Detroit is only 3 hours away from me in Columbus and this got good airplay in Columbus. I loved it. The next one he got released as a single was the awesome anti Vietnam war song "2+2=" which also was big down here as the anti war movement at Ohio State was getting big.
I haven't heard this song since the 60's. Oh my God. It's making me ready and willing!! OMG I LOVE this. I will be playing it over and over. Oh yeah, it's a hot one alright. And so am I!! lol
My favourite rocker from Bob Seger - always gets me moving! So full of energy & life, you can't sit still when this song comes on! I couldn't in the 60s and I still can't in 2011 - timeless music!
This song really defines Michigan music. A friend's mom was Punch Andrew's cousin and we got to visit with the band at some kid matinee at Daniel's Den in Saginaw. That was a big deal for a 13 - 14 year old.

a timeless recording of the power of detroit rock! a fabled time of legend and wonder that only the few us who were actually there can share and understand.
I remember following Seger from the Clawson Hideout to Silverbell and back in 66/67. From The Last Heard through the System, he was our favorite act. This was his best song, earlier period or late.
just for everyone's information this song was one of the 1st songs released from hideout records for Bob but there was some kind of depute so hideout release this song ( listen real close ) with my good friend Dick Fidge singing the sound track - Dick was in the group "The Sunday Funnies" which later got signed by RareEarth records under Motown - Sunday Funnies put out 2 abu, in Detroitms - 1st one was recorded at famous HitsVille recording studio on Grand Boulevard in Detroit
@hotstar900 Fidge did a great version. If you never heard the original you wouldn't think it could be bettered. But if you HAD heard the original ... DAMN. He had to have guts just for covering it.
saw Bob at University of Windsor when he was with Teegarten and Vanwinkle. Living in Windsor, and Detroit influence, this Heavy Music has always been my favorite....remember blowing speakers out of a car with the volume and bass....touring down the road...like yesterday...will certainly be looking for his schedule with his new tours.Classic!!! Will never die
My favorite Seger song, maybe because it was my first exposure to him. Those of us from the Ann Arbor area know where he was raised, went to school, and formed his first band, it wasn't Detroit. A fond memory I have of Bob is early but after Heavy Music, and his Tales of Lucy Blue album which we all loved. A friend and I walked in to a bar a block west of Main in downtown Ann Arbor one afternoon to grab a beer, low and behold there's Bob playing with his band, broad daylight, no cover.
right on! i grew up in detroit when he was playing in garage bands and basement bands playing at my brother's high school dances. i'm 54 and listening to it right now!!!!
whats better then good ole detroit rock?!!!!! long live the stooges,MC5,alice cooper, the frost, the amboy dukes, frigid pink, src, the third power, and of course bob seger!!!!!!!! blue collar rock!
My father had this album but I can't seem to find it. I have looked online for this version of the song and cannot find it on iTunes or Amazon. I have a version of the song off his "Live Bullet" album but it is not this version. Any recommendations on where I can find a digital version of this song to download?
I moved to Denver in 1976 and took Live Bullet with me. When I put it on the turntable and cranked it up, the Colorado kids acted as though they had died and went to heaven. Nobody knew of Seger west of the Mississippi in 1976.
I always thought the reason for his calculated decline was just a career move. Nobody ever lost a dollar underestimating the public tastes. That's harsh, but I always figured there must have been a reason why his music dropped in quality just as he was becoming popular. I still have a copy of Mongrel in my vehicle that sees regular rotation. Never bought his later material, though I don't find it offensive any more than elevator music.
Seger played in the Bay City/Saginaw area several times, and I saw him when I was 18 (1973) at the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena. Styx opened for Seger and we couldn't wait for them to get off the stage so Seger could come on! Seger put on an awesome show in that venue for a couple thousand people. Very memorable!
@sksepulv By "Saginaw Bay Ice Arena," are you referring to Wendler Arena of the Saginaw Civic Center? I saw lots of concerts there, but I never saw Seger, unfortunately.
@gogomountain : No, not Wendler Arena. The ice arena I'm referring to is on Bay Rd. in Kochville Twp. out by SVSU. It is used for youth hockey leagues, primarily. Are you from Saginaw? :-)
There's apparently some nastiness between Bob and the guys in the band from the time. There's some details in the Wikipedia Seger entry. AS much as I don't put 100% credence in Wikpedia...it sounds plausible to me.
Yeah im56 and from Grand Rapids and use to catch Bob and Ted Nugeent Dick Wagner and the Frost and the Stooges and MC5 ...man that as a era for Michigan music for sure!
too bad Seger sucked after this era,IMHO...I saw the Bob Seger System at Chippewa Lake, Ohio @1968 do this song (WIXY Appreciation Day, along with 5 other bands)...MAN did they sound trashy live back then !!!
it was DOC NEMO that played this in the opener...then into Paul Butterfield/One More Heartache...EXCELLENT memories from those late night FM shows back then in Cleveland !!!
2+2, Ramblin' Gamblin' Man and Heavy Music are his three greatest songs. He made Detroit rock in the 1960's along with the Amboy Dukes, MC5, SRC, Rationals and the like. Detroit was a great place then and it is too bad that its reputation today is so poor. It was a better place then and was one of the great cities in the US.
STILL is GREAT---the Detroit '60's bands were the BEST---Seger, Terry Knight, The Underdogs and their "Friday At The Hideout" song, Amboy Dukes, on and on!
