Hey guys...Google Duel and see for yourselves. The Pete was supposed to be 1956 281 and there were 4 or 5 for the movie. One is still running if they are not telling fibs!
There used to be a man in Eureka, CA with a '49 High mount Pete, with a two-six-bits in it. A single 6in straight pipe.I lived almost two miles away from the highway, but I could always tell when he left the last stoplight heading north. Sounded better then anything I have ever heard, including a KT600 with straights. The center drop manifold with the blower AND turbo really change the sound. Like ID'ing cars at night used to be.220,275, 335, or 400?
Hey, Where are you in Oregon? I'm an owner/ op. just down in Salem. I own an '84 COE Freightliner with a 3406B that's is SUPER reliable and I've been thinkin' about turnin' it up and doin' some other performance mods for better mileage, more power.
@Hotrodx199 actually, they used four different trucks, one for the TV cut and three others for extending the movie for theatrical release. The true original was a 1955 281 with a Cat, while the remaining one is a 1960 281 with a Small Cam 350 Cummins. and you're right about the hoods. The late forties-early fifties models looks thinner and the radiator is more rounded at the top.
@seasonedtoker Do your research dude they had at least 2 trucks for the movie... The one they dumped off the cliff obviously was turned into scrap metal but you can find the only surviving movie truck WITH the tank trailer on here.... check it out
@stingraystud That is incorrect first of all the truck from duel had a single straight up exhaust stack not a double bent, second the headlights are too high, that is a peterbilt 351
@Hotrodx199 You're right. In the time I have been driving so far I have had the chance to use Cat, Cummins, and Detroit. They are all great in their own right. I have found they all have good and bad points in pulling power, fuel economy, and durability. It's just my opinion but I think Cummins is the best all around engine, a Cat is the choice for heavy pulling, and Detroit is the best for fuel economy. The year of the motor has a big part with it too.
@Joe198969 12 valves do sound like air planes going down a road. They sound good until you get them past like 2100, then they get this high pitched bark.
What would an old Pete or Mack set me back, restored or unrestored? I got the fever for classic rigs after I bought my first diesel, a '92 Dodge W250 with a Cummins.
@philip21786 A Bonner, is what goes through your mind, when you visually see and hear something simultaneously, that is too exciting to put into words!
Music to the ears.....mate.....imagine that rig on a frosty morning going down hill on the Jake.... fully loaded.........Walmart's... Plastic Volvo's will never sound that good.......keep on trucking Bro..
yeah when a turbo probley adds 300 lol but yeah dont get me wrong defently a nasty truck and is awesome. im just not a supercharger guy but hey watever this truck is unique pretty much all diesels are turbos but this is unique and looks cool and thanks for up loading this video bro have a good day
@454sskilla It depends. In a truck application where you need instant boost and quick/controllable throttle response, a supercharger is better because the boost curve is flat from start to finish. Turbos, unless they are VGT style, still are a compromise when sizing them, and you have lag. I'd like to see a Lysholm Screw Compressor style supercharger on a Class 8 motor with a bypass; you get the great throttle response and low to no drag in bypass mode for the mpg.
@454sskilla Depends. Turbos are simple and cheap, and that alone made them universal on all diesels, but not necessarily the best option. Turbos take away hp in the form of backpressure in the exhaust system. Here's the best option; a Lysholm Screw supercharger. Look up the Kenne Bell unit used on Mustangs. A big compressor on a diesel will make the perfect truck engine; instant torque with no lag whatsoever, and with a bypass it'll get great mpg.
@mageac They make boost at 0 throttle because they use vane turbos and which at idle the vanes are closed up and helps it spool in place of a wastegate.
@Hotrodx199 VGT variable geometry turbocharger. I worked for Navistar when the DT365 was first released. They were the coolest sounding engines because you could hear turbo whine at idle.
Can't bypass a compressor with internal compression. Only way to get rid of the parasitic losses is to use an electromagnetic clutch. Mercedes used to use them on their 'Kompressor' engines (btw Kompressor is NOT the German equivalent of a 'blower' ie a roots!) but the superiority of the turbo rendered the set up obselete. No OEM uses the twin screw or the centrifugal superchager, and very few use the roots and then only where engine bay space precludes the use of turbos...
@nem427 There are some units available with an internal bypass, may have to talk to Magnuson about that one; also, the Roots blower that is used on the turbo 2 stroke Detroits bypasses as soon as turbo boost exceeds a certain pressure point. It can be done, just have to do the research.
Or read my post. I said that a roots is not a compressor, it's a blower. The boost is built up in the manifold, not in the rotor housing. The benefit is that bypassing is easy; the downside is that the compression is very inefficient. You're quite correct to point out that twin charging provides the best overal curve, but with much greater complexity. Frankly with VGT and twin scroll turbos being so good, the gain just isn't worth it.
Thank you. Yeah something happened with the fuel pressure guage or something and i guess it sprayed fuel inside so it didn't make it through the parade which is why it was parked there. I got video of it moving.
