Wonderful video. I too took a fall during a jump a couple of years ago (age 50) and my helmet saved my life I believe. It completely cracked all the way across the top. I used to only wear my helmet on jumps, never on the trail. Now I am not seen without my helmet on.
a few weeks ago i was riding my 22 year old mare without a helmet. Ususally I wear one, but seeing as she was my 22 year old dependable, trustworthy horse, I didn't think i needed one for my quick ten minute ride. She ended up spooking and I fell off (did i mention that i was bareback? not one of the smartest things i did in life). Luckily I only ended up with a minor concussion but it could have been much worse. Point? WEAR YOUR HELMET!!!!
The horse says: "Please wear a helmet. If you fall off and die of a head injury...I will miss you...and then who will take care of me"? Listen to the horse.
I was on my pony bareback in a tiny round pen, and he's the most bombproof pony in the world, and I forgot my helmet so I jumped off and I was like omg I didn't have a helmet, I could've died! Haha yeah. Cute horse.
I believe children are now required to wear them in competition (AHSA). Most riding instructors require them (insurance requirement). They are a good thing. When all the children in Miss May's riding class are required to wear one then everyone looks alike. The last thing a child wants is to look different. You can also get some pretty colorful skins for them to make them uniquely "yours". You just stay on that soapbox girlfriend!!
I'd like to see Western riders wear one as well. It must certainly be possible to design one that looks like a Western hat or that fits under one. A 10 gallon hat is no protection at all. When I was a child and rode a lot my pediatrician told my mother and me that his daughter did jumping and he insisted on a helmet at all times, "If you break your leg I can fix that, but if you smash your skull it's not fixable."
Glad you're ok after your fall and thank you for caring about others and trying to encourage people to wear helmets--I hope people follow your advice--nice job : )
Nice video. I think it's akin to people saying they won't wear a seat belt because it's uncomfortable, bottom line is that they can and do save lives. Thanks for reminding everyone that loves riding how very important a helmet can be. Enjoy that palomino, he/she's a beauty.
I got flipped off my pony when I was riding her in a field at home like 13 years ago (when I was 10) and my head smacked off a rock. I have never since then questioned wearing helmets, not matter how hot it is. Good video, I know a lot of people on youtube are like "I'ts my choice" and yeah, sure, it is, but I will think you're stupid for that choice.
My horse bolted with me when i toke her around the cattle on my grandparents farm i wasn't wearing a helmet i was lucky to have gotten a head injury but i never go ridden without one now
The point of helmets are that if you fall on something hard you don't crack your skull open and aside they soften the impact. They cannot protect your brain from the entire impact though, which still can cause a heavy concussion, depending on the crashland. But if you can choose between a broken skull or just a concussion, I go for the concussion anytime -nods-
If this is a video about safety, best to show some safe practices: should not be handling a horse in improper footwear, improper clothing and without gloves. It's all fine to discuss wearing a helmet while riding. But be a proper example for other safe practices at the same time.
I started wearing a helmet years ago after my old horse started stumbling a lot. I did a couple endo's with him before I decided to retire him for good. At the same time I was starting a 3 year old so I was no safer and just kept on wearing it. Been wearing it for at least 23 years now. I use a motorcycle helmet and it works great, although heavier than a riding helmet, if it's rated for a motorcycle it has to be good!
Proud of you! Glad you weren't hurt any worse! I'm 56 and started riding when I was 51 and feel "naked" without my helmet!! Keep up the good work spreading the news about helmet safety!!
I've also been saved by a helmet. I was walking my horse along a ditch, and he stumbled into me, knocking me over. He ended up jumping over me, and his foot hit my helmet (I had planned on taking him for a trail ride). My helmet literally cracked in two.
This really illustrates the neccesity of a helmet. My neighbor fell off her horse and was injured very badly hitting her head on a rock. A helmet would have saved her a lot of pain and suffering.
I once fell off a pony at a line of fences my foot got caught in the stirrup and I was dragged by the pony through two fences so glad I wore my helmet :D
damn girl thats carbon fibre... 4 times stronger than steel... by the way your hot can i bump your head into the headboard ..... you are tired of seeing the food stamp president.. obama ads too..they are everywhere arent they
I fell off my QH today just a minor fall and didn't hurt too bad but would have hurt probably a lot worse of I wasn't wearing my Helmet because I fell of my back and my head hit the ground but my helmet saved me from a bump on my head but it's a good thing he isn't a huge horse!
