I learned to drive when I was 8 in a KW T600 with a 3406E model CAT under the hood. I'm 22 now, and proud to say I drive a truck. I think when I'm on my deathbed someday, the only regret I will have is not driving more. Love this song, and love my job!
my old man drove truck till the day he died in 2006.........ill always remember listening to this song in his truck growing up on day i went to work with him.....love ya pops and and hope your still shifting gears up there in heaven!
Song just hit's my heart, and I am spending the rest of my life with the one that I love, except my truck had 26 wheels and 3 trailers!!! O well it's still the same thing, I just wiggled a lot more than everyone else!!!
I am 37 and my daddy has been driving ever since I can remember and now i am in love with a trucker who is saving to retire off the road. Its a hard lonely life, so they really need to have someone in their lives who gets it.
Heard this song this morning on the all night radio station. It reminded of how much I liked hearing it. I hope she sold a million copies of this song for all the millions of miles driven by over the road truckers in America. We should never forget the work of artists like Kathy Mattea and Mary Chapin Carpenter etc. It's American country at it's best.
My husband and I drove truck for many a year,on Oct while we were home he lay his head in my lap and never woke up,We started each morning on the road with this song,it was our UP and Running song So thanks Kathy.
@bookworm3449 I am so sorry to here about your husband's passing. My daddy drove for 30 years taking care of me and my mama; worked when he should have been at home in bed. I hope your fond memories will help to ease your broken heart and "may God ride with you" always.

This is a good song if ur a trucker or family of a. Trucker my dad drove for 30 years passed away a year ago this makes me cry ....for all the truckers keep on a truckin
if Hindsight would have been know, Kathy sang one of the most reconisable song in the trucking buisness dosent matter if you listen to rock, rap or country, chances are you have heard this song!
This reminds me of my Dad and all of my other family that drove truck, some have quit including my Dad but for all the ones still out there, KEEP ON TRUCKIN!!
Lots of great stories of families who sacraficed their loved one..mostly Father, to being a truck driver. We take it all for granted. Without the truckers...well there would not have been food and supplies in some parts of this country. God Bless All Of You! God bless America too!
This song is a classic, my daddy drove a truck my whole life, ended up dying from complications from an accident, I hadn't seen him in 10 years....never spoke to him again before it happened and I had spent those 10 years looking up at every truck I passed wondering if I'd see him....He's retired, RIP, song makes me think of him....=)
This song is close to me. My Dad drove 40 years, gone about 3-4 days at a time. One accident. Then he retired and was going to have a good life. Summer in the midwest, winter in Florida, visit the grand kids, make up for all those weekends and holidays he missed with his family. He died two years later. Life is not fair.
@katiejdr567 I learned at a very young age that everyone I know and love is going to die. I don't mean to sound cold but it is a fact !! Dying in your 60's isn't that tragic. Burying children is tragic, watching my young cousins kids cry at her funeral was tragic. I had a friend who's 2 year old was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Luckily the doctors were wrong, the chemo killed the cancer and she is a healthy 14 year old.
I come from a trucking family too, and am following in the footsteps, even though I'm a woman. I hope you find comfort in the fact that your dad did what he loved to do for all those years. It's in the blood.
Seen sun rises and sun sets that are incredible. Have driven millions of miles and met a lot of good hearted folk in my travels across this land of ours. I have seen changes, some good and some not so good but this song allows me to keep it in perspective. Thank You Ms. Mattea for your song, may be I will see you on the road one fine day and buy you a cup of coffee. Grave Digger
@6789out life here has many let downs.. but thankfully there is Jesus who promised us Heaven if we only believe.. cant wait to get there and be with my dad again..
This beautiful song has such special and strong meaning. My uncle drove a truck for over 30 years, and this song has always made me think of him and my aunt. We wish they were still here. What a shining example of true and real love. Always, in loving memory.
Every day I thank God for my amazing Husband & our real and true Love, and cherish every moment Together.
Im not a truck driver but I spend over 50,000 miles a year driving the roads of Texas, and sometimes Louisiana. I also drove a cab for 2 years. I am only 34 years old, but I know this song has to touch a lot of people. I have met a lot of hard working truckers over the years, and they have a job that is a lot tougher then most people can imagine. The dangerous miles spent on the highways is just the beginning. Thank you guys and gals for all you do!
I am a truck driver I'm out 3 to 4 weeks at a time. Before i ever go home to see my wife and 9 kids so the song really means a lot to me. For all of you that are thinking about becoming a truck driver don't very little money in it and it's hard on you and your family
My dad has been a truck driver for nearly 30 years,I remember as a kid ,he was gone alot,I sometimes even resented him being gone,as sometimes he even missed thanksgiving and christmas, with us.but as a Grown man,I understand the sacrifice that we have to do to survive.I respect all truckers,I myself thought I might give trucking a try,But I dont like sitting for hours at a time,I go crazy over about 4 hours in a vehicle, lol the stories my dad has , make you laugh and cry,
I will never forget the first time I saw this video....Me and My Daddy were sitting in the living room and I remember him saying "She got her a hit song with this one" and she did...and now that Daddy has passed away I love to listen to his favorites and reminess.... Great song Kathy..... Thanks...

