Of course war at winter is more difficult to any army and Napoleon really lost a lot due to it but the battle of Kurskaya Duga were won not by the winter but by the Russian people. And Belorussian operation (Bagration) was done successfully in summertime. And Berlin was taken in spring. So Russian winter is mighty but Red Army was too.

@blaszczko The total amount of Russian losses in WWII is about 27 million people (including war casualties, killed in action, dead of wounds, civilians killed by enemy, dead of hunger and illnesses and other causes). Of course winter is guilty for some of those deaths. At Stalingrad the losses were almost equal for USSR and the enemy.
Polish pride is well known, but I'm pretty sure Russians didn't care much about getting a Polish cannon or Polish ulan hat. We had our own in due quantity ;)

As the Moscow peace treaty stated, Finland lost Gulf of Finland islands, Karelian Isthmus, Ladoga Karelia, Salla, and Rybachy Peninsula permanently, and had to rent Hanko Island to the Soviet Union. Those were exactly the goals of the USSR during that war. So I'd call that a victory:)

@PROkiller16 It seems Russian Winter didn't have much effect on Russians themselves, if they still could fight while Germans froze to death. Of course war at winter is more difficult to any army and Napoleon really lost a lot due to it but the battle of Kurskaya Duga were won not by the winter but by the Russian people. And Belorussian operation (Bagration) was done successfully in summertime. And Berlin was taken in spring. So Russian winter is mighty but Red Army was too.

@memmori1 - till today Russians didnt tell how big loses they suffered during winter offensive. its only known, that they were much bigger than in Stalingrad, so... and about Napoleon Army in Russia - Polish forces didnt leave there a single cannon in Russia. when one ulan lost a hat /tchako/ in combat whole squadron had to charge to get it back cos /from soldier's dairy/ "they had no right to get our equipment"

@blaszczko The total amount of Russian losses in WWII is about 27 million people (including war casualties, killed in action, dead of wounds, civilians killed by enemy, dead of hunger and illnesses and other causes). Of course winter is guilty for some of those deaths. At Stalingrad the losses were almost equal for USSR and the enemy.
Polish pride is well known, but I'm pretty sure Russians didn't care much about getting a Polish cannon or Polish ulan hat. We had our own in due quantity ;)

Now to the point. As the Moscow peace treaty stated, Finland lost Gulf of Finland islands, Karelian Isthmus, Ladoga Karelia, Salla, and Rybachy Peninsula permanently, and had to rent Hanko Island to the Soviet Union. Those were exactly the goals of the USSR during that war. So I'd call that a victory:)

@Elennril Well, they weren't really the invincible, they were more undertrained and bad resourced. Only exception of course was at the end of WO II and during Cold War, there, they finally showed their real potential, if they only were better trained.. it would've make so much difference.

First Nazis attacked and slaughtered them then Russians libereted and slaughtered the rest. My Grandmother never told a word of lie in her life, so I have no reason to doubt her words. About Croatians: do you support the Ustaše movement? Volonteers (if there were any) may do what they wish, we never sent them officially. Mercenaries from many countries took part in that war.
I don't believe in 50 villages burnt by Russian volonteers. It is absurd.
And about teaching history in Croatia, I see you as example of it. I haven't heard so much nonsence for years. Nothing personal but you have to learn more.

Stjepan Radic was a nationalist who tried to oppose Serbian hegemony but was assassinated by a Montenegro man, one Puniša Račić (who later was OK under Nazi occupation but was executed by Communists).

However, Solzhenitsyn and his book are not a true source.
In 1930-1950 (till Stalin's death) there were about 10 millions of people who went through those camps (not all of them died because USSR never used the death camps equivalent to German). There could be only 2,5-3 million imprisoned in all camps at the same time.

Not everyone imprisoned there died; no everyone imprisoned there was sent to camp because of political or ideological reasons - there were thousands of criminals, thiefs and murderers too. Don't think all of them were pure saints, 'cos they were not.
