I get 243MB/s Write and 627MB/s Read with "only" 3 Intel SSD's in my Mac Pro. Overall 3 is faster than 4. I read some reviews, and you can see the same results online. Don't ask me why!
I have a 2010 Mac Pro, 4 core. I "only" have 2 x 160GB X-25M's. I have to disagree with khunbon. Yes you can insert the SSD into the slot, and it will dangle there. However, I completely disagree that it is secure. They could definitely come out if a dog ran into your tower or something. I bought two of the MaxUpgrades sleds. They are $50 each, but that is a drop in the bucket compared to the price of a new mac pro + SSD array. Just do it right.
@Aslapacrosstheface when dealing with something as expensive as a Mac Pro, I think of it in relative costs. $150 for 3 SSD sleds is nothing compared to $1000 for 3 drives, or $2500 for the computer itself.
I originally used boxing tape, and a piece of wood as my mounting piece. It actually worked fine, but when you look at a professional machine it just seem right. Its like owning a Ferrari and putting on hub caps! It will work, but...
@Aslapacrosstheface I beheld. That would not even fit into the mac case, let alone line up in the exact manner necessary. I can tell you haven't seen the insides of a Mac Pro. They have sleds that have to be exactly lined up. Intel SSD drives come with a FREE 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor, but the problem is that they dont line up exactly. And close doesn't count.
@HavoCnMe 15 idiots give this idiot's comment a thumbs up. You can, and always have been able to, right click on a Mac. (The biggest selling point of a Windoze machine is the ability to right click- Ha!)
wow, you saved so much cash by scoring an old television out of the dumpster, that you could buy 4 ssds :-) :-) nice setup man, just joking. but seriously... you need a 30" cinema badly :-) (I'm waiting for them to update the old beast... hurry up apple, I need 30" action asap)
Well the reason the Intels are normally recommended for OSX is because they manage to get around the lack of Trim support due to some tech they put into their controllers to write the date in a certain way. They do not suffer from the same write amplification issues that the other drives do. That is why they make sense for OSX.
I've thought about doing a raid setup until I heard that garbage collection (TRIM) doesn't work on a raided setup. Was this a concern you had khunbon?
Yes please answer regarding this.. I am also concerned about this issue. Can you let me know how much it costs also to get a raid card for these ssds?
Well I dont want to pay 800 for a raid card.. so can you name me the best one around 300 dollars? And whats the difference between a "ok" one and a "awesome" one.. they still do the sam job right?
Hi, trim doesn't support in OSX so from time to time you need to run the maintenance program to bring up the performance.
I only use the software raid from apple since the most important factor to me is write speed so maximum write speed for my set up is 400 MB/s for both software and hardware raid. Of course hardware raid will give you better read performance out of intel SSD.
I just wanted to add that someone corrected me and told me that garbage collection and TRIM are different. Garbage collection is possible on RAID drives but requires you to run the program. TRIM however is not and I think that TRIM runs at the hardware/firmware level for cleaning the drives.
I need SSD with capacity more than 500 GB so it is no waste. There is no single SSD drive that has capacity more than 256 GB so if you combine 4 units of intel G2 SSD is still cheaper than many other SSD choices. I also upgraded my G2 to a new firmware and now SSD's write speed is 400 MB/s. you can not get this write speed from any single SSD.
How long have you had this setup for? I just bought an intel x25e and i think your setup is better.. but i hear there's a TRIM support problem for raided intel x25 m cards? Also what is the raid controller card u bought?
@khunbon the larger the SSD the less reliable and more likely they are to fail. Its inherit with the technology and has no foreseeable work around.. If you want the speed of SSD with the side of HDD your gonna have to wait till the next format of saving is invented cause SSD is not for you.
NIce. I think you would see an increase with a raid controller. But it probably wouldn't be noticeable. Try doing some windows 7 boots and tests on the same system.
so you got 4 effin' SSD's, and you wasted them on a MAC to only get 548 mb/s read and 273.2 write? Hahahahah, my single Crucial M4 SSD can do better.

Intel's actual specs on the 160gb version are 270 read 100 write.
With 4 drives you should get about 1GB/s reads and 300-350MB/s writes. You've lost about half of your performance.
And even at 500, your OS should load a lot faster than it did in this video.
Those macs... they're just too expensive to raid properly :P

Hi, awesome setup! Just wondering what adaptors you used to get the 2.5' drives working with drive sleds in the Mac Pro.
natony 1 year ago
@natony
Hi, SSD is so light that you can just plug it into SATA sockets inside Macpro i do not use any adapter, just plug it inside and it is quite secured.
Actually intel provides the converter from 2.5 -> 3.5 but it does not work for Macpro.
Hope this helps!
