This happened one day last summer here in Fayetteville NC. Except it was a beautiful sunny day, all of a sudden it got cloudy very fast. Being from NYC,my experiences with severe weather are quite few. Suddenly doors here started flapping and banging in the wind, lawn chairs and everything that wasn't attached to something, started blowing towards us and the fence.lasted for about 10 min. Was very bizarre, and what I'd imagine was merely a fragment the strength of a what a true tornado.would be.
It goes to show you tornados are not the only thing to worrie about during a severe thunder storm just straight line winds and even dowmbursts can cause enough damage.
It doesn't look like any more than about 60 mph at that location. It looks like the roofing paper was old and rotten the way it crumbled up and disintegrated as it blew off. This is what happens when roofing paper is not regularly replaced in a timely manner before it rots. If it wasn't rotten, it would not have blown off. The guy in the video had no problem standing perfectly upright too.
@cape6000jkg If you watch the wind flips over one of those giant heavy metal trash dumpsters end over end so that takes some strong wind. When the guy was outside the strong gust was already over, it only lasted for 15 seconds then was over. But, yes the roof was made of cheap materials.
oh man, I miss Texas storms. I used to live down in Corpus Christi (about 30 years ago) and I still remember how wicked the storms were. Constant lightning and low dark clouds. I slept like a baby when it rained.
nao tenho coragem de morar no texas nao viu, ou melhor, nao tenho coragem de morar em nenhum lugar dessas bandas ai, nem estados unidos america do norte em geral, eu nao tenho coragem, sò tem dessas coisas e morro de medo.
@longbeach225 Yup. it will find a minute weakness, that all roofs have. and exploit it. even if this store had hurricane straps. it woudl have at least torn some paper
This downburst, is it the same as a tornado or just a sudden gust of wind? Looked scary as hell & the guy that pulled out the parking lot did so in just the nick of time!!
@cwazmann1 well a tornado is is air rusihing into it. extreme low pressure. damage /blown down trees point to the tornado. , downbursts/microbursts, air in essence ggoes straight down to ground and out in all directions
I remember we had straight line winds like this when my mom went to the store and a fucking giant sheet metal roof almost came down on her in her car, scary shit
@Silverhedgehog1000 Well a microburst is a type of downburst as is macroburst...but in any case you definitely don't want one of those knocking on your door. A truly amazing display of the Earth's power!
With a damaged or missing roof like this, you're not happy to be confronted by heavy rains just after it happens - which it looks like was coming, at the end of the video.

It doesn't take much wind to flip some dumpsters, especially if one is near a building where compression or wind-tunnel effect is occurring.

It has nothing to do with material, when you get 100 mph winds you gonna get roof damage.

no its called a downburst .. one of the weirdest easily observable meteorological phenomenons
it happen in cumulonimbus chouds.
warm air gets suddenly cooled by the water inside the cloud
making it denser resulting of the air literally falling down from the cloud and smashing to the ground
it happened to me once... was driving in on a relatively calm day but with gray sky.. when suddenly the roof of my citroen 2cv was blown away
scary moments :s

i hear a shelf cloud is a warning of a derecho, squall line, gust front, outflow boundry.
