lol Yeah, I always thought at least trout is a fish..lol
Good to know someone else called it that. My mom corrected me after she saw the video.lol All those years when I would say trout, she never paid any attention to it, until she saw it in the film.
Same thing happened to me. I always fished with my Uncle Francis. He did not give way to tugs. One time we were running our lines, a tug comes round the bend with 4 barges and there we sat just about 2/3's out in the river. We had 4 lines out and it was hot. Uncle Francis said "We aint moving, I got the right of way" That tug blew his horn and got bigger and bigger, but Uncle Francis stood his ground. We could see the color of the capt's eyes. The tug cut his engines and drifted by us!
Never made to Wheeler but understand it has some nice cats in it. Jackson, Al is about 70 miles north of Mobile, Alabama on US43. We fished about 2 miles upstream from where US 43 crossed the river. For years that particular bridge was a narrow two lane draw bridge. One night a tug with barges rammed the bridge, not it out of action for 6 months. Added another 2 hour trip to Mobile which usualy took about an hour......
I remember one day we had 5 lines tied togather and here comes a tug boat pushing the barges and I kelp telling Bill to cut the line but he just keeps on pulling ,said he had the right of way. I told him he might thought he did ,but that barge was bigger and he was the boss lol.......He finially did cut it ...lol It was hard work but we had fun too
One more final comment on this video. When the month of May came around, we would wait for the "Mayflies" to hatch. That's when the catfish would become easier to catch. The mayflies would fall into the river waters by the thousands and float downstream eventually sinking down towards the bottom. That's when you could pull out your best bait and have a field day, as many as you could haul in. Another fun memory.
Thanks for the comments...We did the same thing ,too..By the way you mention fishing Tombigee River in Ala. Did you ever fish at Wheeler? That's where we did our lines at , Fisherman's Resort.Spent several years there...It was fun to catch those big cats.I 've got an album full of the really big ones....,but it was alot of hard work.....I still have lots of friends down there,so I visit and it brings back good memories....
I heard a comment about the lady in this video that I haven't thought about in a long time and that is having a good man, or woman, at the steering wheel. It is so important that this person knows exactly what the current is doing, as it makes the job of running and setting the lines so much easier. Thanks for the memories.
@rmachayes Thanks so much for all your comments. I have forwarded them to my mom. I know she will appreciate them, since she is the lady in the video. She and my dad spent a lot of time on the river trout lining. This video helps keep his memory and spirit alive in our hearts.
We never tried meal worms are grasshoppers. We used live minnows, cut shad, catalpa worms when we could get them, stink baits and one time ivory soap. We read an article in an outdoor magazine about a man using ivory soap for catfish bait. We set out a few drop lines baited with ivory soap and we did catch one catfish. How about that??
@rmachayes Yeah, they tired the soap and the catalpa worms too, but I think he had better luck with the meal worms and grasshoppers. He use to pay his grandkids to catch the grasshoppers. (cheap labor..lol) but not really, he would actually overpay them.
Man, does this bring back beautiful memories. Being raised on the Tombigbee River near Jackson, Al I can relate to all this. You are so right, LOTS of work. But ain't it worth it when the fish are running? Nothing, I mean nothing, tastes as good as when it is cooked on the river. We had a fish camp, and used gas for cooking, had a flushing toilet filled with a tank of rain water. What fun! If you are an outdoorsman you aint lived till you have run trot lines, jugs, and drop lines.
Great video I enjoyed it. You can tell from how the video looks and the motor cowling/truck/etc that the video was done a while ago. Very Very Cool! I gave 5 stars
lol..I know..I called it trout lining as a kid. At least trout was a fish. What's up with trot anyway? Wonder who started calling it trot lining and why? Strange to me. Looks like it would be called catfish lining or something. Anyway, You might have noticed that I labeled the video "trot lining" and only used "trout" in the actual movie...ps...it's trot lining..not trot lineing..lol..I know...a typo. Thanks for viewing the video. My dad who is in the movie died over 8yrs ago and loved fishing.
That's a really cool video. I've had a hard time finding videos on youtube that show trotlining, and this video brings back memories of my own childhood. It's also a nice memorial for your father.
What a great video. That's what life is all about! Good times with people you love. Brings a tear to my eye.
