  • So cool. Troll up the chum line. That's where the big sharks lurk.

  • Beast!!

  • Hi Johnny, awesome vids. Trying to pluck the courage up to try for shark off the yak myself. Its looks a serious rush to feel their power so close to the water but can you tell me the average size shark you catch and how big do you reckon the shark was for that sleigh ride. Crazy lookn. REason I ask is where im from they range from 50lb to 150lb anything bigger would be great catch. So if i bumped into a 150lb shark would it tow you like in your video.

Looking forward to some more crazy videos!!

  • @MsTimotay A 150lb Shark specially Mako could give you a very good work out. They can pull your kayak at speed of 3 to 4 knots sustained for up to 15 minutes. You better be prepared to cut your line in split seconds should you feel you loosing control of the situation. I will never use more than 30Lb. main line 40-80Lb leader when fishing on a kayak. At any rate the size of the game fish does not matter to me as long as I am in control.

    Cheers,

    Johnny Ceviche

  • hey bud!

do you use wire when you fish for threshers?

im setting up my rigs and dont wanna over do it

your videos are awesome and i love your comments and words of wisdom they are truley helpfull

  • @lexiloo114 No, I don't use wire leader.I use fluorocarbon mono filament 80-100LB by 12 longis more than enough to handle any sharks caught on kayaks. I have safely landed thresher sharks on a 40LB. leader. Good luck! johnnyceviche

  • I fish for Himalayan Mahseer in India. I enjoyed watching your videos. I'd like to try Kayak fishing on reservoirs and rivers here. Please recommend a great inflatable kayak . Also, I' d like to know what setup you use to throw plugs and artificials, line preferences and spinning/BC rods-reels

    Thanks and Regards

    Harsh

  • @hsrana Harsh thank for watching my videos. I have not use inflatable kayak so I do not have any information about it. Sorry I could not help you with that. As for fishing gear you need to match it to the size of fish you plan in catching. I will break it down the fishing gear in 3 groups of rod and reel combo. Group one 8-12lbs for fish 5-Lbs and below. Group two 12-25lbs rod/reel combo for 5-20lbs fish. Group three 25- 50 Lbs rod reel combo for fish 25lbs-150 lbs.

    Good Luck, johnnyceviche

  • that was so fake it isn't funny

  • @umyeahitsme12 Hi Mate,

I hope you are doing fine and I am very appreciative for your comment. It is my goal to put out the best real life video as recorded by my camera, real life video as recorded by my camera, real life video but somehow, someway I failed to convince your sharp eyes. If you don't mind revealing the mistake I made that caught your attention that in your own word "so fake it isn't funny". so that I may avoid same mistake in the future. All comments are welcome!JohnnyCeviche

  • Try holding the rod up & giving the fish something to wear him out.

Pulling line straight from the reel is much easier than fighting the rod as well.

  • Johnny, where did this take place and when?

  • @MsMichellemo this video was captured in La jolla Ca. I believe about a year ago.Cheers Johnny Ceviche

  • too bad the fish didn't pull you close to shore

  • @micahgee To tell you the truth I didn't want to see that monster up close. I had to change shorts when I got back to my truck. ' Cause I was wet and I'm cold! :) . Tight lines Johnny Ceviche

  • if youre from san diego, where do you fish out of?

  • LOL That was awesome! Got my adrenals goin just watching it!! Ever come across a White pointer?

  • @BradJC70 No Great White encounter for me. Those bad boys do not play around. They mean business.

    Cheers,

  • the one that got away or was it the other way around lol i see your pinoy best friend is a pinoy much love great stuff you have here

  • What a thrilling video Mr Ceviche, one of my favorites ever! Nothing like a big Mako shark towing YOU into oblivion.

  • 1 angry fish didn't like this video

  • @boxant He'll get over it.!

  • the piece of kelp startled me

  • LMAO you have a fucking shark pulling you in the water and you just put ur legs in to slow it down O_O thats stupid but brave

  • New way of surfing

  • SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTT!!!

  • Is your paddle carbon fiber? I've got a bent shaft one for whitewater kayaking

  • awsome! Thanks.

    ctown67 kayakwars.

