  • Amazing ! ! !

  • Ahh, douchbaggery at its finest. "Eggs" like this are why gaijin are hated in Japan.

  • @Saigaijin69 He is half Caucasian and half Okinawan-Japanese He was born and raised in Okinawa. I know sometimes mixed children end up looking more white or more Japanese, but that doesn't make them any less part of the culture.

  • ageh? that's mean ouch in Visayan

  • Shiisa yaibin!

  • Great idea! Nifee debiru!

  • Kuchi ganga naa ya yakutatan.

Hahaha I wouldn't exactly claim to be a smooth talker - I am rather garrulous and chatty when I want to but importantly I speak from my heart and call it as it is - but just for the fun of looking at the two sides aren't those who can't do anything and can't talk at all be worse good-for-nothings?

Or you aren't conversational, nerdy, and have no life or no opinion?

  • Okinawan and Japanese is Difficult Language?

  • @Jayzane91 Okinawan is hard, but Japanese isn't.

  • @Jayzane91 same. Afrikaans:Dutch=Okinawan:Japanese

  • What is Jim Carrey doing there..?

  • Wait so okinawa people speak both the mainland and okinawan language ? Which one are they better at?

  • @wootful93 The elderly are usually better a their native Ryukyuan language, but the young mostly only speak Japanese with a slightly different accent.

There are actually two languages on the island of Okinawa. ''Okinawan'' proper, in the south and central parts, and Kunigami, in the North.

The other Ryukyuan islands have different but closely-related languages, and often the older generations speaks more than one Ryukyuan language as they didn't use Japanese for trading with other islands.

  • @wootful93 Okinawan language.

  • I think it is time that the Japanese government and her people has to totally get rid of their hegemony mentality and policy. It is the high time to save the Ryukyu language!!! Long live RYUKYU LANGUAGE!!!

  • "Okinawa" was part of china and china will get it back later in the 21st century.

  • @TheDreamer138

Do you think the Okinawan will choose to be a part of China while they know what is going on in Tibet.

  • @zerotiger2008 I am not the one you asked but I doubt Okinawa will want to be part of China. If anything they will want to be independent from Japan.

  • @AliYuseph

Their internal GDP is just about 5 billion USD.

How can they possibly maintain their independence with it?

    They are not fool.

  • @zerotiger2008 I did't say that they will become independent tomorrow..

Plus they are small, they can survive on a small amount of money, and like every country they will be getting money from other countries. Most likely from the US. I doubt they will be independent anyway.

  • @AliYuseph

The most prior factor to indepencence is Okinawan's will, however, there is no such, except for very few extreamist.

In addition their unique culture is vanishing, generation by generation.

I can't imagine the Okinawa as independent state judging from various aspect.

  • think about the future of okinawan

  • When I was stationed in Okinawa in 1962 - 63, there was a young boy there who

looked more American than Okinawan. He lived in Naminoue and spoke

only Uchina Guchi. I used to talk to him thru my Koibito, he told me what

state in the US that his father was from, which I don't remember. I've often

wondered what happen to that boy. Nifee deebiru, Akabu. Thank you, John.

  • @akio1uo

Yeah man I was concentrating on the subtitles so much that I didn't even realize he wasn't speaking Japanese. The utterances and tone are really similar but when I stopped to listen to the actual words the vocab did not match up to the equivalent in Japanese.

  • so true!!! i'm a peruvian sansei and i'm enjoying this!

why isn't there more chapters??? i really like these lessons :p

  • hey i'm from Peru and Okinawa decedent too !

  • Just thought I decided to post, especially for those that say my parents, or I understand "okinawan". Now heres some real knowledge, there is no such thing as "Okinawan or the okinawan language". There are different parts of the island that speak totally differen't languages. This one is Naha. People from miyako speak miyako, southern okinawa speak Itoman. Just thought i share that, and stay tune ill be posting some videos on Itoman, its very smiliar to shuri the language byron is speaking

  • im japanese but i had to read english subtitle to understand what he said.. 0_o

  • @akio1uo It's amazing how different it is to standard Japanese isn't it - even a 外人 like me can tell! I suppose the kanji are read differently too. Fascinating stuff.

