their some places in Oxford street that you should not go, in fact oxford street is where a lot of perps gather together and microwave unsuspecting victims.
some of them are out of it "day dreaming" sneering up and down the place.
Going to London? Avoid Oxford Street where you can. Busy and bland. Apart from HMV and TopShop, Selfridges, and John Lewis. The footage shown looks pretty quiet to me. Go on Christmas Eve and you WILL see fights. Chavs pick bags and pockets on Saturdays/school holidays. Better shopping can be had in Soho, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Chelsea. Don't go to Borough on Saturdays (loads of tourists) and Portobello and Camden are very overrated these days (bar the Underworld).
Bruton Street, Conduit Street, Knightsbridge and Sloane Street, King's Road (Chelsea - go early if it's on a Saturday), Regent Street (ditto), Soho (not Carnaby Street or near Oxford Street), Spitalfields (go early on Sunday), Borough market (go on Friday, or early on Saturday), Marylebone and Bond Street (early Saturday). Some of the above are pricey shopping areas, but I'll still brave Oxford Street at the right time if only to go to the shops mentioned above - oh & Borders. Portobello's bad!
Lots of grunge and emo tat at Camden if you like that kind of thing, and also some fabric and rustic cosmetics but lots of tourist tat, too. Hampstead High Street has some nice little shops and is a bit pricey. Islington Upper Street is okay but stick to the Highbury and Islington end - not the Angel end. Colombia Road market between Shoreditch and Hackney is quite good - go early as it's busy. Zone 1 is good if you follow the advice given below (or above!) and it's mostly North of the Thames.
Thank you. I am from America, and I will be going out there in a few months to check out the sites and sounds of London. While I like to see what other tourist sees, I also like to go off the beaten path to places where most tourist haven't gone.

I think london is so backward civilization. Londo is extremely behind the times. And it is extremely-dirty.

Where do most Londoners shop these days then? Oxford street always seems full of tourists to me.

PS If you like reading/studying there are several more good book shops on Charing Cross Road near Tottenham Court Road tube station.
PPS There is some scaffolding on some sites at the minute so check before you visit.