  • hahahaahahaha....who says they need a motor when you have a 3 jaws on the end of your line and your sitting on a 2 meter kayak :D

  • Just imagine if his paddle fell off while it was dragging him.

  • LOL! I was watching the video where jceviche catches the tiny mako shark and tosses it back.

So someone posts the following remarks after that mako shark video:

" so wtf happends when you catch a 500 or 600 lb mako and not a little one on a kayak???? "

(so i'm sitting there thinking the same thing as i read it)

    LOL, jceviche replys with.........

The answer to your question my friend is caught on video titled eXtreme Kayak Sleigh Ride. Check it out!

    LOL, good video....Lucky tho.

  • its probubly good thing you only use five feet of leader. that fish was probubly bigger than your boat,

  • is that the ocean or the lake?

  • Hey Johnny, ..How far do you think it pulled you??? What do you think it was??? Man that was a ride!!!! I kayak fish a little bit not as much i as i would want to but this was awesome!!! Better luck next time.

  • @kikimaracas I'd say about a mile. I think it's an adult Mako Shark as sightings of Mako sharks is not uncommon in this fishing ground. You just got to pick the right size and not to tangle with the biguns.

  • That was a submarine you caught!

  • fish is pulling you?

  • Comment removed

  • do you use some sort of water proofing for your camera?

  • The camera itself is waterproof it can go under water.

    Cheers,

    johnnyceviche

  • WOW!!! you are the freaking king! i want to paddle out with you so bad. That is so intense. I would probably have been a bit scared. lol

  • I hooked a several hudred pound Mako that towed me toward Japan for an hour in a fog. Since that day I wear a life jacket when I fish. PS I dig this video,

  • Johnny, do you use any lead to get the mac down deep or does it swim there by itself?

  • 1004w12,

Fly lined mackerel no weight. Main line, swivel, 5 ft. fluorocarbon leader and 2/0 gorilla hook by Owner. I use a lively mackerel the bigger the better.

    TL,

    johnnyceviche

  • why knife...to cut the line if you tip?

  • crv26,

Yes, to cut the line in case I tip over is one good scenario.

    TL,

    johnnyceviche

  • how did you mount the camera on the kayak. what a beast

  • dude, you are a crazy man.. the biggest thing i pull up to my kayak was 36in ling. n that thing almost flip my shit... crazy man

  • Thank you. I just got my first kayak malibu x factor. Maybe ill see you out there this summer when im trolling for yellow tail. La Jolla shores right?

  • Hey Johnny What kind of reel is that your using?

  • the Genesis I was using Shimano TLD 20 with 30 lbs test line.

    JC

  • was it a shark?

  • fotograh Yes it was an adult Mako Shark.

  • That's INSANE!!!! The most aggressive shark in the waters, lol. Have you since increased your lb test, so you wont lose the next beast!?!? I mean, what if you hit up a HUGE Tuna, etc. Would HATE to lose out on something like that!!!

  • YEEEEEEEEEEHEEEE!!!

  • I'm so very very jealous! What a fantastic video. One day I hope to get a free ride like that.

  • que es tu primera idioma, espanol?

  • Comanchebrav,

Mis primera idioma es English.Soy Filipino.

  • jc.

Thanks for the info. I have learned so much form you and your videos. I hope you keep the lessons going, just be safe.

    Tight lines. Mark

  • Johnny,

How much drag do you use? What test line? That must be a big fish.

    Thanks Mark

  • dlvmark, drag tension is set at 50% if I am playing with the fish. On this video I set the drag at full tension as I know towards the end that I don't have a chance in stopping this monster.

    JC

  • What do you think it was Johnny?

  • I t's an adult Mako shark. I;ve seen one made an aireal prior to the sleigh ride.

    TL,

    Johnny Ceviche

  • Your clicker is killing me.

  • lol this guys nuts, no way id be cathin sharks in that little kayak hell no

  • I spose thats the disadvantage of using Light tackle. I would have thought 30lb would be perfect for the job. And i hate TLD's. Tiagras are by far the best. I take my hat off though dude. Good fishing

  • Johnny your killing me, what a ride, You got balls man.

