@rusherx Yes it is a good thing. The Native Americans were treated terribly by the white men who came to the U.S. and took their land and committed other atrocities upon them. Freberg was commenting on this long before anyone else was. "We know everyone can't be as American as we." What a perfect satirical ironic comment on the white man's relationship with the Native American. So yes it's a good thing that Freberg was commenting on this injustice.
@paperdain I know a Cherokee who loves this too. She laughed herself silly when she first heard it. She's been to my house for Thanksgiving a few times too. :-)
The always brilliant Stan Freberg is one of America's forgotten treasures. His wonderful wit and style are much needed now. It's a pity he's been so reclusive in recent years.
Saying an Indian would probably owe allegiance to Chief Powhatan was a reference to the 1960 presidential election (This was released in 1961). There were people who believed that John Kennedy a Catholic, would probably let the Pope influence how the country was run...an absolutely absurd idea, that Freeberg satirizes perfectly.
Okay, now I found it! This is so brilliant. Freeberg was aware of the plight of the Native Americans way back before it was P.C. "We know everyone can't be as American as we...after all WE came over on the Mayflower!" I have Native American friends who absolutely loved this recording! Bravo Stan Freeberg! RMphy89 thank you for posting!
I remember this bit back in the 60's - I don't recall who used it - probably jfk against nixon...The Rats got the injun vote in '60..wonder if the demoRATS thought about that this year with obama lama ding dong...queer marriage, citizenship for illegal injuns & abortion mills for congress and higher gas prices and taxes...
Yes, you certainly don't see things like this anymore because most people wouldn't know what to do with a big slab of vinyl anymore. The cover of this LP is a scream...Freeberg has a crewcut, black socks, and very shiny black shoes, yet the humor is subversive and Groucho-like. Cool!
Stan had a voice you could light a match on, but he did have a very funny way of looking at the world. He surrounded himself with some of the best talent of the day and it came out thus...
I've always loved this excerpt from The United States of America. Freberg was politically correct before anyone had even heard the term.

"Take An Indian To Lunch" is my best friend's(who's Shoshone) favorite comedy bit. He keeps asking when I'm gonna invite him to Thanksgiving. ROTFOL

"Who're you taking the witch-burning Saturday night?"
Funny explanation of the national bird and the whole turkey thing.
