In my university, we had this program where we "learned" about disadvantaged people for one half of the year, and volunteered for the other half. While the volunteering was beneficial, I found the "learning' to be ridiculus. It would have been valuable to learn statistics or history, or anything that actually constituted information in that class. Instead, we spent 70% of class time watching promotional videos from various charity organizations and speeches.cont..

I graduated from college only a few years ago and this sort of thing is quite common. I used to get into arguements all the time with leftwing professors over this sort of nonsense. I am by nature a combative person who hates being told what to do or think, consequently I was'nt able to be indoctrinated,but some students of a gentler disposition probably were. It's amazing that this sort of leftest bias has'nt changed since Bill Buckley wrote GOD AND MAN AT YALE in the 1950s.

For a video that was supposed to be informative about a certain program there was very little in the way, you know, information about. Most of the video concentrated ironically in telling me what to think about the program and quoting students making statements they had obviously been coached to say. But even Christian schools present the material in a way that is open for debate (mine did), and debate should be willing. If someone doesn't want to talk about their beliefs, they should not have to.

That is not right at all. It's not solving the issue of prejudice at all. It's rather promoting it. I mean not everytime a white tells off a minority or a christian tells someone of another religion off it isn't always prejudice. Sadly, this exact type of program exists within the U.S. military - it comes from the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI). A friend of mine had to take this course. He learned that being a white, Christian male means you're a racist. According to him, he was the only one (white, male) who didn't "crack". He said it was the worst 15 weeks of his life.

This is classic "proof texting." The young woman in the video hints at something: if she's been talking and thinking about racism since she was in kindergarten, even though those notions weren't political definitions of the term, her past experiences ought to have been the starting place for these discussions.

This is not surprising at all. I attended a college in upstate New York that had a prodominate population of blacks/latinos in the dormitories as I was away for school 3 years ago. The college I attended was focusing on getting enrolling students from the NYC/LI regions, specifically on these groups of people. And I do not think it was just about making money for the college. In addition to, I think my peers were also willingly conforming with one another with ease, like watching BET all day.

NONE of these activities were ever mandatory. The only mandatory program at UD is alcoholEdu which is unbiased, and presents the facts about alcohol- the legal limit for driving, BAC curves, the legal consequences for underage drinking, and so on. UD is an excellent institution, and its reputation does not deserve to be smeared so that the general public has something to talk about at the water cooler on Monday mornings.

i wonder if anyone thought to mention that UD was under alot of pressure to stop the hate crimes that were going around campus when they started to implement this program. I was a freshman at UD that year and I was not forced to participate in many of the programs detailed. there was only ONE program we were made to go to and it made me feel safer as a minority that the university wanted to end the hate. it was the wrong program but the right message.

In my university, we had this program where we "learned" about disadvantaged people for one half of the year, and volunteered for the other half. While the volunteering was beneficial, I found the "learning' to be ridiculus. It would have been valuable to learn statistics or history, or anything that actually constituted information in that class. Instead, we spent 70% of class time watching promotional videos from various charity organizations and speeches.cont..

I graduated from college only a few years ago and this sort of thing is quite common. I used to get into arguements all the time with leftwing professors over this sort of nonsense. I am by nature a combative person who hates being told what to do or think, consequently I was'nt able to be indoctrinated,but some students of a gentler disposition probably were. It's amazing that this sort of leftest bias has'nt changed since Bill Buckley wrote GOD AND MAN AT YALE in the 1950s.

But even Christian schools present the material in a way that is open for debate (mine did), and debate should be willing. If someone doesn't want to talk about their beliefs, they should not have to.
Its one thing to present perspectives to students; its another to enforce certain opinions as wrong in an education system. That does not encourage development.

Sadly, this exact type of program exists within the U.S. military - it comes from the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI). A friend of mine had to take this course. He learned that being a white, Christian male means you're a racist. According to him, he was the only one (white, male) who didn't "crack". He said it was the worst 15 weeks of his life.

Defending "individual" rights, is indeed admirable but sounds very similar to the "states' rights" agenda from the past designed to preserve the (then) status quo rather than extend civil rights to all Americans. I am suspicious of this posting. It has placed labels such as "thought control" upon this program and then presents quotes from the written materials to prove their point of view. This is classic "proof texting." I am especially suspicious of the quotes: "Each student will ...., etc." These quotes are presented as if they are commandments or orders to the student, when they are probably, rather, descriptions of what will occur as a student participates in the sessions. Like a syllabus.

I don't agree with the means by which the UD attempted to educate students about concepts of privilege, oppression and justice, but that does not devalue the importance of these issues. The young woman in the video hints at something: if she's been talking and thinking about racism since she was in kindergarten, even though those notions weren't political definitions of the term, her past experiences ought to have been the starting place for these discussions.

