I think the "stay in the chair" part is overlooked. Even adults, or people with no taste for marshmallow,s might fidget or pick up the marshmallow because they are not allowed to move. "were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers)" I suspect there could be a placebo effect working on the adults.

@TheTCCase Naw, there's a pretty good case that the skills needed to delay gratification in this kind of experiment predict success later in life to a certain extent. Honestly it's pretty easy to see why. Delaying gratification is an important life skill that translates to much more than food. It's the kind of thing that helps you do your schoolwork and stay in shape rather than immediately gratifying yourself with something like checking facebook or youtube over and over.

If you tested me in this experiment... When you would return in 5 minutes to see my progress... you would see bite marks in the chair, the table is torn to pieces spread around the ground. I am using one of the metal legs to carve pictures of the marshmallow on the wall. The Marshmallow would have blood painted onto it that looks like a small face and I would be talking to it calling it Puff Puff.