I always dreamed of being a long haul truck driver. But the dream his lost it's luster for me as our big brother government has created so much red tape and regulations a truck driver has to go through is sickening. Plus the cost of diesel fuel these days is ass rape at the pumps. I don't know how all you drivers do it these days. God Bless you all.
going back on the road tomorrow. took some leave and ive been home for 3 months now. i thought, at one point, that i hated life on the road. now its all i want... funny how that works. im looking forward to it :)
Truckers usually have a Docorate degree in whatever the heck we are talking about, but almost eveyone one the road has heard and can relate to this song and video, There are a lot of personal sacrifices that almost everyone endures on the road, and it is nice to see that the spouses of truckers post comments on this video, letting the youtube word know how much they miss their loved ones and the contribution to society, even if society view us as just truckers.
I cannot wait until the day that my love never has to go away again. I cry each time I hear this song. I graduate in June 2012 with my BA in health and human services, as soon as I get a job he will never have to go away again.
My late husband & i used to drive trucks & boy does this bring back the memories. Now i'm on disability & don't get to drive these rigs any more. Brings tears to my eyes when i play some of these songs. Good ol' days are gone. Sure do miss it :(
One day, about 15 years ago, I was at the Mayo Clinic with a friend who was getting some tests done. We were in line at some shop at the complex there & I turned around & I swore there was Kathy Mattea. I wanted to ask for an autograph, but my friends said, no way was it Kathy, The next night on the Johnny Carson show (some late night talk show anyway) she was on & she said she wanted to thank the doctors & nurses at the Mayo Clinic for taking care of her father (I think it was her father)-dang!
I used to drive truck, 20 years ago... gave it up, but Ive really loved this song since the day it came out. Brings a tear to me eye every time. Its just so genuine. Feels like life, hard work, and love, all wrapped up into one. Thanks Kathy.
This song brings tear to my eyes my grandpa that raised me was a trucker and just befor he retired the one that he loved my grandma passed away.....I miss you mamal....:(
I love this song. I got my CDL and tried being a driver for awhile, but it didnt work out. God bless all the truckers out there. You guys and gals keep America going.
This is a great song and always makes me lonely for home =( I only got 18years of hauling steel behind the big wheel but its still the same thing......you always look forward to those last few miles coming home even if you have to go back out.I only wish they'd of used a real American Truck....a Pete,KW,Freight shaker or even a Mack.
driving for 13 years and missing my babies everyday representing th772 fruithauler till the day i die never will forget the great times the friends and the dirt roads i love and miss my florida
may dad after 30yrs of driven truck just hang up the keys i no its my turn maybe one dad may own kid will take may place its how the world turns round mr B
My wife comes from a family a truckers. At four she had this song memorized and would sing it all the time, and still does. She jokes that she had country songs memorized before she had her ABC's.
Yes the Msvericks still exist out their in the music world and here is one song that they don't play much as it could. I like the steel guitar in this song too.
I love this song and I wish Kathy would do a special version just for us truckers driving those big Roadtrains in Australia. change the words to 18 gears as that is our main Fuller Eaton gearbox layout. thanks for the posting. Keep on trucking..
This is one song. one reason I still miss driving those semis. I drove for 22 years, but, due to medical reasons had too quit. God I miss that Freightliner. HONK!!!
I've got 17 of the 30 years Charlie's got, but I don't know if retirement is on the horizon. I used to say I'd never stay in trucking long enough to become a veteran driver, but unless I find some other career, I'll probably be on the road for many more years. I love Kathy Mattea. Why is she not making music anymore?
My husband is a trucker and the day he retires he will bring those 18 wheels home and a dozen roses. A promise I know he will keep. Be safe out there honey so you come home to me.
Truckers keep the world goin and deserve all the respect you have to offer. Cut em some slack if some come off as grumpy what can you expect drivin non stop away from your family and friends.
Ya know it sucks that truckers don't get the respect they deserve!! They are really having a hard time now with gas prices and we should be more grateful!!
this song was played at my grandpa's funeral and every time i hear it it makes my heart melt i miss u grandpa and i know u are watching me....... thank you
i dedicate this video to my brother Robert Lee Walden, who was a trucker for ove 40 yrs of his short life. He died just six weeks after coming home to us. And it is also for my love,Vic, whom I am looking forward to seeing retiring this year and " setting out to find America' with. I love you !
kathy thanks for doing this song it makes alot of sence to me because i can relate to this truckers wife and how she feels .my old man is a trucker and i count the time before i get to see him again. There is alot of worrieing i do while he is out there on the road. But I know he loves doing his job and he feels he helps others out by having his job. Once agin thank you for this awsome song .
Kathy Mattea had many great songs, among them are "Walking Away A Winner," "Nobody's Gonna Rain On Our Parade," "455 Rocket," (her last big hit) and this unforgettable gem from the 1980's. In all honesty, I don't think one needs to drive a truck to enjoy this song. I used to love listening to it on my car radio. Thanks Kathy for doing this, and please, please do more songs like this one!!!!
Kathy, thanks for keeping it real all these years. I loved your performances in the Transatlantic Sessions with my own countrymen Dick Gaughan and Dougie McLean. Wishing you all the best and thank you for all of the work you have done for others. You will always be a Star . Paul from a fairly freezing and snowy Scotland .
She appeared at the opening of my club in San Antonio in 1988. That year she won the AMA award I think it was for best record or Female best song...but anyway she was amazing....! This song was perfect for her and she was as sweet and down to earth as one could be . Never got the attention she deserved but to me she was a 'SUPERSTAR'. ! ! ! Wonder if she's still performing...
when i was a little girl, it seemed like this song came on the radio every single night right as i was falling asleep. i never was one for country, but recently i guess my roots have been calling, and i've been listening to a LOT of it... and this song really gets me. it reminds me of the way mom smelled when she came home from work, being a kid... you know. aw crap, i'm getting all worked up!
Hi Youtube people, i want to say hi and how are u right now i miss my boyfriend he is a truck driver i see him on the weekends and he allways love me he said i got a great girlfriend and love him with all my heart i text him and he text back right now he is in texa he had a ? for me last weekend and i said whats yr ? he said close yr eyes and i did and he got one knee and he said now u can open he said will u married me i started to cry and i said yes if my boyfriend out there i love u