This is not surprising at all. I attended a college in upstate New York that had a prodominate population of blacks/latinos in the dormitories as I was away for school 3 years ago. The college I attended was focusing on getting enrolling students from the NYC/LI regions, specifically on these groups of people. And I do not think it was just about making money for the college. In addition to, I think my peers were also willingly conforming with one another with ease, like watching BET all day.

Programs like this university program train people to become race conscious and teachers students to view each other simply as members of a race rather than as individuals. A person's worth is not based upon what race or groups they are categorized it. The university should view everyone as individuals rather than simply labels or members of collective groups. This university program in itself is racist; it divides people by racial classification instead of treating them as individuals.

The key to ending racism isn't to tolerate other races. It's to realize that the classification of race should not exist in the first place. Program that promotes tolerance is just saying "this person is a minority, and their different, but you should treat them the same"," which inevitably promote that people are "different" based on the color of their skin.

Because Residence Life produced documents that were harmful and those documents are evidence.
Residence Life personnel were not needed to comment on their own documents.

The programm is a racially motivated attack on people of european anchestry. Its Psychological sterilization. Youre gay ? good! youre straight ? oppressor! Its easier to do than cutting your balls off.
What is not said in that video is: The effect (and intention) of the programm was to intimidate and humiliate WHITE students. its a racist program. It also prepares people for a totalitarian government.

NONE of these activities were ever mandatory. The only mandatory program at UD is alcoholEdu which is unbiased, and presents the facts about alcohol- the legal limit for driving, BAC curves, the legal consequences for underage drinking, and so on. UD is an excellent institution, and its reputation does not deserve to be smeared so that the general public has something to talk about at the water cooler on Monday mornings.

As senior at the University of Delaware I can honestly say that this video is horribly biased. It's disgusting that the media would undermine the reputation of an excellent school just to increase the number of hits on their web site, but I'm not surprised. The media quite obviously is a reflection of what people are reacting to, not a reflection of what's actually going on in the world. I think both the students and the faculty in this video served to illustrate that UD is an excellent school; this video was about a program that should never have existed and that was rightfully canceled as soon as the admin discovered it. How does that undermine UD? It was not supported by UD whatsoever.

I suppose it's worth noting I was an RA in my senior year. Let me clear up things:
1. "Forced interrogations." These were called one-on-ones. And the primary goal of them was to check the well-being of residents, to see if they were being bullied, or bullying themselves. We also knew it as a suicide watch.
2. "Can't keep papers UD hands out": Did you miss the recycling bend of sustainability? They were to be reused. When FIRE started, we took them all back to reevalutate; and gave them to FIRE

Then your opinion is worthless. The views of a tyrannical oppressor, who does NOTHING to stop the censorship and indoctrination that ocurred, cannot be considered reliable.
I think you should very seriously consider that MANY tyrannies thought there were legitimate reasons for being tyrannical.
That you lack the intellectual capability, and ethical honesty to understand that does not make it go away.

Opinions are not worth anything. They simply state an opinion. Since nothing in the Res Life program could be enforced, there was no tyranny. Know what would happen if you refused to participate?
... nothing! RAs and HDs had no power to force people to come to these program.
Tyranny implies you have some way to force people to comply. There wasn't that power. There was influence, of course, and that was used to try and stop hate crimes that HAVE and CONTINUE TO occur at UD.

The Res Life program did have things wrong with it. But FIRE takes it very much out of context. Anyone else remember being a freshman at UD? I do. Racism? Homophobia? Oh hell yes they existed. Hate crimes occurred several times in my freshman year.
Only wacky thing FIRE accurately hit on was the definition of racism; which was JUST adopted in 07-08, and discarded soon after. Even the RAs complained about it

I have looked at both sides of the issue concerning our reslife program-- and i've formed my own opinions. i agree with some things, and disagree with others-- if that makes me biased, then so be it. i'm just saying this video doesn't represent the other views on our campus-- it's completely biased.

Catholic universities advertise themselves as Catholic - nothing hidden there. Delaware offered itself as a liberal, freethinking university, and it was just the reverse. And, god forbid, any of our children should feel uncomfortable. (P.S. - too bad you can't spell).

i wonder if anyone thought to mention that UD was under alot of pressure to stop the hate crimes that were going around campus when they started to implement this program. I was a freshman at UD that year and I was not forced to participate in many of the programs detailed. there was only ONE program we were made to go to and it made me feel safer as a minority that the university wanted to end the hate. it was the wrong program but the right message.