When ever I ride I wear a helmet. I fell off a couple weeks ago, cantering. Thank gosh I had one on! Even though I landed on my feet. I am thankful I was wearing one
I was kicked in face/head when I was thrown from a horse and was lucky enough to escape with just cuts and a lot of bruises, all thanks to my helmet :) cant describe how grateful I am!
I was thrown from gelding 4 ago while he was in a dead gallop hit the ground hard up with a left temporal bleed and a broken right clavicle, as I laid in the l unconscious the doctor told my parents had not been for my helmet i could be in a coma or worse. So now i go all over to 4-h clinics and such and speak to young children about safety I carry my old helmet with me that bears a large crack and dried blood that kinda give the kids an idea about how important it is to wear one.
Someone at my barn was riding a green horse with no helmet on, and the horse spooked and she fell on her neck, then got back on the horse without a helmet. It's just stupid not towear one.
UMMMM wearing a helmet is not dorky at all. They look professional if you dont get the kiddy bycicle ones. You look plain dumb if you dont wear one! Most people that no what there doing wair a helmet, the people that are trained by profffesionals, not the backyard riders, and im glad you wear a helmet. They arnt dorky at all. And there really not hot. Get the breezey ones! Im perfectely fine in the 100 deggree weather in the summmer! Dont be stupid and not wear a helmet!
Amercians- I know it's us brits as well, and it's not all of you but- Why would you not wear a helmet when you've seen what horses can do? just cause it looks 'dorky' and makes your head hot? I tell you now, looking dorky and having a hot head is much better then coming off, shattering your skull and leaving you dead or with perniment brain damage.
my sister got bucked off and the moment she hit the (hard and rocky) ground, her helmet cracked and fell off. If she wasn't wearing it, that could have been her head. Luckily, she just eneded with a cut and a fractured wrist but it could have been a lot worse if she hadn't WORN A HELMET.
Great video. Wearing a helmet is so iimportant. I wish I would have had one on when I got bucked off. I too landed face first. I spent four days in critical care and 3 and a 1/2 months recovering from the concussion and traumatic brain injury. It's now the first thing I put oon at the barn!
This video is fantastic!!! What a great way to share how important this is! You know firsthand so people should definitely LISTEN TO YOU! I think you did a great job explaining going into HOW to wear one properly. Thank you so much for sharing!
@13jker hats can save lives too. they lessen the impact. iv had hats save me and tons of others skateboarding as well. and i work 6 hrs a day on horseback in the rocky mountains. theres no way in hell im wearing a helmet.
I've always been taught to wear a hat, I can't imagine riding without one, though I am English, everyone here wears hats, I don't however, wear body armour, only because mine is so stiff and thick, thankyou for making this, it's great advice!
Thanks for the advice. I would like you to know that if you will improve your relationship with your horse & get some savvy you will be much safer! Your horse is giving you no respect. You need to fix this even though it may seem small & insignificant to you. Your horse should respect your space & not be so heavy & resistant when you ask her to back up. These are signs that you need more savvy to be a better leader for your horse...go to Pat Parelli's website & begin a truly rewarding journey.
From the beginning I was taught to always wear a helmet to prevent those sorts of injuries. Riding can still be dangerous no matter what precautions you take. Since I wore them from the beginning I never thought they looked silly or anything. It was just another part of being a horse person.
good girl ! i know what you mean, i was cantering my pony bareback and in a halter and he got a bit to smart and dissident to have a buck, i stayed on but he threw his head down and went for a little pig-root, i flew over his head and landed on my neck and hip. i thank god that day i wasn't put in hospital. I had my hamlet on but i wasn't going to put it on cuz i thought i was going to be fine. I have never done any thing besides walking on a horse with out a helmet its way to risky
saved my life last summer when I somersaulted off y favourite horse who decided to go mental in a field. didn't save my ankle though, I couldn't walk properly for 3weeks, didnt go to hospital and it's still deformed now... haha!
I always ride with a riding hat, but I've only fallen off once-then again, I've only been riding for four years, and I'm only just jumping now-there hasn't been much chance to fall off-two(ish) years ago I fell off and my horse bolted, and I lost my confidence, so I started at the begining-that's why I am only jumping now, four years after I started-this post is taking ages, I probably should have shut up when i said I always ride with a hat. hmm...
before i only walked wile rideing and used my bike helmet AND I KNOW IT IS NOT SAFE BUT ITS BETER THAN NUTHING!!!! naw i have a horse rideing helmet! and i am vary glad you are ok