  • Hold up...did he really just lay his life story on the line? So if he has never met his dad, like he says, I must assume that he doesn't know English. Ouch...the stereotypes and bullying that go with that.

  • Man i want to go to Yonaguni; isolated cultures and languages really get me hard. So to speak.

  • Aww I want to call my grandma now, my dad speaks fluent Okinawan and Japanese!! I like that Okinawan language.....

  • nihongo de ok

  • This is fascinating! Thanks for sharing!

  • Is this available without the voiceover?

  • I like this. Really helpful. What are the words for:

    Peace =

    Family =

    Fun =

    sorta discouraging. lol xD

  • I loved okinawa it was a very beautiful island! I really wish that i had learned the language while there.

  • All my support to Okinawan and Ainu cultures of Japan.May they thrive in shamanic wisdom with their rights respected !

  • In my city theres only traditional japanese class. someone from okinawa could tell me if when i go to Okinawa some day and speak japanese if okinawans would understand me?

  • yes japanese is the 1st language here, actually the young here dont speak Okinawan...This guy is trying hard to bring back the language...sad that its slowly being forgotten...

  • OMFReaking freak! I thought he was speaking in Nihongo until I heard him say "si" or 'ti" instead of "shi" or "chi" and I hardly recognized any familiar Japanese term. His greeting was very alien to me.

I dropped by because of some series of clicks about History of Japanese and Korean languages. I suddenly got interested in the Okinawan languages

  • How interesting! As a western Taoist, I would like to know if this has anything to do with the Taoist introduction into Japan?

  • ..."Ryukyu". The Ryukyu Kingdom was once an independent kingdom and once became a tributary state of the Ming Dynasty (China) then to Japan. The island became Japan for about 66 years. After World War 2, became a territory of the United States till 1972.

When I was little, I was told from my mom that first you are Okinawan then Japanese. Do not forget it".

  • I'm 52 and only 2 years ago i found out i am okinawan and not japanese.

  • Wow!

  • shit i don't know japan have two language

i thought only one wich is NIHONGO

  • They have some common linguistic and grammatic elements, but it'd be like comparing English to German or something.

  • Yes exactly. It's a japanese nationalist vision to define it as "dialect" (UNESCO defines it clearly as "language")

  • Comment removed

  • Lets chat in Okinawan?! While I, Bryon, wear my pajamas.

  • OKinawan is not a dialect!!!!

  • "Viwers overseas"

Well, Ima brazilian sansei, okinawan-descendant. Cool!!

  • omg i'm japanese but i don't understand what he's saying!!!!!

  • Woooow, I was expecting him to know some English!!! Lol, so weird, but cool.

  • Some words are similar, but I'm having lots of trouble especially in the basic expressions, those are pretty different from Japanese.

  • Wow! I'm Japanese but I've caught the meaning by reading English subtitles, even he speaks a kind of Japanese. What an odd feeling! Sound like Korean.

  • yea i also heard an "imnida" in there

  • yes

  • i can also understand uchina-guchi but cant speak very well, can speak only very casual uchina-guchi or mix of japanese and uchina-guchi. most of young people(20s) might be the same as me, i think.

btw, i think he's a mix of uchinanchu and american.

although his father is american, the basic rule is that you are not american unless you were born there or hold a U.S. passport. that is the western concept you are of your nation, despite what you look like or cultural/ethnic background.

  • If you look in the upper hand corner.....you can see the website that this was originally posted on. Go there and you can see it without the English voice over.

  • Well, she is also Okinawan. So you wouldn't get to hear Mainland Japanese and Okinawan side by side.

  • What I don't get is the need to have a spoken voice traslate the woman, while having subtitles talking for the man. I'd like to hear the differences between Okinawan and Mainland Japanese side by side.
