WHY is von Karajan always the default conductor for any classical music in a movie? there are stronger performances than this with Anne-Sophie Mutter they could have used for their end credits music.
Outstanding conclusion to any film, pure class! Film was exceptional, one of the great classics of the last quarter century, seen it over and over, sits proudly in my collection, exceptional!
To be honest.. Plainview was'nt the monster i thought he was going to be in the movie..I would have done that to Eli too lol he was pretending to be a prophet and daniel was the only person who could see through it..
@IAmRodyle "If I ever wind up murdering someone I truly despise from the bottom of my heart, I will immediately play this music afterward." ...I would immediately I don't know, scape of the country... or drive away, or get rid of the body and then play this music... But that's like just the way I like my priorities set.
@jasper2008ify He was never a caring man. He only saw HW as a source of added income for his company, he was misanthropic. He was only concerned with money, and any way to get it. He saw people as stepping stones to get to money, and once he stepped on them, he discarded them. To him, HW had overstayed his welcome as a stepping stone and he got rid of him by saying what he said. Eli had done the same, but also was arrogant enough to assume he would help him. Daniel is the modern businessman.
i actually knew this concerto before, and found out just now that it appeared in this movie. somehow, i am bummed, although i shouldn't because it made people aware of the concerto.
@jasper2008ify i could not agree more with your statement my friend, peoples attention to detail in stories these days is sad, thanks alot "scary movie" series i hate you
@jasper2008ify Oh no, that's not it at all. Some of my favorite movies contain barely any action. I do enjoy action movies as well, but no number of explosions could have saved the Transformers franchise. The reason I didn't like this movie is that I didn't like and couldn't relate to any of the characters. I also thought the dialogue was kind of half-baked. And so, to copy your format: Please go back to watching shitty movies and leave the film judging to those pursuing an actual degree in it.
@chicoramero I'd say you are very biased and you would make a shitty reviewer. I can't actually relate to being a medival knight or a samurai but a movie isn't determined by how the characters relate to me. That sounds very egocentric. I'd like to review your short films and tell you how terrible those are. It doesn't take a degree or course of study to realize if a movie was good to your or not. Your opinion does not matter to the world.
DRAINAGE! Drainage, Eli, my boy! If you have a milkshake. And, I have a milkshake. And I have a straw that reaches across the room and starts to drink your milkshake. I drink your MILKSHAKE! SLURP*
@Scar231 I don't think he hates people. If that was the case, then why does he have 2 bowling alleys in his basement?
He's just alone because he can't trust anyone after the incident with Henry. In the end, he even sees his son (that is, if you want to believe it, adopted) as an enemy.
@hkpopfan4lif3 It wasn't just the concerto; Jonny Greenwood used the piece "Convergence" in the scene with the oil derrick fire, music he wrote for an earlier film, Bodysong. In addition, the opening theme uses sections from a piece he wrote for the BBC Concert Orchestra called "Popcorn Superhet Receiver". It was a crime he wasn't nominated, though; the soundtrack to There Will Be Blood is a landmark achievement.
its sad that this movie came out the same year that No Country did.it deserved more.and since then there s no movie that even got close to these two...
One of the best movie endings EVER!! Eli gets what he deserves and Daniel says three simple words that are so loaded with different meaning: "I'm finished!" What a classic film for the modern time, this one will be reflected on for many years to come!
@freakozola21 Not exactly. He didn't lose everything, just everyone. And he makes it quite clear throughout the course of the movie that nothing would make him happier. To him, people are but a means of acquiring wealth, otherwise he can't stand them. He wants to get rich so he can live the rest of his life in solitude. It may not be the life the society around him looks highly upon, but it's indeed the life he aspires to.
@StanleyMessie Which is exactly what he thought was happening with Henry. He thought he'd found his brother, but it turned out to be a drifter leeching off of him. I personally think that event really drove him to true misanthropy, whereas before he hadn't truly hated people.
@Scar231 Well it's mostly because he was a descendant of Cain, if not for that he would be allowed the happiness and the friendship he desires. Could have found a friend in Eli but he was destined to be alone.
@Scar231 But if you think about it, everything he did was because of HW. He came to love him because of guilt, but he did loved him. Think about the baptism, you can see how hurt Daniel is about the HW situation.
The bastard in a basket moment is mere pain from Daniel, because not even someone who was sort of obligated to be with him stayed by his side. He blames Eli for that, and for him being deft, he kills him because he feels he need to be punished by the horror he caused to his son.
@Scar231 I don't know, at some points the movie seems to suggest a chance at redemption, most notably through his son. That little flashback at the end is nothing if not sentimental. He ultimately rejects his son but I don't think he's quite so irredeemable as some say
@Scar231 Yes, but part of what makes him fascinating is his apparent genuine love for his son. This sentiment of his is in direct contradiction to the rest of his personality, which is hateful and consummately competitive. This is a repeated source of conflict in the movie, culminating in the final blow up that occurs between him and his son at the end of the movie. Because he has "a competition in" himself, he cannot abide the thought of his son running his own oil company.
This is what I like about Daniel Day Lewis, he wait's awhile to pick a great film and they turn out great. See he isn't in it for the money he is in it for the fun of it. And he isn't like most of the actor's today who just pick a movie for the money and they turn out horrible. In my opinion Daniel Day Lewis = Greatest Actor of all Time.
@FoshaProductions well I would have to agree, an actor of his caliber needs a few years to breath before doing his next roll, and he gets a lot of room since he's so media evasive. but one thing i have to say is that he is as much "in it for the money" as a lot of actors these days. he certainly has enough, but it doesn't mean that he refuses the millions he gets for each release.
A dark and chilling film that leaves you on the edge of your seat with a character who is tragic, yet fascinating, at best. The music helps the film rise the stature of extraordinary and keeps on building with every scene Daniel appears in. A truly incredible film, one that should not be forgotten.
@shuloopie 2008 was really a hard one to decide, everybody knew it was either going to be "No Country For Old Men" or this one, I truly love both of them because they focus on the darkness and hatred in mankind
Love the final scene. Especially when Daniel Day Lewis keeps poking Eli in the chest with his index finger and saying, "Listen, Listen, Listen, I paid him 10,000 dollars, cash in hand, *clap* just like that!"
I recently moved out of my old place, but not before sitting my foreclosing landlord down and utterly annihilating him with words. After 2 hours, he began to sob. I stared at him, satisfied, and then I turned and walked out the door with this blasting in my mind. Greatest film, maybe ever.
A truly classic movie with a truly classic ending.
