I remember reading about this in a magazine way back. I didn't know it had never seen the light of day and just happened to be looking for info on it on a whim.
Nope. No further information on the game has been found out ever since it was scrubbed off the final Genesis release schedule and quietly canceled in late 1996. Not even from those who worked on it (whereeve they are). I wonder if anyone owns a ROM of this, of its ever been found..........
this game was supposed to have Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, Psylocke, Dazzler, and Shadowcat as playable characters... very lame that it was cancelled.
They won't. Both games were cancelled well over 10 years ago, and there's no interest whatsoever in finishing or releasing them. Nobody even knows if an incomplete version of "X-Women" exists out there.
I remember reading about this around '95 or '96 in some game magazine, and being excited about playing as Storm, Rogue, and Jean (all great characters); an interesting feminist type of game, what with the male X-heroes being debilitated by the Sinister virus...ah well, I would have bought it!
When I first heard about this game back in the day, I was sooo looking forward to it. I particularly wanted to play as Jean because she's my favorite X-Woman. Mmmmmm...Jean.
It should've been released. There was no excuse on why it was cancelled. I betcha female X-Men fans were really pissed when they found out about this.
By 1995, support for the Sega Genesis, both first-party and third-party, was dwindling steadily by the months as focus shifted to Sega's then-new system, the Saturn. Then, in the fall of 1995, Sega of Japan discontinued all of Sega's systems except for the Saturn, which dealt even more of a death blow to the Genesis which limped on with barely any new games for the next two years or so.
"X-Women" was amongst those handful of late-gen Genesis games canceled, due to dying support for Genesis.
The Genesis failed (Sega period) because they were trying to expand the lifespan of the Genesis with these horrible add-ons (the crappy Sega CD and the horendous Sega 32X) of which ruined the Sega Genesis games and systems because of the soo many adapters and other add-ons (on Genesis) being plugged that looked dangerously unpresentable (wires all around like a messy spiderweb). Sega failed because of their marketing (too quick to release new systems with bad game designs).
Actually it was 1996 but the Genesis had several new games that came out in 1997 such Prime Time Football and the Lost World. So IDK how SoJ was doin SoA in regards to puttin the Genesis on the choppin block.
I think the problem was that an X-Women game simply wasn't marketable at the time. I'm surprised SEGA went as far as they did with the development. I'm pretty sure I would have bought the game, but I can't speak for the other people that represent the high number of purchases needed for this game to make a profit.
Then they should have made it for Saturn. I'm not mad at you, SuperAdventures, but Sega could still have made this. Maybe a Virtual Console release? That would reignite the energy in my Wii.
No problem. But I think that Sega had lost the license to make "X-Men" games after the cancellation of this game. Or at least they didn't ever attempt again.
Well SEGA has the Marvel license again ... or at least they did when they made the latest Iron Man and Incredible Hulk games. I guess Activision still holds the X-Men license.
Most likely. Sega was in all kind of turmoil during the time period in which this game was being developed (and cancelled), and their U.S division was hit pretty badly. I don't think they even had the studios or manpower to develop a U.S based game (with the exception of their sports titles) by that point (the defunct "Sega Technical Institute" collapsed after the cancellation of "Sonic X-Treme"). And the Saturn was floundering month by month....ugh, what a bad period.
In other words, the timing was the most to blame?
Unless the development data for this game has been lost or deleted, I think it would be a good idea to revise this title. Otherwise someone should make a new X-Women video game for multiple platforms.
I still can't beleiev they cancelled it
it would be a great game