I am a trainer and have been riding for almost 40 years..I always wear a helmet and make all of my students wear them too..I went into an oak tree headfirst and the helmet split down the middle..That could have been my head..broken bones heal,..broken skulls dont! Please wear a helmet!
Very nice helmet lesson. We have about 40 equine students here, learning to ride and jump. Not only do all of students where a helmet, but the trainer does and also the instructors. And these are nice horses, but the rider can still just fall off. If you are in Buford, Georgia, come ride one of our horses.
So glad to see more young riders embracing helmets! They aren't just for jumpers and contesters either - dressage, western pleasure, saddle seat - any horse can be unpredictable in the right environment!
wow your beautiful. Question: Do you think you have a true relationship with the horse, or would you think interacting (using) a horse for a "sport" type thing has somewhat, how should I put it, narrowed the potential for being close to an animal like a horse for more than simply show jumping?
I put stickers on mine. lol i jump a lot and if my horse refuses and steps on me by accident, i know it could kill me. he hasnt done it to me yet. but i know its yet to come. (: good job on wearing it. I actually mimic and make fun of people who dont wear it.
I'm reposting this to my FB page for my horsey friends to watch...thank you for sharing...I wear a helmet and event vest when riding and lunging...the worst accident I've ever seen was a girl lunging a horse...
i know i should wear one but i seem very lucky because i get bucked off atleast once a weekend i brake colts by the way and im 13 lol yea but i heard that they can also harm u too if u fall and land on ur neck it willl brake ur neck because first of all u fall on it and seconde of all the helmet is on ur brain stem and that sends a current through ur body and makes u get dizzy and u will knockout so yall should think about that also :)! and by the way beautiful horse! :x
@horselover4eva100 The risk of falling off and sustaining a fatal injury without a helmet is MUCH higher than while wearing one. It's no different than the fact that while in certain situations seatbelts may inhibit survival, they are stastically much safer than going without. The whole brain stem theory is completely untrue by the way..this coming to you from a medical student and collegiate equestrian athlete. No matter what you say, you can't justify not wearing a helmet!
@13bsag if your talking to 13horseluvr...i suggest that u take your own advice...if not..idk who ur talking to...but whatever...if u dont wear a helmet...ur just diggin ur own grave...
I agree! I never get on any of my horses without one. Just not worth the risk. Plus, where we ride is super rocky, large rocks that if you came off and hit one on your head, you'd be seriously hurt. I've come off and hit my head WITH my helmet on and saw stars. Can't imagine what it would've been like without the helmet, but not good!
well if it saved your life why aren't you wearing it on your head while recording this video it doesnt protect you when your holding it, you need to be wearing it
great vid. i was sent to the hospital 3 days ago from breaking my left collarbone in half. from falling off, i landed on my head. if i wouldn't have worn a helmet, i would have had some severe problems. never taking my helmet off again! let this be a lessin kiddies ! glad you're alright .
Great vid! I for one hate hate hate wearing helmets but I have been sent to the hospital multiple times with concussions adn I was luckily wearing a helmet those times. Probably saved my life. Glad to see your okay.
It is reccomended to replace your helmet EVERYtime you fall upon your head from a horse. But; She proabably only kept the helmet to show these viewers
I'm about yer age, but my hat'll be sufficient. Had a couple falls, but we all do. Been doing it for a bit too long to be wearing a helmet, but then again, I'd make my future kids wear one...
I biked for years before I started riding horses. I always wore a helmet biking and it saved my life when I wiped out on the road and flipped over the handlebars. I was going fast enough that it catapulted me about fifteen or twenty feet through the air before I landed on my head. It cracked the helmet open like an egg but except for a slight concussion, my head was Ok and I'm alive today. I also had a similar experience on a horse, I came off and was kicked in the head; saved by the helmet.
Yes your correct dont use it. It is best to buy a new helmet because once that one had been in a serious fall because it does not work as well and it is not safe! Cute horse11
thank you so much! i never wanted to but was forced to. i was told once im more expreienced i didnt have to, but now i relize i must. thanks so much and who knows.....you might have just saved my life!!!!!!!!!!
@kaebff ...i was just about to like your comment after reading the part where you said you didnt want to but were forced to since its the same with me. obviously... and then i realized it was you. BA-hahahaha! ill like it anyway though :)
they do look dumb, but on my first ride my friend got bucked off and kicked in the head. she wore a helmet and it kept her from being dead... so i dont care how i look in one, i wear it any time im on the horse... kind of like a motorcycle, yeah?
dam shes hot

