I am a huge fan of the Khan Academy ... But ! .. and I hate to say it folks ... you gotta check out Neal Adams Growing earth vids ... you just gotta ! ! ... Kind regards
I think the only thing that bugs me is when you get the people who say "No no no the earth is expanding and plates are not really being subducted, they just get overidden in the flow of plates which debunks GPS measurements but don't worry cause you won't see any evidence of growth and no we don't have a mechanism but science says that even if we don't have a way for mass to be generated, our theory still holds" I feel like I should go crawl into a science hole and just die...
At 7:50 Sal says that from the underwater fault ridges there are alternatingly symmetrical aligned magnetic properties in hardened lava. This doesn't surprise me, BUT what does surprise me is that he says the flip-flopping of the magnetic poles is so abrupt. Seemly from north to south and then vice-versa. Wouldn't it take a gradual change over thousands of years to flip the magnetic poles of Earth?
You are right. Most models predict that a reversal in Earth's magnetic field would take a couple thousand years. However, in a geologic time scale, this is practically intantaneous.
Hi, the video is really insightful, got me to understand my lecture notes really quick. However, I was wondering if you would provide notes to be printed out, as you know, video is a form of media that is only available in digital format. It would be better to have printed out notes and images to refer to.
@timothydfrank1991 if the earth is growing...were is it getting the extra mass necessary for it's expansion? you don't believe the plaques can move apart and converge? Btw, if they created the 'Pangée' billions of years ago and separated, (give or take a few billion years) they will reconnect on the 'other side' of the Earth. By then human life will probably have been wiped out but not Life.
@HyperBorealOperator It's just so sad that even the best people like Sal could get flagged (or worse) over some people's beliefs if they take offense.
Hi Sal. I was wondering how you were going to cover this topic.
There is a video that uses a map from the National Geophysical Data Center that sows the Ages of the Ocean Floor.
According to this video the earth is expanding, if you bury the more recent ocean floor under the older one... you get a very clear picture of how it expanded.
Even though Sal Khan is only trying his best to teach people ans science is in essence neutral, some people will still find this video either offensive and controversial. I wonder if Sal has had messages or comments about that sort of thing. My advice is just to put up a message "viewer discretion advised" and put "If you don't like what you see, don't watch" or something.
@alkalait The Bible is not a science text book but when it does touch on things of a scientific nature, it is accurate. The Bible doesn't discuss how God created the Earth. And contrary to erroneous popular belief, the Bible does not say the Earth was created in 7 calendar days. A creative day could have been 100 years, 1000 years, 1million years, 1 billions years, we don't know. I don't see any conflict between this information and creation.
I don't believe in plate tectonics because it isn't in the bible and there is no evidence for it.

By the way, the point was to say "Nice to see some real science concerning plate tectonics on this site for a change"

It would seem that since lava has been and still is and will continue to pour out that there would be a gradual shift!

Strong retard, certain plates converge against each other, whilst others move apart from each other and others are transform faults.
Just get the fuck out LMAO.

science doesn't have an easy button like the bible "god did it" easy answer