  • hi Johnny great video you got there...what set up do you use?thanks and tight lines

  • kayakkoi, I'm guessing you are asking about camera set up or fishing gear set up. For camera set up I'm using Sony DCR-HC96 with an external helmet camera. For fishing rig Shimano TLD-20 and a GFGR 700M Calstar.

    TL,

    JC

  • once again great video Johnny, please post more! i love all your fishing video...thanks!

  • Thanks Johnny, love all your videos, can't wait to get out on my yak real soon!! Tight lines and safe fishing to you!

  • how fast do you think he had you going and for how long?Whats the knife for, incse he takes you out to far? What do you think he was.I love your videos man,you were born with some kind of fish gene the rest of us just dont have, but Im trying.

  • dannymartin66,

Conservatively speaking I was being towed at 1-1/2 to 2 knots for 10 minutes. I suspected Mako or a matured Thresher Shark. The knife is for emergency should I tip over or in case I get lines tangled I have to cut the line quickly.

    TL,

    Johnny Ceviche

  • Hi Johnny, First off, great to see a new video from you... I have enjoyed all your fishing videos that you have posted. Hope to see more added from you soon. Your videos have gotten me through a long and cold winter here in the Northeast. I can't wait to get a line in the water. A question for you: What type of cam are you using to film your video? Be safe out there and have fun!

  • lewbeachbob,

I am using a Sony DCR-HC96 recorder with an attached external Helmet Cam.

    Jc

  • What type of leader were you using? that must have been a very large shark, great ride!!

  • goldwings25

I am using 5 feet of 40LB. Seagar fluorocarbon leader, 30LB main line a swivel and 2/0 Gorilla live bait hook.

    Jc

  • hey buddy sorry to bother you, but what is the rules for the length of leader you should use?

  • crv26,

I don't know any rules for the length of a leader, but I use 5 feet 40 lb. fluorocarbon leader.

    TL,

    jc

  • @jceviche Johnny, i'm a socal guy born and raised. Me and a buddy are just starting to get into fishing saltwater. Any advice on websites that have a pretty good demonstration of knots and rigs? all I know is a simple freshwater trout knot. Thanks, Adam; Huntington beach

  • @atompkins99 @atompkins99 Here is a link that shows how to do knots step by step; look for (animatedknots)

There are two knots that I use in most application. The Palomar and Perfection knots.

    TL,

    johnnyceviche

  • Awesome as always Johnny. I can't wait for the next video now that it's warming up. Keep it up. I'd love to fish with you one day.

  • JC! dang, that looked amazing!

any idea what it was? im thinking maybe a thresher... was this recent?

  • Boonicat71, I did not get to see the beast as it stayed just below the surface. However a big Mako or Thresher Shark are both suspect..

    JC

  • Be safe brother. Tight Lines.

  • Wow.. hope to get a hookup like that this season.

Great to see another video from you. Can't wait to see more. Aloha.

  • Donboddahme,

You being in the Island should be not a problem! Just remember BIG bait attracts Big Fish as seen in the video. Be safe & have that knife handy in case you need to cut the line.

    Aloha/Mahalo,

    Johnny Ceviche

  • Jonny, I just got into this whole Kayak thing...Got a Tarpon 140. My buddy has been doing it for a few years. So far I have only caught some trought and bass in the lake. Just went sturgeon fishing a few days ago. Dude, I am hooked bad. I love this sport. Thanks for the videos. Inspireing... Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Justman1970, All I can say is spend time in the water, take or research kayak safety training before doing any extreme kayak fishing. Be safe.

    JC

  • This is what kayak fishing is all about. I just got into it last year. I own a OK and a Wilderness Systems...i fish of Chicago so I probably won't experience any sleigh ride like that. Awesome! How far out did he pull you?

  • jonramos4, I was towed for half mile but it sure felt like I was taken out to the open sea for 2 miles and a skid mark! LOL.

    TL, Johnny Ceviche

  • EXCELLENT !!! best sleigh ride ever!! That was great!!

  • snaxs2000

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate all feedbacks. Yeah! sleigh ride is great but one has to recognized there are many things that could go wrong. Thus the knife at hand in case I have to cut the line. To tell you the truth my heart was skipping beats at times.

    TL, Johnny Ceviche

  • Awesome sleighride, Ceviche!
