I think it's beautiful, and considering the age of the recording it is amazing. Von Karajan was just beginning to find his feet as the man he was to become, so ~ Bravo!
The CHANNEL Berlin Philarmonic notices sent ywo in my account letting my channel in bad condition for i have posted a symphony 7 and 9 COMPLETE with Karajan conduction ,
if they do not have this material not cet others because i´m puttig you send this to say they blocked me and that's how they return the love from fans
I thought Karajan'n Mozart symphony 40 would be more allegro and powerful and colorful, I was wrong. I do give my utmost love and respect to him more than any other conductors, but I was a little disappointed by his recital of this piece. I'm NOT interpreting nor doubting his conducting and greatness, but this Mozart symphony is so powerful and it should create a maelstrom in every corner of emotion one could have. This is one of my least favorite recitals from Karajan.
@deandusk I know he was, but his way of interpreting music should be the same, he's young means he's not as skillful as he mature, but i don't think his age was the factor for this piece to be boring and unimpressive. But I still love him no matter what though.
@contrymnon actually, ur wrong. the older you get the better of an understanding of music you get. therefore usually the older the conductor the better the music.
@contrymnon I agree, Karajan tended to slow the tempo too much on many pieces, especially later in his career, attempting to make them more "majestic" perhaps.
@contrymnon There are many of this work's performances available out there. You can try the 1976 DG recording with the Berliner for instance to get a more powerful one. He was a very fine specialist of the Mozart and Beethoven's repertoire. And they were composers he performed in very various ways.
@contrymnon this is the way mozart should be played imho. stronger and superpower plays are post-mozart romantic interpretations. Instead of following the mainstream that puts mozart on steroids Karajan reveal the real original essence of classical perfection
@fabianchatwin Lol... put Mozart on steroid... that's a good one! Anyway, I just feel like Karajan's Mozart 40 is too... 2D (i don't even know if that makes sense...). Although i don't like the classical era as much as romantic or baroque, but to me Mozart and his music is... grand, majestic, somewhat intimidating and leave one awe struck. But Karajan, as amazing as he is later onto his life, really disappointed me with his interpretation of this tremendous piece.
I don't know, but compared to the other performances I have heard here at youtube, it seems to me very powerful, very distinguished. A piece of its own. Maybe not what you expected, but something by its own...
It's kinda funny, reading all the similar attacks against the great conductors and interpreters of the 20th Century.Apparently they all have a personality cult or something. The reality of it smells like the effect of the current homogenizing agenda of the conservatories on the academic fanbois who suck every word from their professor's mouths as if it were the gift of life. All this theorizing would never create another conductor like Karajan. Have fun rearranging life to suit yourself though.
I give a shit. Your comments do more for classical music than the 10k "educated musicians" that post every day trying to bring this music down to the level of some ego bragging rights nonsense.
interpretations on something especially from the likes of a genius like mozart are so variable, because it's impossible for us to know what was going on in that genius head of his, that's the beauty of playing mozart, we get at least a really small insight of something we can never be. who are we to determine if it's "too fast" or "too slow"? that's just the wrong question. "is this mozart?" is the question we should be asking. i think karajan did it perfectly

Very brave afterwar perfomance from Nazi party member Karajan.
His ideals were defeated. (I think young Karajan really beleived in Hitler)
He thought himself defeated. But he played Mozart the same Karajan style that we love.
The sweetest Moz symphony in Karajan's hands becomes a piece of bitter Shostakovich - and returns to Mozart.
The Maestro is suffering the toughest time in his life...
Very exhortative...

"The same age as Amadeus". What does that even mean? As old as he was when he died? When he wrote this? He was more than 1 age during his life.

I wish we had a video to go with this. I would have loved to see The Master conduct Mozart's KV 550.
By the way, if we are collecting names for cults, put me down for the "von Karajan Cult."
