A 12 gauge, short barreled shot gun is best for home defense, I prefer Winchester, but Remmington makes a very nice firearm also. Assult rifles are very nice, but with your crappy laws in California, they are hardly worth it. If you do go for an assult rifle, DPMS Panther is your best bang for the money, or if you have deep pockets then Colt makes a great AR-15.