Thank You Kathy, saw you Sunday night. The next time you are in Alaska, I will be their, too.Love ya. Thanks for your playlist and autograph. You are AWESOME FUNNY and have a great personality. Thanks again
This song never gets old! Never fails to get me emotional no matter how many times I've heard it before. Kathy has written one of the best country truck driving songs of all time! Here's to all the Charlies out there, wherever they may be. They keep America moving. Share the road!
my husband is truck driver and i miss him lot he on the road lot and our babys due soon and i am scary he make miss twin birth and i have gave up my rich to with my husband and i met him was truck driver and me and him 6 kids together and me and him been 10 year now and my folks don't accept my husband and my folks thought he was no good for me and he was truck drive and me and I get nothing my folks and i have good with my husband and i choose him over my folks
I'd like to dedicate this wonderful Video, and thank you who ever put it on, to my Great Friend who passed on 9/27/10 at 9:00am. Million Plus miles. Owner Operator. Cancer beat him. He fought it 12 years! RIP Ernie. Out of Vancouver, Washington. I saw so many miles of beautifull country with him. I named my little dog Bert, which fit him well in spite of Ernies name..You guys all be safe. Any unusual back pain. Please have it checked..Lung Cancer got my guy. Thanks. Be safe!
When i heard this song years ago i knew it was going to be big......still one of my favs.....everything a country song should be....better than the country music today
Gotta leave a special comment on this one, the guy who is playing acoustic on this track and many of Kathy's other songs is from my hometown of Pocahontas, AR, Robert Bowlin, definitely a class act, and a hell of a guitar player. Just had to share that.
I didn't work driving a truck but I worked for forty years on the railroad. I thought of this song as I was driving home from work for the last time when I retired.
This song makes me think of my family because I have so many people in my family that drive Truck. My Father in law just retired last year after 50 of being on the road he is now at home and him and my mother in law have been together since he retired. My dad has been driving since I was little and so has my step mom . I cant wait for the day that they both retire and can play with the grand kids. Kathy this is the song that means the world to me. Thank you.
Now *this* is country music! Everytime my husband and I are on the road driving next to trucks, it makes me think of songs like this and how every trucker has a story somewhere. Love this video.
@crazysexymama76 Very sorry to hear about your loss. Thanks for sharing. All of my grandparents, parents, and some siblings are gone as well. It is painful, but fun to remember all the greats times to keep them alive in our hearts. Great song by Kathy

Big Ben, just kick up your cowboy boots, and let the politicians take the wheel.
Eighteen wheels and a dozen roses
Ten more miles on his four day run
A few more songs from the all night radio
Then he'll spend the rest of his life
With the one that he loves----

One day, about 15 years ago, I was at the Mayo Clinic with a friend who was getting some tests done. We were in line at some shop at the complex there & I turned around & I swore there was Kathy Mattea. I wanted to ask for an autograph, but my friends said, no way was it Kathy, The next night on the Johnny Carson show (some late night talk show anyway) she was on & she said she wanted to thank the doctors & nurses at the Mayo Clinic for taking care of her father (I think it was her father)-dang!

I've got 17 of the 30 years Charlie's got, but I don't know if retirement is on the horizon. I used to say I'd never stay in trucking long enough to become a veteran driver, but unless I find some other career, I'll probably be on the road for many more years. I love Kathy Mattea. Why is she not making music anymore?

kathy thanks for doing this song it makes alot of sence to me because i can relate to this truckers wife and how she feels .my old man is a trucker and i count the time before i get to see him again.

Gotta leave a special comment on this one, the guy who is playing acoustic on this track and many of Kathy's other songs is from my hometown of Pocahontas, AR, Robert Bowlin, definitely a class act, and a hell of a guitar player. Just had to share that.

My Father in law just retired last year after 50 of being on the road he is now at home and him and my mother in law have been together since he retired.
