at the ceiling, go through several slides. The maze was so BIG that kids could actually get LOST! There was also an arcade 3x bigger than Chuck E' Cheese's!
I remember wanting to go to this place when I was a kid. And I think I've only went 2 times after they closed down the one here because some kid suffocated in one of the playhouses.
I went to the DZ in Greece, NY when I was a kid. I stopped going there when some woman dragged me out of the ball area and tried to kidnap me. A couple of years later, DZ closed.
I remember this place the in door gerbil maze thing was so big i used to get lost in it and they also have laser tag and giant trampolines and a bunch of awesome other things they also had a zip line that i was scared to go on it was like jumping off of a building i still have video taps of birthday parties i had there that was the kewlest place ever if it was open I'd still go there even thou i'm a teenager lol i don't care
LOL, I looked at what the virus was in Wikipedia and it says its commonly transmitted from the rectal-oral route.
LOL, not surprising since so many kids were there and how many of them really wash their hands?!? I mean not even some adults do after using the bathroom.
That reminds me of so many rumors involved with that place! One of the many was that since the maze was SO BIG (2.5 stories high!), some kids would be lost in there and actually do bathroom business in there! LOL
@wxyzdetroit Yeah, I remember talking to this girl online who had a babysitter back in '95 or so who worked at DZ and used to bitch about ONE particular kid that ALWAYS peed down the slide and into the ball pit when he'd be there. I don't remember how she said they dealt with it; I think the family just stopped going there after a while.
This place was awesome when my sister and I were kids in the 90s. We always begged our parents to go there during the weekends and have parties, magic shows, arcades, and such. Good thing they brought a home video camera to record it all and we still have those tapes. I still have the WWF poster the employees gave out at participating places when you leave and it's still in good condition. Damn, I miss the good old days of the 90s.
Most DZ were closed at 1999 (on Wikpedia). I'm not sure if you would have appreciated at much being only one year old. You had to be at least 4-5 years old to really enjoy it.
Because of that, DZ is more of Generation Y experience.

@CrazyCheeseMagee indeed you are correct, I'm still running around today, unfortunately I have epilepsy so I can't drive, so I either gotta take the shoelace express or bike(my friend got put in prison so I have her bike full-time now) so I'm mostly fit, I wish I could run farther than I can now, but I learned to be active from an early and it's a habit that I will have to enforce on my kids when and if I decide to have them....and I believe all parents, should make kids be active no matter what
FullmetalninjaDR 1 year ago
@FullmetalninjaDR Yes. I really should get The Dangerous Book for Boys, which has a long list of things that boys used to know, but apparently don't anymore because of technology. Also, each parent should consult it. I also swam for years in school, and I'm glad my college has an Olympic sized swimming pool. Also, I don't drive, and I never got a driver's license because where I'm from, no one drives; we take the subway and bus. (Unless they live in Staten Island or something.)

Haha... :*(

hi guys i was born in 1998 so i gusse i was born when DZ was collpapsing but my older bro says they were really fun so can somone tell me about how DZ was and what it had?
tutenkhamen19 2 years ago
@tutenkhamen19 If you're familiar w/ Chuck e' Cheese's, then DZ was almost similar to that but w/ cooler rides and stuff to do. Plus, I think you had to pay to get into DZ but that's how awesome it was ;D I havent been to Chuck E' Cheese's in forever so I dunno if you have to pay to get into those nowadays. But anyway! DZ was like an arcade and epic playground all under one roof. You could eat there, chill, play games and just have a blast til ur parents were tired and it was time to go home grr
volpe3fuego 2 years ago
Chuckie Cheese's doesn't even come close to DZ! DZ is a zillion times better than ghetto ass chuckie e. cheeses lol!
bigweeniegenie14 2 years ago
LoL Yeah, that's why I said DZ was cooler and had more of an epic play area XD I grew up w/ Chuck E Cheese's first but when DZ came around, it was my new fave place to go! I wish it was still around LmAo
volpe3fuego 2 years ago
Me and my friends were about 11 years old (6th grade) in the mid 90s and it was THE ULTIMATE JUNGLE GYM (2 & 1/2 stories high!). You could crawl through a maze of tubes and go to: a ball pit, mountain climbing, climbing over nets that were hung at the ceiling, go through several slides. The maze was so BIG that kids could actually get LOST! There was also an arcade 3x bigger than Chuck E' Cheese's!
I feel bad for you guys who missed out!

I nostalgia'd so hard.
I remember wanting to go to this place when I was a kid. And I think I've only went 2 times after they closed down the one here because some kid suffocated in one of the playhouses.

I feel kinda bad, I don't remember these places at all.
I know that when I was a kid I loved them, and I still have a little bean bag with the logo from there, but I just have no memories at all.
Maybe I was just too young...

I went to the DZ in Greece, NY when I was a kid. I stopped going there when some woman dragged me out of the ball area and tried to kidnap me. A couple of years later, DZ closed.

I got Coxsackie Virus from this place that was the first and last time my mom took me there
kitcatgbabe92 2 years ago
LOL, I looked at what the virus was in Wikipedia and it says its commonly transmitted from the rectal-oral route.
LOL, not surprising since so many kids were there and how many of them really wash their hands?!? I mean not even some adults do after using the bathroom.
That reminds me of so many rumors involved with that place! One of the many was that since the maze was SO BIG (2.5 stories high!), some kids would be lost in there and actually do bathroom business in there! LOL
wxyzdetroit 2 years ago

:( That sucks.
TheElectricDreamer93 2 years ago
Most DZ were closed at 1999 (on Wikpedia). I'm not sure if you would have appreciated at much being only one year old. You had to be at least 4-5 years old to really enjoy it.
Because of that, DZ is more of Generation Y experience.
wxyzdetroit 2 years ago
They don't have cool places like this anymore. That's why kids these days are so fat. :(

Men in Black game was my favorite thing ever! Also met Deion Sanders and played with his kids at DZ.. Loved that place when I was a kid.