Of all the helmets I've gone through, the worst accidents were the ones where I thought I didn't really need a helmet in that situation.

I always ride with a riding hat, but I've only fallen off once-then again, I've only been riding for four years, and I'm only just jumping now-there hasn't been much chance to fall off-two(ish) years ago I fell off and my horse bolted, and I lost my confidence, so I started at the begining-that's why I am only jumping now, four years after I started-this post is taking ages, I probably should have shut up when i said I always ride with a hat. hmm...

I am a trainer and have been riding for almost 40 years..I always wear a helmet and make all of my students wear them too..I went into an oak tree headfirst and the helmet split down the middle..That could have been my head..broken bones heal,..broken skulls dont! Please wear a helmet!

You know what we call riders that don't wear helmets .... organ donors!!
RagtopDazed 1 month ago
Very nice helmet lesson. We have about 40 equine students here, learning to ride and jump. Not only do all of students where a helmet, but the trainer does and also the instructors. And these are nice horses, but the rider can still just fall off. If you are in Buford, Georgia, come ride one of our horses.

So umm, Did you know all horses go full force to a jump??
immacoolperson3 1 month ago
I actually feel more uncomfortable riding without a helmet, I just feel more vulnerable!
They make helmets as comfortable as possible, there's no excuse to not wear one!

@MissAshy94 it's a horse that's not long been broken in. It's not experienced enough and hasn't been educated. :)

So glad to see more young riders embracing helmets! They aren't just for jumpers and contesters either - dressage, western pleasure, saddle seat - any horse can be unpredictable in the right environment!

I love the horse's expression throughout the video. It's kinda "I hope you're listening!" :D
Tim733733 1 month ago
wow your beautiful. Question: Do you think you have a true relationship with the horse, or would you think interacting (using) a horse for a "sport" type thing has somewhat, how should I put it, narrowed the potential for being close to an animal like a horse for more than simply show jumping?
101101101777 1 month ago
I put stickers on mine. lol i jump a lot and if my horse refuses and steps on me by accident, i know it could kill me. he hasnt done it to me yet. but i know its yet to come. (: good job on wearing it. I actually mimic and make fun of people who dont wear it.

itsibitsirider 1 month ago
i know i should wear one but i seem very lucky because i get bucked off atleast once a weekend i brake colts by the way and im 13 lol yea but i heard that they can also harm u too if u fall and land on ur neck it willl brake ur neck because first of all u fall on it and seconde of all the helmet is on ur brain stem and that sends a current through ur body and makes u get dizzy and u will knockout so yall should think about that also :)! and by the way beautiful horse! :x
horselover4eva100 1 month ago
@horselover4eva100 The risk of falling off and sustaining a fatal injury without a helmet is MUCH higher than while wearing one. It's no different than the fact that while in certain situations seatbelts may inhibit survival, they are stastically much safer than going without. The whole brain stem theory is completely untrue by the way..this coming to you from a medical student and collegiate equestrian athlete. No matter what you say, you can't justify not wearing a helmet!
EllieEquestrienne 1 month ago
They save lives! My ma always made me where one when I rode. Good thing too cause I've gotten bucked off before. Your horse is beautiful!!
