Samhain is actually pronounced "sow win". It became a christian holiday when Pope Gregory I declared that the christians would create holidays on top of the pagan holidays and would also adopt most of the pagan customs that went along with it, but put a christian name and spin on it. Christmas is the same way, a pagan holiday that was "christianized".

@jc7622 Thank you, and it was a turnip that was given to Jack to light his way,people began to use pumpkins as they were bigger easier to carve.
